It's been a week since Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted and I figured it was time for a spoiler filled thread now that many of us have had time to see it.
I'm not going to post spoilers in this first message but this thread is now open for people to post their unfiltered thoughts about the movie. Also, feel free to use the spoiler tags if you want to but hopefully people will see the thread title and understand what this thread is really all about and not come here if they haven't seen the movie yet. LunarDarkness2 : that actually got spoiled for me before I saw the movie. Of course it was obvious as they crossed the bridge together but still I was pretty annoyed that it turned out to be true.
However, I think it needed to happen. Han Solo has little to offer anymore as a character. Harrison Ford is 73 and likely wouldn't be able to reprise the role for much longer anyway. And really, the new movies shouldn't be about the old characters. The old characters needed to be there in order to get these new movies going but they shouldn't be the main heros anymore. geeogree : I completely agree with you. I tried explaining this to my dad, but I guess he was still shocked/angry that he wouldn't listen. That sucks that it got spoiled for you. Who spoiled it, or did you accidentally click something you shouldn't have? I completely agree with you. I didn't have a problem with it storywise of him dying in this film. It kinda brought parallel to the original films when Ben Kenobi died. However, I didn't like how he died. It was very un-Han Solo like. No last cracks. No final act of heroism. And he just fell off the bridge with no one trying to get his body back or honor him as the former general of the Alliance. |

play4fun : who was going to go back for his body exactly.... Rey, Finn and Chewie are the only ones that saw him die and were basically fighting for their lives when it happened. Then once they got away (which they nearly died in doing) the planet blew up. There was no way to get his body.
I agree though about the scene feeling a little off to the old Han Solo. However, it has been 30 years since that Han Solo has been seen and he's a parent now. That changes a person. LunarDarkness2 : Someone on Vizzed spoiled it and I gave them a 7 day ban for it. I agree though about the scene feeling a little off to the old Han Solo. I can't wait until the future movies to see who Rey really is, a lot of parts of the movie suggest that she could really be Lukes daughter, I spent hours after watching the movie putting together theories. |

I felt there were a couple similarities between the force awakens and a new hope. Random droid gets found with important data, a giant battle station, running from the bad guys when the millennium falcon is first seen. I thought it was good anyway though. I liked the scene when Rey found Luke and Anakin's light saber and the force went crazy for a moment. My mom saw it with me, and she made a point about when Rey was handing Luke his light saber. Supposedly Mark Hamill had gotten involved in some self-destructive practices. She said looking between the lines, Rey handing him his light saber could be like Mark being handed a second chance. zanderlex : I've considered that but I thought most Jedi didn't have families.... the prequel trilogies made it sound like Anakin having a kid was a really rare thing. |

The trailers were very misleading at times lol. Especially when they were making it look like Finn would be be the new lightsaber wielding hero, but nope, it's Rey. While I thought it would've been really cool to see a guy go from being a stormtrooper to becoming a Jedi, it's cool that a female is going to be wielding a lightsaber in this trilogy. |

gamerforlifeforever2 : I was actually really happy about that. The trailers made certain things seem obvious and they turned out to all be assumptions we made but not actually fact. Finn did use the lightsaber and did it terribly and nearly died as a result.
I was really happy the trailers gave away almost none of the storyline. Very few movies actually accomplish that feat. I was really happy the trailers gave away almost none of the storyline. Very few movies actually accomplish that feat. |

geeogree : So just saw it with my family for Christmas, fun. But I have to point out a few things. The Jedi order from the prequel trilogy are very much like a cult; they take young children from their parents from the ages of a few days to a couple years. The thing is Anakin was taken in much later at the age of ten. So he had already seen a lot of the outside compared to most Jedi which already makes him an odd duck in the Jedi order. A lot of people don't see it this way, but Anakin becoming Darth Vader did have a huge role in bringing actual balance to the force in the long run within the extended universe of the books which this movie already seems to be playing with. As Palpatine/ Sidious prophesied in episode VI, Luke actually ended up renewing both the light side and dark side of the force as he carried on the legacy of his father. In the new Jedi order, things like seeing Jedi get married is completely common, Luke merely became as one with the true force as he could within his life time bringing power and balance to both sides of the of the force in the process. And thus Jedi having families became much less of a taboo as it was in the prequel trilogy. On another note, I feel like Finn himself wielded the light saber extremely well giving his origins and all, for one Storm/ Clone troopers (Many storm troopers are actually clones from the prequel) have never been very force sensitive or skilled with melee combat weapons. Add this to the fact that light sabers are almost exclusively wielded by force sensitive people due to the simple fact they can predict and react on scales normal people could never dream of due the foretelling nature for the force. I could never imagine anyone who is not force sensitive to stand a chance against Kylo Ren in a light saber fight. Not only is he a direct descendant of Anakin (Who's midi-chlorian count was near the level of a gods, imagine if he had actually realized his potential as a force bearer) but he has had years of training with both the dark side of the force and light sabers. Truth be told Finn used the light saber better than Rey did before she realized that she needed to use the force to overcome Ren. Vanelan : That was my original theory, I thought of that while I was at the movie because of how Leia and her interacted at the end, but after the movie, once I started doing research, things started clicking.
First off, wouldn't Han or Leia have known? And why would they have separated? It makes more sense for her to be Lukes daughter because of... The scene when she first touches the lightsaber. If her age is about accurate, the timing that her family or whoever she was with, relates to the time when Luke left. One thing that caught me was what the thing keeping the lightsaber said. I don't remember what she said but it sounded like she wont find the people she was looking for if she goes back home, but will at the end of her journey, yet the journey was to find Luke. Frodlex : I just watched the movie again today with my 2 older daughters and Kylo Ren schooled Finn in a minute or 2. I dunno, I just didn't think he did all that well. He got beaten by the stormtrooper who was also using a melee weapon pretty easily.
I'm not saying he won't become a Jedi but with how badly he lost to both of those people I don't see it being likely. I would put Finn and Rey on par before she started using the force personally. Once she started using the force she was clearly more in command of that fight than Ren. Also, Ren is not fully trained, though he is trained. He's like Luke in Empire. He can use the force but he is not a master of it yet. Plus, he was injured before the fight even started. That gave both Finn and Rey a better chance going into the fight. zanderlex : I suspect that Rey might be a child of Luke's. Once Kylo Ren was Han and Leia's son and no one else was mentioned that Rey suddenly became the obvious choice for being Luke's daughter. I think it would be interesting if she because that would be pitting cousins against each other this time instead of father and son. I also noticed that part of the conversation with Mas (I believe that is her name). What Rey is looking for is no longer behind her but ahead of her. Maybe that meant finding her parents, and maybe it just meant finding herself as part of the Jedi and as a force user. Hard to know. The thing that is great about all these questions is that there are questions to ask and things I desperately want to find out. I'm excited about the next movie and I wasn't excited about the next movie after Phantom Menace came out. That gave both Finn and Rey a better chance going into the fight. zanderlex : I suspect that Rey might be a child of Luke's. geeogree : What she said wasn't that she was looking for something, but someone, specifically the people who left her to come back, so if it was her family, "mad" knew that rey would be reunited with her family at the end of the journey. |

zanderlex : possibly. I'm not saying I disagree with the possibility but I also think that the more likely scenario is that becoming a Jedi is the thing that will make her feel complete again rather than waiting for a family that is never coming back to get her on Jakku.
Still, I'm not discounting the possibility that she is Luke's daughter but I think the other possibility is more likely. Still, I'm not discounting the possibility that she is Luke's daughter but I think the other possibility is more likely. |

Wow. Just wow. It's estimated the movie made 153 million this weekend, and estimates usually fall below what they actually make but that's insane. Broke the record for biggest 2nd weekend by almost 50 million dollars that used to be Jurassic World, and 153 million would be the 10th biggest weekend of all time, yet it's the 2nd weekend.
It broke all the records for fastest to 100 mil-500 mil and biggest 3-10 day grosses and got to 500 mil a full week earlier than Jurassic World and is already the 15th biggest worldwide movie of all time, possibly 2-3 days away from being in the top 10. I was one of the many lucky people that was able to see Star Wars VII on Christmas night! Most of the movie is still fresh in my mind so I have a lot to talk about. In case no one read the title... SPOILERS! I'm having trouble deciding whether or not I liked this movie more than the originals (IV, V, and VI) but so far I'm leaning toward the originals. This is definitely better than the prequels though XD Don't get me wrong, I loved this movie and was very impressed with Disney's hard work. But I didn't think it was as good as the originals. I liked that in the originals, there were more/longer breaks in the action and I feel like the new characters in those movies were introduced better. In this new movie, the beginning wasn't so crazy but the entire rest of the movie was crazy. The breaks inbetween the action were usually less than a minute. Honestly, it was so intense for me that I was desperate for a break! It's actually funny now that I look back at it, but when I was watching the movie I was pretty frustrated. Every time there was a break in the action, it would go so silent but then suddenly, BOOM! an explosion or something like it. I wouldn't mind that as much if I wasn't in a theater with an almost-front-row seat The new characters were a nice fit in the movie, especially Rey and Kylo Ren. I liked how Kylo Ren didn't even need his mask to survive, I was pretty surprised by that. Even though the movie was intense, I was pretty satisfied with the ending. It was a little suspenseful but at least Rey found Luke Skywalker. Overall, I really liked the movie but it didn't feel nearly perfect like the originals did. I can't wait to see Star Wars VIII! PacmanandMariofan : I loved Kylo Ren, by having him take off the mask and then have him seem so calm and at the same time, looked extremely young, it showed a lot more about him and even made him seem a lot more evil as well. At first I thought he was some older grumpy guy, but this was a nice spin on things for me. |
