Super Mario Bros. 1.5?
Today I'll be reviewing Super Mario Bros. Extended - Version A. I, personally, like to call it Super Mario Bros. 1.5. This is also my first review on Vizzed, so... be nice!
First off, I'll talk about what happened to me right off the bat.
The game starts. The title is pretty nice, even though it's plain text. All of the sprites are reworked (they look like they came out of Super Mario Bros. 3, but they're still fresh), but other than that it's pretty much plain old Super Mario Bros. so far. You can choose to play as Mario or Luigi, which is a great substitution for the boring alternating two-player mode. Mario is Mario, and Luigi has his Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) physics. So he's slippery and can jump slightly higher. I chose Luigi, because I always chose him in Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan).
When the first level starts, you'll notice that the music is... well, different right off the bat. It's basically the same song, but it has weird pitches. I don't necessarily like it, but I guess it'll grow on me. I play the game like normal, and when I got to the invisible 1-UP block, it's a poison mushroom . I didn't expect that, but whatever. The rest of the level is pretty much normal, with a few swapped blocks. I overshoot the flagpole, because I'm Luigi. I enter World 1-2, and notice that the music is still changed. Oh well. I grab a Fire Flower, and continue the level as normal. The warp zone is unchanged, so I went to World 1-3. From what I can tell, it's the same, but with Bullet Bills being fired out of nowhere, but whatever. It's still pretty easy, though I did die once. After that, I go through World 1-4 with no problems. This is as far as I'll go with my personal experience, because I'm starting to ramble on.
Review!
Graphics: 9
Okay, maybe I'm a sucker for NES graphics, but this is a big step up from Super Mario Bros. A lot of the graphics look like they got ripped from Super Mario Bros. 3, but I don't think they were. I don't think I'll get tired of the graphics in this game any time soon. Other than that, I don't have much to say in this category. Sorry.
Sound: 6
As I said before, I don't really like the music in this game. As far as I can tell, though, the sound effects are unchanged. It's par for the NES in my book.
Addictiveness: 5
I wouldn't call this game "addictive." Sure, it's fun as heck, but not addictive. I will definitely come back to it sometime, but it's a platformer. By nature, it wouldn't be addictive like an RPG, so I didn't rate this really low.
Story: 3
The story, from what I gather, is the same as Super Mario Bros.' As the North American Super Mario Bros. manual states, "One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom People were turned into mere stones, bricks and even field horse-hair plants, and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin.
The only one who can undo the magic spell on the Mushroom People and return them to their normal selves is the Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is presently in the hands of the great Koopa turtle king.
Mario, the hero of the story hears about the Mushroom People’s plight and sets out on a quest to free the Mushroom Princess from the evil Koopa and restore the fallen kingdom of the Mushroom People.
You are Mario! It’s up to you to save the Mushroom People from the black magic of the Koopa!"
That's not the best description of it, but whatever.
Depth: 5 This game is basically the same as Super Mario Bros. in terms of depth, but it is a bit longer so I gave it a 5. It has 13 worlds, but the original had 8.
Difficulty: 9 This game is very hard, but it's not as hard as, say, Rockman No Constancy, so I gave it a 9.
Overall: 8.2
