AVGN vs Dr Wily Review   Zircron Swift
I normally stay clear of hacks. Increased difficulty and different level design is normally what's different, and I normally like to seek something new. There is the odd few hacks that have greatly different level designs, and those are interesting. Yet there is one hack that caught my eye, one that I wanted to play. It featured one of the most angry video gaming nerds ever. Yes, this game features the Nerd in Megaman's place. I wonder if the game will include parts of the Nerds Power Suit. Maybe the Power Mat will be in placement of the Wood Shield (and maybe be more useful). Will the levels be different? The anticipation is almost killing me. Lets look into this hack.
So the game starts off just like Megaman 2, as this is a sequel to that game. The story tells us how Megaman had defeated all the robot masters and was about to defeat Dr. Wily, until Dr. Wily launched a trap killing Megaman in the process. Now Dr. Wily has re-built all 8 of his robot masters and is about to take over the world, making all the levels much more difficult. But then, a new hero arises. He won't stop until all terrible games in the world have been reviewed and have been warned not to play them.....na, just kidding about the last part. The Nerd steps into Megamans shoes and goes to defeat Dr. Wily himself. But when the title screen comes up, I'm not thinking: "yay", I'm thinking "Megamans dead?!? WHY!?! *cries*" Of course this is a hack, and it never happened ever in the series. But Did they have to kill Megaman? It makes a fair plot-device. But could they have at least said Megaman was incredibly damaged and could not fight and finish Dr. Wily, in which when he recovers, it would be too late? Well, that's the story, so I'll just play along. And why does Dr. Wily spend most of his time "rebuilding" the same robot masters that can be defeated by the greatest robot warrior ever? Why not make stronger robots while your at it? Well, Dr. Wily is suffering a serious case of SEVS (Stupid Evil Villain Syndrome) *waits for something*.....Oh good, that won't happen then.....Long story.
The 8-bit design for the Nerd is interesting. He looks like one of those anime scientists that mess with chemistry a lot. I can see that "c" frown on him, almost makes me want to swear about how horrible this game is, until I realized this might be a good hack (as I have yet to play it), and I don't normally swear. Damn you, Nerd, and your Nerdiness. When you press start, the Nerd teleports just like the original game, and you get to play. The robot masters are still there on the level select, just switched around a bit. Understandable. I normally start with Metal Man, and this is no exception. The Metal Blades are so broken. But maybe it won't be the Metal Blades, maybe it'll be something like the Power Glove or something. I can't wait to see what it is!
So the music is untouched, every tune is just as it were. Excellent! I love the music in this game. It's legendary to say the least. Your primary weapon is....a gun? Ok, and it says "Z" on the menu screen. Why not something like the Zapper or something if it's going to be a.....Oh....that's what the Z stands for *palm slaps on forehead* duh.....Ok, I'm running around this level, you can collect energy tanks like the original, you lose the same health like the original, the level looks the same 1:1, apart from those dropping spiked things, there appears to be an extra one there. And there appears to be holes where there wasn't one before. There are the same amount of enemies, and they take the same amount of hits to kill. Ah, I see what's going on. When they said "each level much more difficult", they just changed the original level design a bit to make it a little less convenient, and therefore, making it only a little more difficult.
Why is Dr. Wily making these levels a little less convenient? Why not just create a level filled with spikes? That will sort anyone seeking to stop him out. Dr. Wily shouldn't be out with this bad a case of SEVS. The only other thing that has changed is the colour scheme, which in fairness, it pretty nice as it highlights the seriousness of Dr. Wily taking over the world. It makes the game feel more dark and eerie than before, and you are the only one who can stop him. After defeating Metal Man, I received Metal-Blades. Ok, that's cool, but is there no relation to the Nerd with new weapons? i.e the Super Scope, the Power Mat, the Power Glove, the helmet thingy....anything?!? After playing through two levels, It's pretty much the same, but a slightly higher difficulty. Maybe the Wily Castle stages are different. So, just like any other Megaman hack I've played, the password system is not changed, along with the passwords.....Hehe *enters in final level password* Lets have a look at Dr. Wily Stage 1.
*Lands on the edge of a cliff* Wow, this is more like it. Half the screen is empty. Looks like I need to use Item 2 to get across. *uses Item 2, and hops on*, look at the birds, they can't land their eggs on me *crashes into wall* Damn! That used up all my power for Item 2. Now I need to get a game over to refill it, seeing as there are no enemies to help refill it. That's what I really hate about Megaman games. There is a spot where you have to use a certain weapon to get passed, and if you lose all your power in trying to achieve it, you're either screwed (like in the third game, Wily Castle Stage 3), or you have to grind to get the energy back (like the first or second one). At least in those game, there was some way to replenish it (the third game had energy tanks to fill them up as you did them, but when they were collected, they wouldn't re-spawn after death), but here, you have no choice but you get a game over, unless you are mega skilled in using Item 1 to reach the birds....oh wait, you can't fire during the use of that weapon, right?
So I try again, only higher, and get hit by the eggs, killing me, therefore, needing to get a game over to get enough energy to reach the wall. So I thought maybe I'll shoot them, in which I can't while Item 2 is in use. So I tried to jump over them, in which I failed time and time again. Now, this is "much more difficult", and to be fair, is challenging, but possible. But could you have at least had the kindness to give us some energy pellets to replenish Item 2 when we fail the first time? I gave up due to being sick of having to get game-overs to get the energy to get passed, which results in a death, which results in having to get a game-over to get Item 2 replenished to have another go, in which results in....and so on and so forth. What were they thinking?!?
Overall, I give this a 7.8/10     This is nothing special, aside from the Wily Castle Stages, which are just too hard. To be fair, the level designs were nice to an extent, and gave it a little boost of difficulty that makes you feel proud when you complete the level. But you really just need to jump over extra gaps, that's all. There are the same amount of enemies, they take the same amount of hits, there aren't any handicaps, the weapons don't relate to the Nerds Power Suit (disappointingly) aside from the Zapper, and the only big highlight is being able to play as the Nerd, in which is a novelty that is quickly faded away. this could have been so much more. But if it's someones first hack, then they have quite a bit of potential here.

Revenge of the Video Game Hero   tornadocam
One good thing about hacks is they sometimes are unique. Some hacks are very good others you just want to forget that you played them. In addition, you have hacks that go away from the series. That is what makes hacks creative and unique. This hack is no exception. Today I will be reviewing a hack of Mega Man 2 except this one has a different twist.  I will be comparing this hack to the original Mega Man 2
Story: 8
This story is unique and does show some creativity. Mega Man defeated all the Robot Masters from Mega Man 2 and destroyed most of Wily's fortress. However, Dr. Wily set a trap for Mega Man. Thus Mega Man was killed. With Mega Man out of the way Dr. Wily rebuilt his defeated armies and robot masters. With no Mega Man the world needed a new hero but who? The angry game nerd steps in Mega Man's Shoes armed with a buster pistol he sets out to stop Dr. Wily and avenge Mega Man's death. Okay, that was certainly a new story. Killing Mega Man I just don't know what to say I mean he is Mega Man. But that is what makes hacks so interesting. I like the idea that somebody else is filling in for Mega Man and to rise up against Dr. Wily. I think this plot has creativity. The only thing is how did the angry nerd get to step in Mega Man's shoes. Did he talk Dr. Light into it or is he working on his own. So that detail being left out could leave the plot a little loose. Still a nice unique plot. So 8 out of 10 sounds right.
Graphics and Controls 8
The graphics are really good in this game. They use the same graphics as the original Mega Man 2. Mega Man 2 was the game that put Mega Man on the map. The colors have not been changed at all. The sprites for the most part are the exact same as the original game. Now the nerd has a different sprite of course but that is because he is not Mega Man. Now, the stages have been changed. The graphics and colors are the same its just the layouts that are different.
With hacks its either hit or miss on controls. This one has some controls but there were a few minor issues. Sometimes it seemed like I was having to fight against the controls. It wasn't a whole lot in the game but it did occur. The original Mega Man 2 had some very smooth controls. I mean the controls are not bad by any means nor or they horrible. But they are not as smooth as the original game. So yeah, that brings the rating down somewhat. Thus, at the end of the day I give the graphics/controls a 8 out of 10.
Sound 10
Mega Man 2 had very good sounds in it. The original game had rocking tunes that made you just want to pause the game and listen. In fact it established the bar for future Mega Man games. The sounds Mega Man's buster makes and enemies shots were amazing. So how does this hack compare? Well to be honest there was not any changes. The tunes are still amazing, enemies still have their sounds, and the nerd sounds a lot like Mega Man when he is firing his pistol. It was so nice whoever made this game did not change the sound. I have played hacks were the sound was just bad. So, 10 out of 10 sounds about right.
Replay Value: 7
When I first played this game my first thought was this is an unique hack. Most Mega Man hacks I have played have been for the most part good. A few have fell below par. But this is the first were you are not playing as Mega Man or Proto Man. I think the maker of this game was trying to take an iconic franchise and do something new with it. I really like games that offer something new. Still, I'm a huge fan of Mega Man so it did kind of feel funny not playing as him throughout this game. Now, granted, this was a fun game to play and I had fun playing it. Its just probably if your a huge Mega Man fan your probably going to play the other hacks were you can play as Mega Man more. So I give it about a 7
Depth: 7
After Mega Man 2 Mega Man games set the bar for depth. Mega Man 3 set the trend for Mega Man games having huge amount of depth to them. Mega Man 2 had some depth to it. As Mega Man 2 had 8 stages and fortress stages. Also there was power ups and items to collect. The problem is you could not revisit a stage and some of the stages were short. This hack is about the same as the original game. There are not a lot of secret rooms like there have been in other Mega Man games and other Mega Man hacks. So compared to other Mega Man games I have played. This one has less depth to it than the others. Therefore, I give the depth 7 out of 10.
Difficulty: 7
Mega Man 2 (original version) had some difficulty to it. But it was and still is often regarded as a starter game for new Mega Man players. The original Mega Man 2 got new players used to the control and graphics of Mega Man. It was not so difficulty like the very first Mega Man game was that could turn gamers off. But it was no cake walk either. It was probably a 6 out of 10 in terms of difficulty.
This hack though, tries to increase the difficulty. The main reason why this is a step up in difficulty from the original is the maker decided to include pits. Pits are plentiful in this game. It is so easy to miss a jump or get shot and knocked into a pit. There are some places in this game that require some very precise jumping to avoid falling into a pit. There are certainly more spikes in this game than the original. In addition, enemies have been placed in tougher spots. They are found right near pits just waiting to send you to your doom. Moreover, enemies will try to gang up on you in this game and they tend to come in bunches. So you may be wondering why is the difficulty not an 8, 9 or 10 well I will explain?
The thing is after awhile you start to learn how to jump and deal with enemies around pits. Also robot masters can really take out enemies. So its like the game is trying to help you out. Also once I played this game a few times it just seemed like I was playing a slightly more advance version of Mega Man 2. I also found that unlike other Mega Man games some of the enemies can be manipulated or lured into better attack positions. Also just like Mega Man 2 the Robot Masters go down pretty quick. There are about 4 Robot Masters that go down with the buster pretty quick too or in this case the pistol. So while the game is sightly more difficult than the original version. Its nothing unbearable and is easily doable. I give it a 7 out of 10.
Overall: 7.8
Mega Man 2 avenge of the Nerd is a unique game. It was a fun game to play and I had fun playing it. The game though did have some problems though. Before I get into the negatives. I will start with the positives.
This game did have a few things going for it. Having the nerd step in the shoes of Mega Man was interesting and seemed like it was trying to offer something new. I liked the idea of having somebody else feel in the shoes of Mega Man or even Protoman. I really felt like the maker of this game was trying to start something new here. I also like how the sound was not changed. Mega Man 2 had an awesome sound to it so changing the sound was not needed. I also think the game slightly more difficult than the original game was pretty well done too. Its not one of those games that is going to make you throw the controller down or stop playing the game. On the other hand, its not one of those games that is so easy.
Now for the negatives. I know this is a hack and one thing about hacks is you can change the story in the games. But why did the maker have to have Mega Man Killed. I mean having Mega Man killed would kind of take Mega Man out of the title game. What could have been done is have Mega Man wounded so he needed repairs the Nerd steps in to fill in while the blue hero is recovering. That would have made a lot of sense and still offered something new. Second, I would have liked to have seen how the Nerd got to feel in the blue hero's shoes. Was he picked by Dr. Light or did he volunteer that is one of those cliff hangers. The controls while not terrible could have been done better. Sometimes it did seem like I was fighting against the controls. I found this to be common in boss battles. I know this is a  hack and I expected a few flaws in the controls. Finally, not being able to play as Mega Man or his brother Proto Man might be odd to some people. Even though the Nerd controls like Mega Man its not Mega Man. Compared to other hacks its one I play a little less due to that reason.
Overall, I give the game a 7.8. Its a good game, a fun one and one I would recommend as it does try to offer something new. The game does have flaws though but for the most part these are minor flaws. If you are not bothered by these flaws then you will find nothing wrong with this game. I think the maker of this game did a good job in trying to offer something new. Despite the flaws. I do not think this game was rushed by the maker or anything like that. It is obvious this took some time. So anyway, Yes I think this would be a good game to play if your looking for something new.
