Boogerman - A Pick and Flick Adventure Review by: rcarter2 - 7/10
Grossest Game Ever MadeWhen you play your typical SNES game, I doubt the words that come to mind would be flatulence, belching, puss, boogers, and loogies. But as you can imagine from the title alone, Boogerman offers just that. This game is a platform game with the nastiest twist possible. You play to role of Boogerman, the superhero that jumps into Dimension X, which has been transformed into a world where every little kid insult (boogerhead, fart-breath, pizza-face) would be a compliment. As you can gather from "A pick and flick adventure", your main method of attack is to throw your boogers at your enemies. Along with that, you can hock loogies, burp, fart, or jump (the only traditional platforming aspect of this game) on your enemies. If you want to get in touch with your childhood where bodily functions were the funniest thing in the world, give this game a whirl.
Graphics: 8
As far as your typical 2D platform SNES games go, the graphics are what you would have as a standard for the SNES. But this game had a theme, and the developers did a very good job at going above and beyond that theme in every level. Every aspect of the environment is meant to be gross. In the first world (Flatulence Swamp) everything is covered in slime and snot. Throughout the game, you can jump on little pimples that are growing everywhere for bonus points. Some backgrounds contain random slimy tongues, ears secreting goo, ingrown hairs, and any nasty thing you can think of. Even the ropes you swing on are made of slimy boogers. Each world has it's own little theme, and none of them fail to stay uphold the theme of grossness. The fact that the theme is expressed so well is the reason why this game is rated high, but not rated higher because the graphics are still pretty standard as far as SNES goes.
Sound: 8
The sounds in this game do just what the graphics do. Almost every sound is likely to make you think "eww". You are going to hear a lot of squishing, popping, and toilet flushing in this game. And when you fart, burp, or hock loogies, you are going to get those sounds. What is even better is that they are so freaking accurate, it is funny. And there is a distinguished sound for the little burps and toots, and the BURPS and FARTS you can do.The music doesn't really follow much of a theme, but honestly, how are you supposed to portray gross bodily functions in background music. The music is a very upbeat and cartoonish, which is also very appropriate, as the graphics are cartoonish as well. The main problem is the fact that the sound effects are very consistent from beginning to end, so the noises lose their grossness effect after a while. You eventually won't notice them anymore.
Addictiveness: 8
I might be giving this a little too high of a rating in addictiveness due to repetitiveness, but I can't help but continue to have fun with such a farce game. It is probably the immature side of me that comes out when I play this game that makes me not get bored with it. Though the actions are repetitive, there uniqueness of this game makes it addictive. I enjoy playing through the different grossly themed worlds, and the bosses are just funny. A boss called Hickman, who is your typical stereotyped redneck with a live chicken as a boomerang/gun is hilarious. But keep in mind, you have to be in the mood for immature mood to play this game.
Story: 6
The bulk of your story is given to you in the beginning of the game. A device was made to save the world by sending all the worlds pollution and waste to Dimension X. A millionaire named Snotty Ragsdale goes undercover as a janitor to investigate the device for any dangers. After sneezing on the device, a hand comes from Dimension X, and snatches a part. Snotty Ragsdale changes into his Boogerman costume, jumps into Dimension X to get the piece back. Interesting little story, but I see one big problem with it (that really isn't a big deal). If Snotty Ragsdale is a millionaire, why can't he afford a better costume. A skin-tight green suit with holes in it, socks with his toes sticking out, and a rag as a cape should not be the superhero outfit of a millionaire. Just saying. But I regress. The story is unique and a good idea, but nothing is done to develop it further until the end, which is always a bummer.
Depth: 5
The depth of this game only goes as far as your typical platform game gives you. You get your opening story in the beginning, your ending story when you beat it, and nothing in between. There are a variety of enemies, environments, and other gross things, but that is about it. But I have to say that the chili pepper is by far the funniest power-up in video game history. You get the chili pepper, and your burps and farts are now also on fire. But that isn't the funny part. You also are able to fly by having flames rocketing you out your rear, propelling you trait up like a rocket ship. During this time, you get a long continuous farting while you fly. Awesome! But other than that, you don't get much variety and the game is pretty short.
Difficulty:6
The game is meant for children, no doubt about it. It is all the things little children hold dear as far as what makes them laugh. Gross is funny. With that comes low difficulty. At first, it is a bit hard to get used to, especially the bosses. But after playing for about 15 minutes, you are pretty much an expert and will fly through this game. It isn't ridiculously easy though. If it weren't for the bosses (which do get easier as you play), it would be exactly mediocre difficulty.
Overall: 7
In conclusion, this game is meant to be funny and get you in touch with your childhood, and this game does just that. Dive into your childhood, and throw away all sense of maturity, and you will have fun with this one. The graphics and sound do a good job at grossing you out. It is strangely addictive, though repetitive. You get a unique story, but it isn't developed vary much. You get a variety that is pretty generic to a lot of platform games, but you also can get a hilarious power-up, and the game isn't very difficult. You should only take about half a hour or less to play through. This game is your average booger throwing, pimple popping, loogie hocking, gas passing fun!
