Background: SonSon is a game released in 1984 by Capcom, as one of their first games. It is based on Journey to the West, and revolves around SonSon (Son Wukong), a magical monkey deity who travels with TonTon (Zhu Bajie) in search of enlightenment and Buddha to rescue his allies. Gameplay: The first player controls SonSon, and the second controls TonTon. The goal is to scroll from the left to the right of the screen, and to defeat any enemies that encounter you in the meantime. You must travel across 20 sections, fighting dangerous scores of enemies such as monsters and animals. You always scroll horizontally, and you can press up and down to ascend to and descend ledges. Son and Ton have one basic attack, a simple shooting attack. Pressing the action button allows you to shoot bullets, from either Son's staff or Ton's pitchfork. This attack kills most enemies in a single hit. However, if the enemies touch you once, you lose a life. After that, you are returned to the battlefield upon a magical cloud. You are invincible while on it. Enemies include Deku, Burigan, Rania, Anbre, Dragonflies, Chains, Spin Skulls, Devils, and Musashi. Deku and Burigan are quite similar, as they come in groups of six and predetermined patters. They follow you around based on how close you are when approaching them. Rania leaps out of the water below and is completely unpredictable. Anbre usually fights in rows of four. Dragonflies come in varieties; red and blue. Red dragonflies approach you in rows, and attack in short intervals of 20 seconds, while automatically positioning themselves in an advantageous situation. Blue dragonflies loop in a counterclockwise direction, and are very hard to kill. Chains are usually the penultimate bosses in a level, and are typically guarding skull walls. They shoot bombs and have to be killed from a specific position. Spin skulls are actually quite durable, as they create a blockade and interrupt your progress. They also move around to end your life. Either you can shoot and kill them with time and effort, or you can find a way to outmaneuver them. Musashis come in pairs and are very fast and abrupt. Use caution. Last but not least, Great Devils are the end bosses. They come in sets of three, and in colors of red, blue, and green. They frantically follow you, and take lots of effort to effectively kill. They have big shields, which takes time to destroy, and are quite frail shortly after. Killing them without their shield ends the level. They also throw hammers, which are quite dangerous. Food gives you points, and collecting 8 pieces of it allows you to get POW. Pow kills all enemies and coverts them to food. Collect that for points. This game has lots to offer. 8/10 Graphics: For 1984, the graphics are satisfying and crisp. Son and Ton fluidly scroll on screen, along with everything else. The enemies flow with the surroundings, and the game, while old, manages to recreate the Chinese story. 8/10 Sound: The music is satisfactory, sounding very Chinese-inspired. The sound mesh well with this. 6/10 Addictiveness: This game is swell. I could always play it, and never get bored of it. The gameplay just wraps you up. It's actually very fun 8/10 Story: It's basic, yet acceptable. Son Wukong and Zhu Bajie are working together to save Xuanzang and encounter Buddha, in an attempt to change their fates and collect Buddhist sutras. (Long story. Wukong was originally a gifted monkey who gained much power to become one of the most influential demons in the world and reign supreme over everyone. When he defied Hell's attempt to reincarnate his soul through writing his and others' names out of the book of life and death, he was sent to heaven to be disposed of. He was offered a role by the Jade Emperor, which turned out to be the lowest among gods; the horse protection god. He rebelled, thinking of himself as a sage equal to heaven, and set the cloud horses free. While the Emperor was forced to acknowledge his status, he still goaded him into his old position. When he was excluded from heaven's royal banquet, which included everyone except him, he went mad. He gained immortality and longevity through Xi Wangmu's peaches and Laozi's pills. With this newfound power, he defeated heaven's best; 100,00 warriors, 28 constellations, 4 Heavenly kings, Nezha, and Erlang Shen, heaven's general. After Taoist and Buddhist collaboration, he is successfully captured and placed in Laozi's crucible to be burned into a liquid so Laozi can regain his immortality. He survives and escapes nearly 50 days later and gains the ability to identify and vanquish evil with his gold gaze fiery eyes. He proceeds to vanquish all of heaven's forces until the Buddha is recruited to the cause. He traps Son in his palm, and keeps him contained for 500 years. Guanyin is looking for disciples to protect a monk named Xuanzang during his pilgrimage to retrieve Buddhist sutras. Wukong accepts, in exchange for freedom. The catch is that he is given a headband that constrains his head and gives him unbearable pain, which is activated through a special chant. He is joined by Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing. Together, they help Xuanzang travel to India. Afterwords, he is granted Buddhahood). (Ton is jealous and quite obese. He always tried bringing Son down, but behind his lust and greed, there is a story that had yet to be told. Zhu Bajie was originally known as Marshal Canopy, and was the commander of Heaven's Navy. After sexually harassing the Goddess of the moon, he was banished to earth to redeem himself. He is helping Xuanzang to gain reentry into heaven and atone for his questionable, numerous sins). 4/10 Depth: The game is actually very simple in concept. It is complex in it's execution, with tons of tricks and traps for the unassuming. 6/10 Difficulty: The game is very much easy. It can be tricky at times, but is simple to learn and understand. 4/10 Overall: SonSon is quite fun. Play it if you like platforming, shooting, and the like. 8.8/10 Gameplay: The first player controls SonSon, and the second controls TonTon.
