DRAGON BALL Z: SUPERSONIC WARRIORS REVIEW Okay so, a while back I was at my friend’s house and we played this game, I didn’t really think this was a good game to review, until I started thinking about it, and thought y’know what this would make for a great review. So here it is. GRAPHICS: 7/10 The graphics in this game are stellar, the character models look great, and the energy blasts are also very good looking and represent the series well. But the reason that I don’t give the graphics a higher score is because of the backgrounds, I found them to be quite boring, and uninspired. And while you might think that that’s a nitpick, I don’t really think that it is. I find backgrounds to be pretty important in not only a fighting game, but especially a dragon ball game.
Depth: 9/10 There is a real good amount of things to do in this game. There is a story for every character on the game, and z battle mode, these are the 2 biggest modes in the game and there is quite a bit of time to put in to it. Of course there is also your regular exhibition mode, and I found that the multiplayer mode (I used multiplayer mode on my phone on a gba emulator with a friend) really, really fun.
Difficulty: 6/10 There are 3 different difficulty levels in this game, beginner, easy, and normal. Beginner is really, and I mean really easy, It’s probably even too easy for beginners as it doesn’t give you a big enough challenge to even learn anything, easy I think is a better way to start off if you’re a beginner, it gives enough of a challenge to learn all of the controls and other important stuff, but isn’t too difficult. Normal is well, normal. The game is not very difficult even in normal mode, but it definitely isn’t too easy either, it’s less difficult than most fighting games in my opinion. Gameplay: 7/10 The gameplay in this game is really quite simple for a fighting game, but it’s a lot of fun. The special moves you do depend on your position if you’re above your opponent you’ll a different move than you’ll do if you’re next or under the opponent. To do this special move all you need to do is press 2 buttons and the-dpad (Down if you’re above, left or right if you’re next to your opponent, etc) There are also small energy blasts which can give you time when you need some. (But there is a problem with this and I’ll get to it later)
Like most Dragon Ball games you can only do these special moves after you’ve charged to a certain amount (You need less for small energy blasts than big special moves obviously) There is one thing that takes this gameplay down quite a bit for me.
The little energy blasts can be really annoying in multiplayer mode. This game for me anyway was very much a multiplayer game, apart from the story mode, and a very tiny bit of z battle mode, I only played this game in multiplayer. spamming small energy blasts is really effective, and really easy to do. See when you spam these energy blasts (If you’re both human that is.) you don’t have time to move and even a little bit of health goes away when this blast hits you, and when you punch someone you also charge up, making it really easy to just punch a bit and then do these little energy blasts constantly.
Sound: 6/10 One word for the music in this game: Forgettable. I’ll be honest I completely forgot what the music was like when I started writing this, and after listening to it outside the game it didn’t really impress me. That’s not to say that it’s bad, its forgettable.
So why doesn’t it score lower then? Well the voice acting and sound effects.
Yeah they managed to get some voices in a little gba cartridge, and for the time anyway it sounds really good. In the pal release though they oddly enough chose to go with the Japanese voice actors, now don’t get me wrong I love the Japanese voice actors but like 60 percent of western audiences don’t. Not to mention ( in Holland and the UK anyway, I don’t know about other countries, to be honest.) We had the American dub, (along with another dub, I think it was Canadian.) Anyway the voice acting is really good and gives off the dragon ball feel. Plus the sound effects are great the energy blasts, the punches they all sound like dragon ball.
Story: 8/10 Now this is a pretty high score I know, but hear me out. Like I said before every character has their own story, which is quite ambitious, and I think it works out. For the main character the story plays out like it should and for other non-main characters and villains there are what-if scenarios. The story is so big there really is not a very good way to explain it, but I’ll try. The main story is about Goku and his friends trying to save various places and kill various villains. There is a lot more to it than that, but that’s pretty much the core of everything that happens.
I can’t explain the story as one cohesive thing, because well, in this game it isn’t.
Addictiveness: 8/10 This game is addicting, the controls are really good the gameplay is fun, and when you and your friend decide to not spam energy blasts, you can spend hours in the multiplayer mode. The story mode is really big and can also be addicting, but for me the most addicting part was definitely the multiplayer mode, I don’t really have a lot to say about the addictiveness other than that, because, well that’s really it.
OVERALL 7/10
This game is good, it’s an overall good game, it plays well, its fun it has good sound effects the graphics are good. Really I do recommend you play this even if you aren’t a dragon ball fan.
I think the best word to describe this game is; fun. By the way, I am really rusty at making reviews so sorry if this one isn’t that good, haha.
