http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/18/us/portrait-of-a-woman-to-share-space-on-the-dollar-10-bill-with-hamiltons.html

This was announced a while ago, but it's still rather important. In 2020 the U.S. will introduce a new $10 bill, which will feature a portrait of an (unknown) woman alongside Alexander Hamilton.

Many on the right think the move is unwise, that it's a breach upon tradition and a PR move by Obama. On the other hand, many (like myself) think it's an important benchmark in woman's awareness and should be supported.

What's your opinion on the matter?

Good stuff, I'd say. Women have shaped the history of each nation (the U.S. among them) immensely. Tradition is overrated anyways, and in any case, it's not like Obama has another chance for re-election, his gains from getting PR are marginal at best.

Also, mind you, my country already has a woman on a bill and nothing has caught on fire. This is Policarpa Salavarrieta, a seamstress that served as a spy for the revolutionaries during the Independence War of Colombia. I'm sure there are several women like her in the U.S. that could make it to the bill.

Colombian 10,000 Peso note

As a side note, this $10,000 Peso bill is worth about $3.87 U.S. Dollars, yay inflation!

I have mixed feelings. One, they will still have Hamilton on it. I have nothing against Hamilton or anything, but it is kind of a half gesture to do this but still keep a man on that same bill. The ONLY bill in US currency to have a woman on it still has a man on it.
Second, this kind of came way too late. As we are getting further into using debit/credit cards and other digital forms of currency, paper money is becoming phased out. More and more people typically don't carry cash on themselves (adults, as most kids don't have debit/credit cards). I feel that paper money is not going to be a main form of currency for much longer. Very possibly within the next 20 years. So it kind of sucks that a woman gets on the bill right when paper money is becoming the minute form of currency.

Well, really. No offence to the females out there. I personally think it's a bad idea to see a change in the $10 bill, the reason why I think it's bad.

Well, look at it, Alexander Hamilton is the first Treasurer of the United States and one of the 4 people that are on currency that were the founding fathers (the others are Washington on the $1, Jefferson on the $2, and Franklin on the $100), and I think it should stay like that. Ok, I know women did a whole lot of stuff to make a lot of history in the past, especially the women movement in the 1900's-20's and the whole civil movement in the 1950's-60's, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be featured in dollar bills though, because the ones currently on there did a whole lot for the United States, and if it wasn't for them, the United States wouldn't of exist, that is more worth than trying to have your gender to vote and have equal rights, 2 totally different things.

You also got a whole lot of people that are pro-Hamilton that are conservative and all think that changing to women is an extremely bad idea, because like I said above, Hamilton did a whole lot for the whole country, created one of the most dominated money system, the US dollar, and removing him is like removing the US Constitution from existence.

Well, women already have their face on currency anyways, Susan B. Anthony already got her face on a dollar coin in 1979, 1980, 1981, & 1999 and Sacagawea got her face on the current dollar coin to go along with the presidential dollars. I don't think the department of the treasury should change the $10 bill to feature a female person to be honest.

I do fully agree with what rcarter said, by 2020, cash money will more likely be obsolete because a whole lot more people are using credit/debt cards than cash, the only people that will really use it is for parents to give their kids money to spend and places that are "cash-only places" like stands at festivals and stuff like that.

As for women on cash bills.... bad idea.

I have two very different opinions on this, which makes me a bit torn.

I'm glad, very glad that woman are getting the attention and recognition they deserve, at the same time I think that changing the entire 10$ bill would cause some problems and misunderstandings at least, and a bit irrelevant when cash-money is becoming irrelevant in itself.

But overall, I'm really glad about that, women actually being seen for the impact they made in history.

As a descendant of Hamilton, I'm glad he's staying on the bill too, lol. Now I can still refer to it when people ask how to spell my last name.

Honestly, I really see no reason to change to $10 bill. Alexander Hamilton has been on the $10 bill for nearly 90 years, why change it now?

Secondly, credit cards and digital forms of payment are slowly rendering paper money obsolete, so this change just seems unnecessary and irrelevant. I'm not against women getting more recognition by any means, but it just seems pointless to make this sort of change by 2020 when paper money will more than likely be a thing of the past. Overall, I just don't approve of the whole idea.

I don't understand what the fuss is all about. Federal Reserve notes are merely glorified monopoly money with no instrinsinct value but the faith its users put in the credit of the US. And quite honestly, it looks rather bleak...

That being said, rather than make a big debate about it the US should look up to Canada. While the front of the bills has the same prime minister/monarch (with a few design differences) the backs of the bills change every few years to represent grand Canadian things: landscapes, birds, historical events, famous quotes, etc.

I don't really live in the US but even if I did I don't think I'd really care. We have women on two of our bills here in Sweden, and i haven't really seen anyone who has ever really even thought about it.

Seems kind of obsolete considering how as previous users on here has said, since things like credit cards are being used more and more in place of paper currency.

Zlinqx : I actually never thought about modern forms of currency... But yes, with even crypto currencies around, paper is likely to become a thing of the past. We can therefore honor other people (if need be) elsewhere

I don't see why we need to change any form of dollar bills to a different person. I don't see why this idea even exists. If they were to create an entirely new bill like say a $200 bill then I'd say this is a good idea, but on a bill that already has someone on it, I'm not for that.

I'm honestly not really sure how to respond to this.. Mainly because it would be great to have a woman on American Currency and it would give a nod to the Women that have shaped America to be what it is today.. But I feel that if they want to celebrate Women in History there might be better alternatives.

I mean I can't really say much about the social impact as everyone of our notes has the queen on it lol... but I feel that history is changing.. The reason why a lot of men are featured in history more than women is because men were considered more important centuries ago... Culture is changing and perhaps we should look at People who have changed the world in more recent times. Than sticking to tradition and celebrating a minuscule number of people whilst ignoring the rest.

Like rcarter2 said though I really do think this is too little, too late.. It won't have half the impact it would of done about 20 years ago..

As for a publicity stunt.. It's kinda redundant to think so.. The world is changing and people need to accept that. It's not like Barrack Obama will be remembered as "The man that put women on money" is it.. Though you never know

Txgangsta : Yes, I remember the coin that pretty much nobody used, and they weren't particularly common to see because they weren't produced in much abundance like the other practical coins. She was put on pretty much one of the most impractical coin. A $1 coin when there was already a $1 paper bill. People will prefer the form that it is easier to carry in a wallet. Really, that coin was more of a novelty thing than serious currency, much like the Susan B. Anthony coin, so I am not really sure as to what your point is.

I think that this is a great idea. There have been a bunch of women in US history that deserve recognition in this manner. Besides, the US has made very minimal changes to their currency in the past 100+ years, so I feel a change to something fresh would be nice.

The most important thing is that some government workers will have plenty of work to do. The media will have plenty of meaningless fluff to fill airtime and 'news' articles. People will make fortunes off of this. The taxpayers will foot the bill of course. But as long as it makes us feel warm and fuzzy inside who cares? Meanwhile we neglect a million things wrong with America that truly deserve attention. And I'm not talking about global warming. If they want to change it, just do it and be done with it. Put Sacagawea on it and make everyone happy. She was as brave as anyone.
