Ever since I started playing Black Ops III, I found a new respect for the Call of Duty series, and because of that, even though I don’t like this game nearly as much and would have probably never played it in the first place, I have been able to o grow to like it. It’s a great game if you want to waste away an hour every now and then.
GRAPHICS: 7/10
The graphics aren’t entirely wonderful, but they are pretty good. The graphics work and give plenty of detail to the enemies and the environment, however they make the game look like it’s a few years older than it really is. Yeah, it’s a handheld game, so in a few ways, the quality does get a bit compromised, but other games have been able to make diminished graphics work to their advantage, just not this game. There are a couple cut scenes and they both take real life footage and game footage and look pretty sweet.
SOUND: 8/10
The sounds of the game are pretty sweet actually, just like what most other CoD games manage to pull off. You have some nice music, a nice array of effects, and some sweet voice acting. CoD is known for having some top dog voice actors for their games, and this game was no exception, but again, like with the graphics, having the game play on a smaller device makes it seem like the quality drops a bit from what it could have been on a console. Still fairly good though.
ADDICTIVENESS: 8/10
If you like FPS games and have a Vita, then you might as well give this game a shot because it can be fun, you have various survival style matches as well as a pretty interesting campaign mode to go through. You won’t have as much fun in multiplayer modes as the console games, but they still entertain you, and there’s a large number of different missions so you should never be bored. You might even find yourself doing some missions over and over just to try out different tactics.
STORY: 7/10
The story of this game works out like any other CoD game, with the campaign revolving around various missions and objectives whether it’s escorting, escaping, assassinating, or everything in between. The game mainly takes place in the 70’s through 90’s I believe and leads you through 10 missions before you complete the main campaign.
DEPTH: 9/10
I would say that the depth is the greatest strength of the game because there’s so much to it. First let’s look at the sheer size of the campaign mode. Of course, it’s not as big as the campaigns of the console versions or other games, but still has a lot to offer. The campaign has two different modes, you have 10 Operations and 5 different Time Trial games which all put you in various scenarios. Then you have the Hostiles mode, which is just a survival game, pitting you against rounds of enemies to see how long you can last before you are finally killed. Lastly you also have the multiplayer mode which is its own world of fun with other players. Overall the game has a lot to offer you.
DIFFICULTY: 5
If you don’t know how to play FPS games, then you might start off with some trouble until you get used to the game and even if you are an FPS pro, you still might have some trouble. Sometimes the controls are a bit off and every now and then, because of the size of the screen, you might misjudge something, and because of that, you could end up moving past what you need or not getting there at all, or just having a few problems with the sensitivity in general. Overall, the game is quite easy, but you need to understand that there will be a few times where it can be frustrating.
OVERALL: 8/10
The game isn’t all that expensive, you could get it new for $20 at Gamestop, and for the amount of stuff that you get, I would say that it’s definitely worth the price. Sure there’s a few issues here and there and it can be frustrating every now and then, but like I mentioned before, if you want to play the game for an hour at a time for some quick fun when you are bored, the game will be a great form of entertainment, especially if you are a fan of the FPS genre. Overall, it’s a decent Vita game and is worth a solid 8 out of 10 as a grade.
