Well it has been 100 years today since the start of WWI when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. 9,000,000 soldiers lost their lives for this to happen again in 1939 which is the start of WWII. I'd like it if we all looked back at all the things that happened during this time. Many things have changed after WWI till the start of WWII because many countries changed, separated, or fell (Ottoman Empire). Also many new ways of war came in during this time: trenches, tanks, biological and chemical warfare, machine guns, flame throwers, planes, torpedoes, zeppelins, submarines, telephones, parachutes, and many more.

If anyone has a story to tell that your grandparents told you about the war I'd love to hear it.

Well, i made a thread simillar to this in General Chat, but i guess i'll give a story.

My great-great-grandad fought in the war, on the serbian front. He was present at the battle of kolubara and several other skirmishes. He lost a leg and and eye to artillery before he was captured and executed. The story was passed down the family.

In addition, his brother, my great-great-granduncle also fought in the war, but on the western front (immigrated to England a few years earlier). He was exposed to mustard gas, but survived. He fought in the battle of the somme, and recieved several honours.

Local Mods : Read my first sentence and see if this is cool.

Look at all of you history buffs! I can't say I knew what the dates of World War I were, but at least I knew the years about right. I actually know very little about any topic in history, but I think it'd be cool to talk to family members who were actually in wars like this one. Boxia, was your great-great uncle alive when you were younger and did you get to hear any stories from him directly? I doubt it, given what age he must have been if he was alive when you were a child, but I still thought it would be worth asking.

My husband and I were just talking this morning about the importance of knowing where you come from. I don't know anything about my ancestors so it's hard for me to fathom talking history with anyone. I don't even know if my grandparents told me any stories when I was younger, which makes me sad. I was too young to appreciate the sacrifice and meanings of their past. I hope that your family, Boxia (and any other family with relatives that fought in the war), pass such stories on for generations to come... but that more importantly, the the stories are valued.

Singelli :

My great-great-grandad was executed in 1916. I was born in 2000, so i unfortunately didn't get to talk to him. But i still have the pictures and the stories, and that's what really matters.

If you're talking about my great-great granduncle, he died in the blitz (1940).
