Food Fight!!!!!!!! (Atari 7800) (Overall) Food Fight was originally an arcade game released in 1983 and was ported to the Atari 7800 in 1986. You are a guy named Charley Chuck and all he wants to do is eat his ice cream! What is in the way of Charley and his scrumptious ice cram cone? In your way is some chefs, I bet they want him to eat healthy but hes not going to let them bring down his good times.
You are in a room with four chefs, a load of food on the floor, and your ice cream on the left side of the screen. If the chefs touch you, you will lose a life. You can hit the chefs with food (sure you could have guessed that from the name of the game!). Some of the food that will be flung are bananas, watermelons, pies, peas (that look more like oatmeal), and tomatoes. I have to say it is a blast throwing food in the face of your enemies. You can also fall into holes. The dark holes is where new chefs will come out when one is killed by taking a face full of food. You will be able to tell which ones you can step on and which you can't.
The controls in Food Fight are very smooth. I have played alot of games for the Atari 7800 that feel clunky and almost unplayable. The response time is perfect, what I mean by that is when you press down you go down as soon as you hit the button, you may wonder why I am even saying that but like I said before I have play very many games that have bad controls for this console.
The gameplay is fun and fresh. Who doesn't love food fights? Food Fight gets an 8 for Overall.
overview- Fun gamplay and good controls.
(Graphics) The graphics are pretty good for the Atari 7800. The Atari 7800 was made to compete with the Sega Master System and Nes but as anyone who is familiar with this console knows that the graphics just don't stack up. To set everyone straight I am not and will not compare this game to games on other consoles for this review, just other games for the system it was ported to.
Your character looks great, most of the food looks good, and the colors of the ice cream change from level to level. The only problem I have with the graphics is that the background is black. I really wish they used a better color! It does have a great classic arcade look though and I love that about Food Fight.
When you hit the chefs with food they will change colors and fly off the screen and it makes me laugh every time. Why couldn't it be like that in real life? You toss a slice of pizza at your buddy and he turns purple and flies around the room. When you die all the food in the stage flies all around your face but the best and I mean best silly thing that happens in the game is when you eat your ice cream. When you finally make your way to the ice cream cone your mouth opens up like a snakes and your tongue raps around it. It is almost scary! The first time I got the ice cream I didn't know if I wanted to laugh or jump back.
The graphics for Food Fight get an 8, if it wasn't for the plain background It would have got at least a 9.
overview- overall good and silly graphics.
(Sound) The music is pretty good in this game. You get an opening music theme, a song when you get your ice cream, a jingle when you get a one up, and a death theme. You also have a walking noise when you move. Just like the graphics this game has a great arcade feel (well its an arcade port so we should hope it has an arcade feel).
The walking noise is pure Atari. For some it may be a little annoying but for any Atari lover it will bring back some nice fuzzy feelings.
The opening music is a little screechy but not too bad. I do love the death music. For some reason it reminds me of Pac-Man, but it is in no way as memorable as Pac-Man's death theme.
I will give the sound a respectable 7. It could have been better but I like it anyways.
Overview- quite a few different music tracks, alright sound.
(Addictiveness) Oh boy this is were Food Fight really shines! Like most arcade games, it was made to get you hooked and this game does that very well.
Food Fight is just a fun game that you will want to play over and over again. The silly graphics and fun gameplay will keep you playing no matter how many times you die.
Come on you have to get that high score! Don't worry, you don't need any quarters, this is a home console port! You can keep playing as long as you want. I give the Addictiveness a 10 because I am totally hooked.
Overview- Fun, Fun, Fun, It will make you want to keep playing.
(Story) There is no story for Food Fight. Do you really need a story for something as complex as a dude that just wants to eat ice cream? Your character and the chefs all have names and that's about all the story you are going to get.
Overview- I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM! No story.
(Depth) Food Fight has the same amount of depth as most other arcade games of its time. You could compare the depth to classics like Pac-Man, Frogger, and Space Invaders.
As the levels progress not much really changes. Same stage, just new food and the ice cream is a different color and moved. there are more holes as you get further into the game and that's about it.
There is really not much to say about the depth of this game. I give it a 5. Its an average score and it shouldn't discourage you from playing this game.
Overview- Not alot of depth but that's ok.
(Difficulty) Food Fight has the perfect amount of difficulty. There are three difficulty settings so pick the one that suits you best.
As the game goes on the chefs get faster and seem to come at you harder. Like I said before there are more holes to fall into and your ice cream is melting fast! You better hurry!
For me Food Fight is right on the money when it comes to difficulty (which helps with the addictiveness of the game). I give it a 7.
Overview- Food Fight is just right!
(Ending) Food Fight is my favorite game for the Atari 7800 and a game that I play very often. Atari seems to have the best arcade ports and this game is the perfect example of that.
Everyone should play this game. You may not like it or you might fall in love with it but all I know is Food Fight is worth any amount of Viz that you will have to pay.
I hope you enjoyed my review and I really hope you enjoy this game!
