Worms: Blowing Up BuildingsWorms Forts: Under Siege is yet another game where a bunch of homicidal worms blow the ever living crap out of each other using a ridiculous arsenal of various explosives. This Worms game, however, has a twist. Not only are the worms throwing explosives at each other, but now they’re blowing up their homes as well. Worms Forts: Under Siege brings in a whole new game play by introducing forts for the worms to launch attacks from.
Graphics: 3Despite the fact that this is the second Worms game to be in 3D, it seems there is no improvement in the graphics. Worms Forts:: Under Siege was released around the end of the Xbox’s lifespan, yet it still looks like a relic from the Play Station or Nintendo 64. The game’s saving grace is the collection of weapons. The weapons are really well designed despite their crude appearance. The graphics on this game could definitely use some improvement.
Sound: 4While it is an improvement on the graphics, the sound doesn’t present much more to the game. Sure, the explosions are nice. The worms can say funny things every once in a while. Except when it comes down to it, that’s really about it. There’s nothing else that’s particularly interesting about the sound in this game.
Addictiveness: 7Worms Forts: Under Siege does have some interesting game play involved. The primary goal in the game is to use your various guns, bombs, and sweet old ladies to destroy your opponent’s worms and fort. Whether you play a simple versus game with a friend, or a one on one on one on one with low gravity and maximum ammunition, Worms Forts can provide fun gameplay for some time. After a while it can get somewhat monotonous, but there’s nothing quite like strapping an explosive to a hippo and crashing it into a hospital. That makes sense in context. I swear.
Story: 3The little bit of story that exists in Worms Forts is just used to set the stage for whatever explosions you’re going to be creating once the game begins. The Campaign consists of four different storylines, each one based on a different historical civilization (Greek, Roman, Oriental, and Medieval). The worms often take the places of notable people during these eras, and promptly use high powered explosives to do what they need to do. The story serves more to explain the setting than actually tell a story or give the game meaning.
Depth: 4There are two main modes of play. The first mode of play would be the missions, in which you have to complete a specific goal. The other mode of play is multiplayer, where you play against your friends or AI in an attempt to destroy each other’s worms and forts. This is the full extent of the gameplay. You are allowed to modify the match settings in multiplayer, but your control is somewhat limited. The only other notable feature is an encyclopedia about the Worms universe that you can unlock pages for, despite the fact that you’re never going to read it.
Difficulty: 6At its most basic, Worms is easy to learn and understand. You point weapon, and you shoot weapon. Once you get into the game however, you will meet several challenges along your way. First of all, you have to figure out how to actually aim most of the weapons. Some are intuitive with the point-and-fire system, but many are more difficult to use. These weapons use an artillery style firing mechanism, meaning you have to calculate the arc you’re firing at and how much power you’re using, also taking into account the distance of your target and the wind speed at the time. Once you master the weapons firing, however, the game becomes much easier.
Overall: 5Worms Forts: Under Siege is a simple game with a simple premise. There is no over thinking this one. Each game comes down to who has the bigger bombs. Features in the game are limited and its design is less than perfect. With that said, the game is still a fun game at times. There is nothing more satisfying than landing your explosive fridge right up against your opponent’s fort. Sometimes simplicity isn’t a bad thing. Don’t go out of your way for this game, but if you get a chance to play it then give it a shot!
