Mega Man 3 - Ridley X Hack Review by: tornadocam - 8.9/10

Mega Man 3 Ridley X Hack I
Mega Man is a popular video game icon. In fact he is often ranked up there with Mario. The classic Mega Man franchise made its debut in 1987. But it was Mega Man 2 and 3 that put the series on the map and made Mega Man a popular Icon. Mega Man 3 was so successful that it has been remade itself a few times by Capcom. But they are a lot of hacks of the original Mega Man 3 game. Mega Man 3 Ridley X hack I also sometimes simply called Mega Man Ridley Hack is a hack of the original MM3. So how does it compare to the original.

Plot: 9

The story is the same as Mega Man 3. Not one thing was changed which is good because a lot of times even in hacks the plot gets changed. Basically Dr. Wily has seemed to have turned good (really now) and has joined with Dr. Light. Together they build a peace keeping robot named Gamma. But to power Gamma they need 8 crystals guarded by 8 new robot masters. The robot masters are out of control and running wild. Mega Man is given orders to head out with his new sidekick Rush the dog and recover the crystals. Mega Man must also head out and find out who is controlling these robots and who really is in charge. Mega Man soon discovers that these robot masters have set all kinds of traps?

I really liked Mega Man 3's plot. There is suspense and mystery going on in the plot which shows creativity. Who is really controlling the robots. You do not find out until later in the game who is controlling them. Also it seemed like the plot was trying to offer something new to the series and it shows. Since Ridley's hack did not change a thing. I have to give the plot a very solid 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 8

For this to be a hack the graphics are amazing. The color of the stages go very well with the background. How the stages have been changed was nicely done. The sprites are also neatly done.  The only thing with the graphics and it is minor is there is a few times in the game were lags appear. I noticed when going to a new section in a stage it seemed like there was a lag. It is not all the time and very minor.

The controls are smooth just like the original game. Not one time did I feel like I was fighting against the controls as in some other hacks I have played. The controls are not sluggish and are just right. I can only think of one other hack that had smooth controls and that was Mega Man X3 Zero Hack. That game was smooth all around. So I give the graphics and controls a very solid 8 out of 10.

Sound: 10

Mega Man 3 had some very good music and sounds to it. So how does this hack compare? To be honest the sound was not changed in this hack. The stage themes are still the same as they were in the original game.  Mega Man 3 was infamous for not just its game play but for its music. Sometimes you just want to pause a stage and listen to the music yeah its that good. Also the sounds the enemies make was left untouched. Mega Man's buster has the same sound letting you know your shots are doing damage. On the other hand the enemies shots have their original sounds letting you know they mean business. Thus, I give the sound a perfect 10 out of 10.

Replay Value: 8

This game is fun just like the original game was. For this to be a hack its one that you want to play over and over again. If you want to play a different version of Mega Man 3 but yet has the same sound and smoothness then look no farther. I really enjoyed playing this game and so far it is one of the hacks I keep going back too. Whoever, made this game I believe was trying to keep the feel as the original game and it shows. I will certainly play this game again. So, at the end of the day I give Ridley Mega Man 3 hack 1 a solid replay value of 8 out of 10.

Depth: 9

Mega Man 3 had a lot of depth to it. In the original game the stages were long, had secrets and had ? blocks that usually held an item. In this hack the stages have been extended making them extra long. Also, the makers of this game did include secrets so it requires you to search every area of a stage (it should be noted you can't revisit a stage) so investigating takes a lot of time. The ? do appear in this hack but they have been made more isolated. In the original game they were numerous but in this game a stage might have just 1 or 2 question blocks. Just like Mega Man 3 this hack is also long. This is a game you will not be able to beat in less than 2 hours. As after you defeat the robot masters more stages open up. After you defeat the unlocked stages then you have more stages. Thus, I give the depth a very good 9 out of 10. Mega Man games are infamous for their depth and this one is no exception.

Difficulty: 9

Mega Man games are known for their difficulty and this game despite being a hack is difficult. I would say its more difficult then the original game for several reasons. First of all, the layouts have been changed in this game. The new layouts have lots of tricky jumps and pits in them. So you will have to get creative in your jumps to clear the pits. Another thing is the layout makes fighting enemies difficult. To hit some of the enemies you will have to get creative in hitting them on the new layout. This is very difficulty to do which adds more to the difficulty. The original game had some tricky layouts but it was mostly flat with a few pits. Second, is enemies really gang up on you in this game. Sometimes an enemy will drop from the ceiling or sky out of nowhere. This can get you hit or knocked into the pit as they seem to drop while your trying to make a tricky jump. Moreover, enemies will gang up on you from behind and attack you in any direction. A lot of times you can lose health quickly before going to the next section of the game. So yeah, you can get overran in this game. Third, energy tanks have been toned down in this game. In the original game energy tanks were numerous and just about every stage had multiple ones. In this hack energy tanks are isolated and usually there is only 1. Also the makers of this game put the energy tanks in nearly impossible areas to reach. Lots of times they require extra effort and creativity to get too. Fourth, you have to go a long way to reach the checkpoint in the game. In the original game there were usually two checkpoints per stage. But not in this game. You can feel like you have covered a lot of ground, get killed and find yourself starting all the way at the beginning. That happened to me several times. In some of the stages I was going good and I thought was deep into a stage only to get killed. I thought oh well no big deal since I've reached the checkpoint. Wrong, I had to go back to the very beginning. This shows you how long the stages are and how difficult this game can be.

However, at times it seems like the game does try to help you out a little bit. The special weapons gotten from bosses do a lot of damage on enemies. So if you find yourself surrounded and you have a special weapon you can use it sometimes to get out of a jam. For high jumps they gave you the Rush Coil to start the game with so that can help you get an item that is beyond reach. Also sometimes the enemies are generous about dropping an extra life.

As difficult as this game was. I really enjoyed the type of difficulty in this game. This is one of those games that is difficult for the right reasons. In other hacks I played sometimes it seems the game was difficult due to control or graphical issues. Not so much in this game. This is just a difficult game that requires creativity, reflexes and a little bit of luck to master. I really like games that offer you a challenge. For me it adds to the replay value. Thus, I give the difficulty a solid 9 out of 10.

Overall Rating: 8.9

Ridley hack of Mega Man 3 (first version) was very nicely done. The game does not have a lot flaws as some of the other hacks do. I have been playing Mega Man 3 hacks and this one is going to be hard to top. It is that good of a game. I remember when I got Mega Man 3 when it came out and I played that game a lot. So I was happy to see hacks of the original game being made. So I figured I would try this one and I was not let down. But, before I start with the positives this game did have a few minor flaws.

First of all, they are lags when going to another section of the stages. These lags are very minor and do not last that long. But if your making a jump to the next section be sure to give yourself extra room or a boost to jump. Because, the lags can slow you down and mess your jump or even dodging up. Its not a lot to make a difference but it can get you into trouble. The good news is there is not a lot of lags in this game.

Second, I didn't really mention it but I think the makers of this game tried to make the layouts similar to future mega man games. Normally this would not be an issue but I think that is what causes a few of the lags in this game. Also, some gamers might be turned off by the really long stages and only one checkpoint in the game. This would more likely turn off beginners then veteran gamers like me. Me personally, I kind of like it as it makes the game more difficult. But I could see beginners getting a little frustrated.

Now for the positives. This game had very good controls. So far the controls have been the smoothest I have played for a hack game. The only game I can think of that had more smooth controls was Mega Man X3 Zero hack (also known as the Zero project). I really liked how the backgrounds and colors were done in this game.

In addition, the sound in this game was left unchanged which makes this a very good hack. As I stated several times Mega Man 3 had some really good sounds to it. So I was glad the makers of this hack did not change a thing. I also think the difficulty is nicely done. Yeah it is frustrating at times and difficult. But that is what makes a game great in my opinion. I like games that require a challenge it adds to their replay value. The only time in my opinion is when difficult is bad is when it is for the wrong reasons such as control, graphical and glitches. Games that are difficult for the wrong reasons I do not enjoy playing that much. But this game is difficult for the right reasons as I mentioned in the difficult section. I also like how the makers of this game gave me the impression they were trying to make this a different game. What I mean is they took Mega Man 3 changed things around, but while keeping the positives. Basically, it seemed like they were trying to make a new version of Mega Man 3 or even a new game out of the original game. If that was their intentions then they passed as this game is good that you can easily forget your playing a hack.

Overall, I will have to give the game a very good score of 8.9. This game is almost as good as the original game. The lags are really the only flaw in this game and to some people that will not matter that much. Would I recommend this game. Yes this game despite its lags has what a good game should have in it: very good graphics, controls, sound, replay value, depth and difficulty. While the game is not the most brutal in difficulty it is a hard game. So if you wanting to introduce somebody to Mega Man. I would recommend that you let them play the original game first before playing this one. Otherwise, they might could get frustrated. On the other hand, this is a great game and a great hack. I highly recommend it.
