Space Invaders '95: The Attack Of Lunar Loonies (Ver 2.5O 1995-06-14) Review by: AwesomeTrinket - 6.9/10

Review: Arcade Game - Space Invaders '95: Attack of the Lunar Loonies (Pew, Pew, Pew!)

Hey, it's the great AwesomeTrinket here! About a month ago, I went on a vacation to Florida. During that vacation, I wrote a review about this game. I just now found it on Microsoft Word and decided to post it here. Everything else, other than this paragraph, has not been edited.

It’s been a while since I played this game, but I still remember it like I finished the last boss just now. I figured that I’d do a review of this game with cute graphics, lovely music, and fun bosses!

Space Invaders was created by Taito, which was probably one of their first games and went on to create more and more games for the arcade, which includes Puzzle Bobble, and, actually, this game, Space Invaders ’95: Attack of the Lunar Loonies. Keep in mind that not only is this game a comparison to other arcade games out there, it’s a comparison to the game it’s a spinoff of, which is – of course – the original Space Invaders.

P.S. to my hotel's internet connection: Stop crashing, you're interrupting this awesome MIDI piano version of Megalovania.

Graphics – 10

The graphics for this game is a massive jump from the original Space Invaders that was released in 1978. Hard to believe that it’s been that long since the old time classic was released! The original was just a bunch of black-and-white blocks. It kind of takes a lot of imagination to make it all bright and colorful. This version of the game takes your imagination and puts it into the game. The colors are bright and cheerful, like what little kids playing Space Invaders would imagine.

The background is also more creative than the original. The new background has planets, oceans, beaches, a world that’s made of food, and even more! It’s a big improvement from just a black background.Another thing that I should mention: You have more characters that you can play as! You can play as a male, a female, a dog, or a weird blue alien thing if you’re playing as Player 1. As Player 2, you basically have a slightly modified selection of the same characters that you can play as when you’re Player 1. Not really much to say here, other than the new graphics are a fresh change from the original game.

Sound – 7.5

Compared to classic games like Mortal Kombat and SegaSonic the Hedgehog, I’d give this game maybe a 5. However, compared to the original Space Invaders, Space Invaders ‘95 easily earns a 10. Averaged, this game is worth a 7.5 for sound.

This game had sound effects and lots of varied music! There aren’t actually that many sound effects. The only ones that I can think of right now are the bullet sounds, the aliens walking, and their cries of defeat when a bullet hits them. The music, on the other hand, is actually a different matter. The music, like Penguin Brothers, varies for each of the worlds. Also like Penguin Brothers, the boss theme is the same, with the exception of the final boss.

Stage One has a theme that starts off retro, like the original Space Invaders, but then it becomes original for its own game. It then goes on to create great soundtracks. The boss theme is the same for all stages except the final boss, but it’s actually even better than Penguin Brothers’ boss theme!

The music isn’t Undertale quality (Death By Glamour = Hard to play on the piano, but amazing nonetheless) but I wouldn’t mind listening to it for an hour or two before turning it off.

Addictiveness – 6

It’s not as addictive as other games like Street Fighter or Daisu Kiss. The addictiveness actually depends on your expectations. It’s quite fun to play if you’re just looking for a game to pass the time. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a game that you want to play nonstop, resetting the game to play it over and over again, I’d recommend that you look for other games like Ghost in the Shell or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time.

Story – 5

From what I’ve gathered, there’s not much of a story. The story can be summed up in just two paragraphs at most:

Some aliens have invaded our galaxy and are intent are keeping it for themselves. They’ve taken over all of our planets, including a few that we didn’t know about, and sent four of their more important aliens to guard the unknown planets and destroy anyone that tried to get rid of them.

Only a select few from the planets in all of our planets (Even the ones we thought didn’t have any life on them) have been chosen to fight off the aliens and defeat their ruler so that the aliens go back to where they came from, because we’re all quite fond of our current galaxy and don’t want to move to a different one.

Depth – 7

This game actually has a bit to do. You can shoot aliens and whatnot, you’d expect that, but what’s new is that you have 5 bosses to fight, and each world has a bonus round, where you can shoot as many aliens as you can that don’t attack. The aliens you shoot in the bonus rounds add up to the amount of points that you have. It’s also a way of signaling that you’re close to the boss round. After you finish the bonus round, you will fight the boss.

As I mentioned before, there are five bosses: Boss one, which is an alien in a combat oriented UFO that’s weakness is its tongue which is constantly sticks out. Boss two is actually sort of three minibosses put together: A fish, an octopus, and a battered shrimp tail that’s in a flying ship. Boss three, known as My Home Daddy’s Girl, is an anthropomorphic alien/lobster; who has her own hermit crab shell, and is also the most human looking out of the five bosses.

I won’t mention boss four and five, mainly because I don’t remember them and partly because I want to leave the last two as a surprise to whoever reads this review and plays the game.

Difficulty – 6

Space Invaders ’95 is easy, not counting the bosses. If you can time your dodges right, you can avoid all of the normal aliens’ attacks. However, you’ll have to watch out for the bosses. Unless you have extremely fast reflexes, you’ll end up getting hit by some attacks that can be described only as near unavoidable. The boss that is by far the most annoying because of this is boss three, or My Home Daddy’s Girl. She can summon in a shield of crabs, which spin and also throw little bullets at you.

You’ll have to dodge the bullets that the crabs throw while shooting at the crabs so that you can land a hit on My Home Daddy’s Girl. The worst thing about this is that she can do this all the time! Sometimes you’ll get rid of her previous shield only to realize she summoned it in again!

Overall – 6.9

Play this game if you’d like to pass the time, it’s a fun game. It’s a nice remake of its 1978 parent. This game is also one of the more obscure games out there, so I’d also recommend playing it if you’re one of those people who look for hidden games.
