In 1981, the arcade game known as Frogger was released to the public, and became an instant classic. It was so popular that ports of the game were made for different video game consoles, including the Atari 2600. How was this port compared to the god awful Pac-Man game released for the Atari 2600? I'll tell you by making this review.
Graphics: 9/10 Compared to most other Atari 2600 games, Frogger's got some of the best visuals you'll see for a game on that system. Frogger, the vehicles, the logs and crocodiles all look very impressive for a game on the Atari 2600. The colors are spot on as well. The only thing I wish is that the turtles didn't look like a bunch of circles. Other than that though, Frogger's graphics are good enough for me to give this category a 9.
Sound: 8/10 Frogger has great sound effects and music for an Atari 2600 game. The main theme that plays before you start the game is very catchy, and the sound effects are also impressive for a game on the Atari 2600. There are better soundtracks out there, but the music and sound effects in this game are good enough for me to give the sound an 8.
Addictiveness: 9/10 This game possesses a great amount of replayability, which is why it was so popular in the arcades. Your objective is to have Frogger hop his way through oncoming traffic, then make his way across a river by hopping on logs, and at times turtles, and crocodiles. You must make it each of the 5 empty spots at the end of the stage in order to complete the level. Once you complete it, you move on to the next level, which is more difficult than the last. While the premise is pretty simple, the gameplay is still extremely addicting, which is why it was so popular in the arcades. Overall, Frogger for the Atari 2600's addictiveness is worthy of a 9.
Story: N/A Frogger doesn't have a story, therefore I'm leaving this category blank.
Depth: 5/10 The only content Frogger has is the same level being repeated, with each time being tougher than the last. There's plenty of levels to get through, so there's a decent amount of content to keep players happy even when they've mastered the game. While there are games with far more content out there, there's enough here for me to give the depth a 5.
Difficulty: 9/10 Frogger for the Atari 2600 is one of the harder games you'll find on that system. As you keep beating levels, the cars move faster, the logs will move much faster, and crocodiles will start showing up. You must time your jumps perfectly or else you'll lose a life. The toughness this game possesses is mainly the timing of your jumps, which require a good amount of strategy before you take off and try to get one one of the empty spaces. Overall, Frogger's difficulty is great enough for me to give the difficulty a 9.
Overall Score: 8.5/10 Frogger for the Atari 2600 may not be what the arcade version is, but it's still a great port nevertheless, unlike Pac-Man for the same system. Frogger's got great graphics, plenty of toughness, and good music and sound effects. Overall, Frogger for the Atari 2600 is worth playing, though the arcade version is superior. For these reasons, i'm giving the overall score for Frogger an 8.5 out of 10. In 1981, the arcade game known as Frogger was released to the public, and became an instant classic.
