South Park: The Stick of Truth Review by: zanderlex - 9.3/10
The StickI had this game sitting around for the longest before I finally decided to download it and play it and I’m starting to wonder why I didn’t do that a long time ago because the game is so much fun. I’m not really a fan of the South Park show, if it’s on I’ll watch it and be entertained, but I won’t go out of my way to watch it, however this is different. The guys who make the show are very clever and in some cases, know how to make comedy work, and they put all of their knowledge into the creation of the game to make it look and feel great. It looks just like the show would, and it’s very funny and both unique and clever in so many ways.
GRAPHICS: 10/10
The graphics are as good as they can be, it’s not like the graphics can look any better because they literally look exactly like the show. Every cut scene, like the one at the beginning right when your family introduces themselves looks like you are watching the show, not just because of the graphics, but because of a combination of other things as well. The way the actual gameplay looks isn’t any different either, it always looks like the show instead of a game and a bunch of the random animations look amazing as well such as some of the battle animations and the little visual slide before each battle. If the graphics looked the same but the actual show had much better graphics, then it would have been a failure, but the graphic of the game are spot on with what the South Park universe really looks like so it literally can’t be improved and for a grade will get a perfect 10 out of 10.
SOUND: 10/10
In terms of how awesome they are, the sounds of the game are just as amazing as the graphics. With most games, there’s either no voices, there’s voices for only some characters, or when there’s a game based on a show or movie, a lot of the time there’s different voice actors for the game than what there is for the show/movie but that’s not the case here. This game is one of the few instances where the voice acting is above and beyond. Not only do the actual voice actors from the show work for the game, but there’s also an amazingly large assortment of dialogue, which is mostly the kind of stuff that you would hear in the show so again, like graphics, it really feels like you are watching the show instead of playing a game. There’s always something silly, clever, or outright dumb being said. It’s what makes the show popular and it defiantly gives the game some life. There’s a scene near the beginning of the game where I tried to talk to Eric’s mom and he says “Don’t talk to her, she’s not part of the game” Even when they don’t have a voice, or a reason to talk, they find a clever and fun way to sneak something in.
Aside for the voices, there’s a ton of other great aspects about the sound, there are so many cool sound effects and there are a few nice music pieces as well, but the voice acting is really what takes the cake. For a grade, this aspect gets another perfect 10 out of 10.
ADDICTIVENESS 10/10
Why wouldn’t you find this game to be very addicting? It’s a massive RPG with so many funny things floating around. It has all sorts of comedy that you would see from the show and all sorts of dumb stuff like aliens, zombies, and farting and if that’s not something that will keep you entertained, then this isn’t really the game for you. Although, if you aren’t already a fan of the show and know about it’s kind of humor, then you might not be interested and might end up wanting to stay away from the game but if you like any part of the show and know how it works, then you will find yourself enjoying this game like crazy. There’ so much to do in the game and you will never lose interest, so for that the grade for addictiveness is going to be another perfect 10 out of 10.
STORY: 7/10
Honestly, the story isn’t anything that’s clever, the story is just the random stuff that the guys behind the show put together, and if you know the show then you know that the show is literally just a bucket of randomness and nonsense. Not to mention a few crazy out of this world things. Yes there is a story, but the game isn’t about the story, it’s about the craziness along the way. Let’s face it, you aren’t going to go and buy a South Park game for the story, you’re going to see the title and be like “I know nothing about the game but I’m going to get it anyway because it’s South Park.” The game revolves around the comedy, and the story is nothing more than comedy, which revolves around the Stick of Truth which starts off as a game between town kids and eventually grows into a massive fight between aliens, zombies, and the government. There’s a story but that’s not what you play this game for, and for a grade, the story is going to get a 7 out of 10.
DEPTH: 8/10
For one, there’s a ton of character customization. When you first create your character, you can pretty much make them look like anything you want. There’s 40 different hairstyles, 30 shirts, a ton of different glasses and facial features and for each one, you can choose between roughly 50 different colors. That’s more than 2000 different hair combinations and literally millions of different combinations for how your character looks, and if you ask me, that’s a lot. Aside for that, the game has an amazing
selection of NPC characters and settings as well as a large collection of items for you to collect and sell. Overall, the game is pretty big and depending on how you play the game, there can be even more, so for a grade, depth is going to be an 8 out of 10.
DIFFICULTY: 6
The game can be quite hard at times because of the way that the battle system works, which requires you to be quick. Every time you attack, or defend yourself, there’s a specific time during the attack where you need to press a button or else your attack/shield won’t work, and this window for you to press the button won’t stay for long. Aside for that, the game is okay when it comes to difficulty, if you ever find yourself in a tough jam where you do all your attacks correctly and don’t seem to be winning, then all you need to do is grind for some items and money so you can buy better equipment and then you will be ready to try again. Overall the game is pretty easy aside for a few times where you need to grind and be quick and for a grade, difficulty gets a 6.
OVERALL: 9.3/10
Overall the game is a blast. You don’t even have to pay attention to the gameplay to enjoy it, just talk to other characters, interact with the environment and watch the story unfold and you will be laughing non stop. If you do decide to actually pay attention to the game play, then the game will be even more fun and you will enjoy the game so much. It’s a lot of fun, and you have to believe the game is a lot of fun or else the developers wouldn’t have announced such a massive sequel, so if you get a chance to play the game, give it a shot because you probably won’t be disappointed, especially if you can get the game when it’s on sale, which would be quite a steal for the amount of stuff the game offers. In general, South Park: The Stick of Truth is definitely worth your time and for a grade, it’s going to get an amazing 9.3 out of 10.
