Sonic 2 Dimps Edition Game Description

This hack attempts to mimic what Sonic 2 may have been like if it were created by Dimps. This means incorporating many features found in Dimps games such as random speed boosters. This does not include features common in most modern Sonic titles with the exception of a homing attack.

==Features==
- Freshly programmed speed boosters which will be in every level (except Sky Chase Zone since the level is played on top of the Tornado plane).
- Homing Attack which can be abused just like Sonic 4 forces you to.
- Uncurling after hitting a badnik or spring.
- The Sonic 4 version of the spikeless Bubbles badnik, available in Metropolis Zone Act 3 in this release in an area where you will be forced to rebound off them or die.
- Sonic only gameplay (The removal of Tails as a playable character was actually because Tails' VRAM space is used for the dash pads)
- A botched up soundtrack, much like Jun Senoue's soundtrack in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
- Boss theme replaced with a port of the Sonic 3D unused track which is being used as a boss theme for Sonic 4.
- A few physics tweaks to dumb down the game.
- Title screen menu removed (no point for 2P mode and the options menu).
- Misplaced sound effects for a few things.

Sonic 2 Dimps Edition Review by: Mohammedroxx3 - 9.3/10

Dumbed Down a bit = Fun!
Well, hey guys. So I'm now back with another review. (To continue on with the Sonic marathon review for this month). So, now, we are gonna go more into some sonic hacks that were mostly modified to be more "fun", perhaps. So, "Sonic 2 Dimps Edition" was pretty much the first game I noticed that was mostly modified to be more fun than original, but also much easier than original. Now, let us go ahead and dive right to the review!

Intro: Dumbed Down? Dimps Edition?

So, out of all the things I can come up with for an interesting question about this Sonic hack, there were actually 2 questions that may come up in mind. Well, the first one is probably something related to the title of my review. How is this Sonic 2 hack, "Dumbed down a bit"? Well, to answer that question, there were several modifications from the original Sonic 2 game which basically made the gameplay a lot easier than normal, however, I must say, it also made things more fun. Also, those modifications made this Sonic 2 hack similar to Sonic the Hedgehog 4's gameplay, a somewhat modern Sonic game, in many ways, which I will explain shortly for the gameplay section of my review. So, to basically sum that up, it's "Dumbed down a bit" since the gameplay was modified and made a bit more easier than original, and it "= Fun!" because the gameplay was also made to be a bit more fun than hard. Now, as for the second question, Which is, "Dimps Edition?" I honestly have NO idea how/what that title actually came from. Sorry to burst your bubbles (if I did). Though, I must say, one of the main reason this game caught my attention to play it and review it is because the title of this game is definitely interesting. I'm not really sure if the "Dimps Edition" thing in that title of this game actually has something to do with the developer of the game or if it actually has something related to it. So, I'd rather not say anything false, but still, interesting title for a Sonic hack indeed! Now, let us dive in more to the review!

Gameplay: 9

Well, one word to actually describe the gameplay is, "Fun!". Now, let me explain why it is "Fun!". So, firstly, we got some awesome special abilities here, or really, only one awesome special ability here. Well, let me say 2 things and maybe you can guess it correctly. The first word is.... "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" And the second word is.... "Abusive" Well, come on, if you played Sonic the Hedgehog 4 before, then this should be a fairly easy guess. And.... the correct answer is.... The Homing Attack! Definitely one awesome ability. And, if you actually don't know why this is an "Abusive" ability, it is because it is way too awesome and you can do it as much as you desire at any time! You can literally keep jumping and keep doing it to keep moving faster and faster as you run and you can keep doing it to kill several badniks or hit several monitors right after each other! Killing badniks or getting monitors with this move is very easy and yet very fun! Well, it's almost like cheating. Whats even more "Abusive" and "Cheating" about this move is that it even works on bosses. However, you will bounce off the boss very hard after you damage it if you do it, so be careful not to do it in an hazardous area before you bounce off and fall to your demise. I think the homing attack also works on most trampolines. As you can now see, this is why the game was easier and "Dumbed down a bit" but yet even more "Fun!" than original. This also shows why this was very similar to Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in many ways. Which, I must say, is very impressive for an old Sonic game for an old system, the sega genesis.

Now, the next thing to point out that also makes this Sonic hack even more easier and fun is..... Lots of speed boosts virtually everywhere. Those speed boosts literally does all the fast running/rolling for you but it is fun to be able to move fast easily, though, others can possibly find it boring. Those speed boosts are pretty much similar to the speed boost in chemical plant zone from the original Sonic 2, but it's boost is slightly slower so it can be more controllable, and looks visually different. (Which is what I'm supposed to talk about in the graphics section of my review.) Literally, you'll see that speed boost every second you run, sometimes even less than a second or at most, 1-3 seconds, literally. You might not even see them at all because you are just moving way too fast to even notice. XD There are even speed boosts in steep ramps which makes it easier for you to go up the ramp, but yet fun since you will blast off high in the air. Also, one last thing to mention about the homing attack is that those Sonic 3 looking badniks that are spikeless and looks like blue bubbles (which is also in Sonic 4), is sometimes floating in the air right after each other in areas with literally no ground. So, you are forced to do that homing attack on each one of them or you'll die. Very fun, easy (but annoying if you end up forgetting to do the homing attack), and almost exactly like Sonic 4. As for the physics, they are mostly similar to the original Sonic 2, however, they do seem slightly modified for the homing attack and speed boosts, but it is unnoticeable if you don't do the homing attack or if you don't go on the speed boosts. That is about it for the gameplay portion in my review. It may be a bit large than normal since there was quite a lot to talk about here.

Graphics: 8

I'm seriously hoping that the graphics section doesn't end up being small in my review since there isn't much to talk about. Anyways, basically nearly everything was not modified from the original. The Sonic sprites are the same, the zones and badniks looks exactly the same... etc. But, to talk about it, it is something retro gamers would want to see while they play their favorite game. The graphics are bright, very colorful, somewhat contrasting, fairly vivid, and of decent quality. It is not fuzzy, colorless, plain, incomplete, or hideous. It's really good quality for a sega genesis, indeed. Now, the one and only modified thing I noticed for the graphics is the small speed boosts that are everywhere throughout all/most of the zones. They do look pretty similar to chemical plant zone, but they are shorter, have only one row of wheels instead of 2 rows, and no arrows like the original. But I guess, it is best if the speed boosts look like that because having the chemical plant zone speed boosts everywhere in all the zones wouldn't be so fitting. Other than that, not much left to talk about.

Sound: 9

Now, there are some things that appears to be modified here. Well, one thing to mention is that the sound effects do not appear to be modified, as for the background musics, I think all of them were somewhat modified. The background music is more, "Jazzy" (kind of) but still similar to the original Sonic 2 background music. Pretty hard to describe, somewhat jazzy, a bit jumpy and adventurous. Kind of motivating you to play the game. I'll have to admit that it was modified pretty well. It's definitely something that retro gamers would want to hear while playing a hack of their favorite game of all time. Despite the modifications, it still fits the default zones pretty well. Also, it's a bit similar to Sonic 4 in a way. The way it is jumpy and adventurous is like Sonic 4's background musics. As for the sound effects, they are original. To sum it up, it is fitting, catchy, and decent quality for a sega genesis. This applies to both the sound effects and modified background musics for all zones.

Addictiveness: 10

Well well well, here comes (probably) one of the best things about this Sonic 2 hack. It is extremely addictive alright! Why? Let me explain the main 2 things that makes this game addicting. Firstly, as I mention and explained before, this Sonic 2 hack is extremely fun thanks to the homing attack and speed boosts, which will help make this game addicting. The second thing, is that the game is not so hard, it is pretty easy for all/most of the zones thanks to the homing attack and speed boosts. Thus, making you less tired of this game from being too hard. It's easy in a fun way, thus, making it addicting! Those are the 2 elements that this Sonic 2 hack greatly contains which makes this Sonic 2 hack, addicting! You just want to continuously play around and try out that awesome homing attack and complete this game with those awesome and fun things! This is probably one of the few Sonic hacks that are very addicting to me, probably (or possibly) even more addicting than original. There isn't really much left to talk about.

Story: 6

Awww.... Here comes the boring part for this game, once again. Well, if you really want me to say the *sarcasm* extremely long, complex (not simple at all) and very interesting story *end of sarcasm*, this is what it is: "Dr. Eggman has evil plans!!! Will Sonic the Hedgehog be able to stop him before it's too late? Help Sonic the Hedgehog to stop Dr. Eggman and foil his evil plans!" Yep, it's that same, old, very simply, and very overused story in most Sonic games again. I'm not really sure if that "Dimps Edition" in the title of this Sonic 2 hack actually has anything to do with the story of this game. Other than that, there isn't really much to talk about here.

Depth 9:

Well, this game does indeed offer some really cool things. The first thing that you'll see that this game offers, is the level select screen and it comes right when you start the game! Very cool and awesome. The 2nd thing that it offers is, obviously, all the original Sonic 2 zones that were modified with the new speed boosts and stuff. The 3rd thing it offers is the awesome special abilities, which is the spin-dash (do it by simply standing in the ground, hold down, and tap the jump button) and the homing attack (do it by simply pressing the jump button while you are on the air). Now, 2 things that this Sonic 2 hack doesn't offer from the original is, the 2 player vs., options menu in title screen, and Tails... Yea, somewhat a bummer but most people usually don't play 2 player vs. or even use the options menu, so it's basically unnecessary to have. As for Tails, it kind of sucks for Sonic to be alone in the whole long journey without his friend, but, Tails needed to be removed because the Sram thing (or whatever it's called) is needed for the homing attack and speed boosts. But, oh well... Thats is basically it for the depth section in my review.

Difficulty: 6

Ehh... This Sonic 2 hack isn't that hard as the original. Mostly thanks to the homing attack and the speed boosts that are everywhere throughout the zones. Though, the difficulty kind of depends on the zone you are currently in, but overall, it is fairly a bit easier than normal. The homing attacks makes it too easy to destroy badniks, monitors, damage bosses, and makes it easier to run faster. The speed boosts that are literally everywhere makes it way too easy to run fast throughout the zones. Not much else to say.

OVERALL: 9.3

Well, thats about it for my review. Just not sure how I'll submit it since the site appears to be down at the moment but I should be able to submit it eventually. Thanks for reading my review and have a nice day!
