I always thought speedrunning seemed really difficult, but I've gone through the original Resident Evil two or three times to get the infinite rocket launcher, and it's actually pretty fun. I could never do a world record though. What are your thoughts? Do you like to learn to speedrun games after you've played them? On games you play a lot or ones that have high replayability? Or have you never tried to speedrun anything in your life?

WoitDog : Well the games I play just aren't fun if you speed through them. I play Pokémon primarily. I watched my brother complete(so he says) Pokémon Blue in just 24 hours play time. Wow bro! I guess you'd just rather be finished quickly so you can do other things. He finishes prematurely.

Me, I'd rather keep playing than finish prematurely. I have so much more prolonged fun if I continue the game. Speed runs are not for me.

Ah those were the days I remember speedrunning Metroid Zero Mission on my GBA SP I was so good at that game that my record on that game is 89% items collected and beat the game in 59 minutes and 59 seconds just under an hour not to mention I was on hard mode so that must be impressive.

18mlivingston :   So did you have more fun in that hour of play? Or more fun bragging about it?

I've always been curious about that.

I don't do speedruns where I try to complete a game (except for short games like Donkey Kong, or some Flash games), but I prefer to try to do a speedrun of a particular level in a game. That is because I don't feel like I have enough skills to do an entire game. However, I would like to learn to speedrun games entirely, though.

I love the concept of speedruns. Most speedrunners do awesome in-game tricks while they do their speedrun, and that's exactly why I always enjoy watching speedruns.

I've never actually done a speedrun before, I've considered doing it in the past, but I just never got around to doing it. I play pokemon primarily, but I don't think I would enjoy the game nearly as much if I just rushed through it. I like investing time into training my pokemon and  preparing for gyms and battles, and I just don't think I would be as prepared if I had to speedrun through it. I'd consider maybe doing a sonic speedrun (gotta go fast) or perhaps metroid if I'm feeling up to it. I'd have to consider it though.

I started a speedrun once with an older pc game called Alex Gordon. It's a simple side scrolling platformer, and mostly meant for kids I think, but it's an awesome game.

I say I "started" because I was only counting in-level time (no loading screens, etc.) and didn't intend to do it all in one sitting. Eventually I got sidetracked, but I keep meaning to start it up again. It really is fun to speedrun a game because it gives you a new challenge in a game that you've probably beaten a few times already. Plus it tests your skills, which is always a plus for me, especially when a game is really fun but a little too easy...like Alex Gordon was after my third or fourth (or tenth) playthrough.

The odd time if I'm bored, I'll do a speed run of the Mario Bros. or something, but no, I don't generally do them. If I really like a game and replay it a lot I want to savour it, not rush through it.

I agree with what Fishergirl just said. If I'm playing games, especially ones that I really like, then I may play that game again because I liked it so much. I don't like to play games just to go through and beat it in the fastest possible time.

However, the only time I will actually "speedrun" a game, is if its turned into a competition like every month on Vizzed. If I rush through a game and beat it easily, I'll probably be immediately bored and/or disappointed with it, and try to sell it or just not play it anymore. I believe games should be enjoyed as much as possible by the person playing it. In my opinion, its impossible to enjoy a game if you're just blowing right through it.

I don't do speedruns, only if the game required that, for example: resident evil saga, for infinite ammo, more weapon or something like that or PARASITE EVE 2!!!! One game I passed 13 or more times in my ps2 xD, but only 5 times play ''normal'' game, then... I'm bored the game and need to complete more fast for the other rewards and then, speedrun it, but only for new items and cosmetics...

I prefer to play a game more time and complete 100% with secrets, secondary missions and all of the stuff instead of complete fast and now what? Play ''the same game'' for see other missions or secrets? You bored the game when you see the same scenarios.

This is my opinion, only speedrun if the game required that, but only, if you complete first the game!!! xD

I used to speedrun the GTA Series, ie. Vice City and San Andreas. There are a few people who still do it like, for example, Tirean and Joshimuz who do San Andreas and many other games.
Speedrunning can be both fun and irritating. It takes a lot of patience and skill in some ways to speedrun.

I was very interested in speedrunning for a while but I couldn't find a game to speedrun myself. I played around a bit with both Donkey Kong 5 - The Journey of Over Time and Space (a pretty funny bootleg) and You Have to Win the Game (a free game on Steam) and I got pretty good but I just couldn't beat the people who really grinded out good times.

It was just recently that I started speedrunning for real. I was watching a stream on Twitch for a recently released game called Parallax and I was hooked as soon as a I spotted a bug in the game. I bought the game instantly and started playing around with that bug and I ended up getting that streamer hooked on speedrunning the game as well. Together we started getting pretty good times and we even got in contact with the developer, who decided to patch out the bug but add a checkbox for us so we could re-enable it.

I ended up not beating the game completely before I started running it but just as crush_overider said you should absolutely make sure you beat a game before you speedrun it, because the speedrun might end ruining your normal experience of the game.

I find speeding running to be a bit difficult depending on the game. I actually want to speed run an entire Mario game some day, such as the original Super Mario or even Super Mario World, which is the game I am currently playing, although, I have realized that I would have to play the game for countless hours memorizing each world that will get me to the end the fastest. I could just watch someone else speed run the game, and I have, but I prefer to enjoy the game first then watch other people speed run the game.

Most of the games i play it is impossible 2 speed run on. However i have played games like kingdom hearts where i didn't watch any of the cutscenes and that reduced my time by i think 3 hours. On some games like donkey kong for the n64 i did speedrun on accident. I beat the game in about a 1 hour but that really isn't 2 impressive seeing as how short donkey kong is. I don't really see how you can speed run on the pokemon games because if you don't train your pokemon you can't beat the elite four and training your pokemon takes quite a while. I have beat the first max payne game in about 6 hours but i used god mode so i didn't have 2 worry about dying, I am not sure if that is considered fast enough 2 be a speed run tho and if it is fast enough i'm not sure if it would be counted because i used god mode.

It's really on how you play the game. Like for instance, if your playing a game for the first time, then it's a bad idea to do a speed run, but after you complete it a couple of times, then yeah.

As for me, I have done a couple of speed-runs with a few games, but most of the time, I normally take my time on Athens games I play, especially Sandbox and RPG games where I can just explore around.
