Have you ever read a newspaper or a magazine, whether it’s a physical one or online, and notice mistakes? Whether it’s something that’s spelled wrong, a word in the wrong place, or simply something that is wrong? It’s rare, because it’s essentially not supposed to happen, but it does happen at times, and I want to know what you think.
Back in the day, things like newspapers had to be very careful, they were giving you news, so they could not afford to have mistakes anywhere, but as of late, it seems that more and more mistakes are popping up in all sorts of articles. In fact, a study was done almost a decade ago that showed on average, in every 100 featured articles, there are 200 to 250 mistakes, and that out of every 100 articles, only about 10 of those mistakes were ever corrected.
I have seen this all the time, but I only really started thinking about this recently when I was reading the paper on July 4th. I was reading a sports article that claimed the day before, my favorite baseball team tied their team record with 5 Home Runs. Just by looking at that, I knew it was wrong, I went through old articles online and found that THE SAME journalist reported the team breaking their record with 8 Home Runs less than a year ago.
Did the guy who reported it not remember? Did he not care about actually looking for the facts? What the hell happened to the editors? They are supposed to be making sure that the newspapers give us real information. So, where some of the editors so clueless that they couldn’t simply look up the info to see that it was wrong?
But why are they doing it though? Are newspapers just starting to get so lazy because of people going online for their news that they just don’t care If there are mistakes? Do they simply not see a mistake when there is clearly one? Do the newspapers even care anymore or are they just moving along hoping that people don’t notice so that they can get by with as little effort as possible?
What do you think of when newspapers or magazines publish mistakes or false info? Does it hurt what you think of the paper and its credibility? Or do you just brush it off as a simple mistake?
