And another thread here to question people. I wanted to make this thread because one time I thought about it and put it on my phone. I said it would be a good question to find out to ask people on vizzed. Has anyone eaten plantain before? Plantain is really a popular thing with black people, and well known in Africa, Nigeria some other places too. I'm not talking about a banana I am talking about this picture here.





There's a difference between the two its supposed to be a banana in a way. I guess it is, but here is a banana people would know about.





You can eat this straight away with plantain you can't. Also you can fry bananas, but I grew up knowing plantain and eating it more than bananas. Plantain you have to fry it before you can eat it. Since you can't eat it on its own. I don't think I have come across someone who has maybe some do at this point though I don't. So before I get way off tropic have you eaten a plantain before and if so what was your experience eating one?

no 8120 : Its a fruit its supposed to be a banana of a sort but you can't eat it raw you have to cook it in order to eat it. I never thought it was like a banana. Well actually I DID know it looked like one, but I didn't really research it because....well I never did until today which kind of surprised me to see to say its like a banana. '-'

I've never heard of a plantain before I read this thread, but now that I know what it is, I'm never going to eat it because my stomach can't even handle bananas, so there's no way I could handle that.

gamerforlifeforever : I think you should give it a go. Let me tell you something. I can't eat bananas why? Because I would vomit when eating a normal one. With plantain its very DIFFERENT this one I don't throw up on. Don't go knocking something unless you have tried it.

I eat bananas fairly frequently after school. It functions as a sort of pick me up that kicks in by the time I get to the gym to work out. This seems pretty different though aside from the appearance.  At a first glance it looks like an old banana but the very top part seems shorter. I've never heard of it, or can remember seeing one in person and I definitely haven't tried it.

I assume it's something that's culturally exclusive to Nigeria and some other African countries which is probably why I haven't encountered it, having never gone there. If I ever do though I will probably give it a chance at least, since I tend to like most fruits and am usually up for new experiences.

Zlinqx : See this is why your my bestie lol I love what you said in your post. If you do go someday please don't forget to tell me if you like it or not I would really want to know. Yeah I didn't think plantain was a banana type. So if I am able to eat this then I can't eat a normal banana well since you know as of why. Yeah plantain is well known with Nigerian people. My mother does buy it for me. Oh if you don't know there are two types. There is the first one I showed. Which is the soft one. Here is the other one.




With this plantain its hard it can make plantain crisps like this




it doesn't have much flavour, but I like to eat it from time to time. I am normally ask to make plantain chips for my mother when she buys the green ones. I think you would like it. also when fried I forgot to say I would add salt an pepper for taste.

Eniitan : The other type is interesting, it makes me think more of potatoes than bananas for all the reasons you listed. The crips looks similar to chips and since they have a more bland taste, they must also have a much harder consistency like potato chips. Though I would assume plantain crips are more popular than potato chips there. l If I can ever find a store or African foods shop that sells them I'll see if I can try some. Looks pretty cool, and would probably be less unhealthy

Zlinqx : All our food is really healthy including the green plantain. The yellow ones are not too sugary which is why I can afford to eat them most of the time. Glad to know this interests you more. I felt I owe more explaining details wise so you can understand a bit more on them.

Yes, actually. I have eaten it cooked before. As a matter of fact, I've even tasted it raw. (absolutely horrible)

My mom fried some up and I remember it tasting. . . interesting. I think I remember it being kindof bitter and starchy? I don't know. . . maybe it's been too long, maybe I've gotten too mixed up between the raw flavor and the cooked flavor, but that's what I remember.

When I read this title, I immediately remembered the word. I just couldn't attach it to a picture or any memories of it, then upon investigating this thread, the pictures you posted reminded me. So now I do know, and I can be the first user to say, "Yes, I have eaten this stuff" On this thread.

Not sure that's an accomplishment or anything.

Sword legion : Hmm.......Sword I don't think she cooked it right then. If that's the case. If I made it for you it would go with a Nigerian soup. Sorry to hear about your experience to do with that. The food is really good, but the problem is.....if you don't know how to make it properly or know the right food to have it with your first experience wouldn't be so nice. '-' 

Eniitan : I have no doubt that it's less unhealthy than potato chips. However I'm not sure if it's completely healthy all the time since any mass produced snacks regardless of what kind, will typically be highly processed and often times have additional ingredients. The case is probably the same here if I could find a bag. Homemade ones on the other hand can probably be healthy, but I might never be able to try those.

I'd still like to try them in some form though. Thanks for teaching me about them!

I have actually. I've only eaten it twice, and it was alright, I guess. I prefer regular bananas, but the plantain wasn't too shabby either. I think I got it fried at some Caribbean restaurant a few years ago. The biggest difference for me, taste wise, is that plantains aren't quite as sweet as bananas (or at least the ones I have had). 

RDay13 : You sir are correct about plantains not being sweeter than bananas which is true. I like eating plantains because I can't eat regular bananas as you know because if I do I will throw up. Its sad how there are things my stomach wouldn't allow me to eat, which I frankly find pretty annoying at times. This result to make me eating the same thing at most times. There will be other times I would eat something new, but mostly as you know from me eating pasta. That I would keep eating it over, and over not really getting bored of the food.

I've had it on a few different occasions before. It has an okay taste, but I find it to be pretty bland overall. I had them at this restaurant a few years ago (I can't remember the name of the restaurant at the moment). I don't have any problems with indigestion or having an averse reaction to most foods, so I didn't have a problem eating plantains. They just taste boring to me, maybe it was the way they were prepared, or maybe they just tasted dull in comparison to the other things I was eating that day. Who knows? The sweeter taste of bananas is more appealing to me though. 

Razor-987 : That's fine not everyone is going to enjoy eating plantain. And their experience of may not liking it would come from how it was cooked and prepared. I can understand why you said what was needed. Most people would prefer bananas over plantain. I just wish for the fact that I can eat bananas. sadly I can't since as I said before it would make me to vomit to even try and eat one. I'm not surprised that I am able to eat plantain since that itself is a banana in a way. I didn't think it was before until I googled up plantain and to find that out.

Plantains are kind of weird so I've been curious to try them but hesitant to take the first step. I figure I'll do it some time but for right now I'm fine with just regular bananas

yoshirulez! : Lol....I doubt there is a plantain flavoured yogurt....since I don't think I have come across finding one as of yet. Yes plantains are weird to those who are not really used to having it regularly. I hope maybe one day you get to try them though as said its not as sweet as regular bananas, so I am not too sure if you will like it at first hand. It only depends from when you try it, and it needs to be cooked properly in order for you to enjoy it, or you will experience what the others have. If it was my way I would do it myself, and to give it to you. So you can have the best experience of eating the plantain.
