I am basically writing this thread because it's late, and I have gotten fed up with that the people who let nostalgia make decisions for them. I am sure all of you reading this thread have seen someone who likes a bad game, or refuses to like new games, all because of their nostalgic memories as a child. I wrote this thread after reminding myself about a conversation I had with a fellow Zelda "fan" when I asked him if he liked Wind Waker. He said:
"I don't play new Zelda games. Nothing will ever be as good as Ocarina of Time, so there is almost no point."
This, I swear to god, was part of an actual conversation, and you can bet I left soon after. I just want to try to enlighten people who have nostalgia as their number one priority when it comes to games you play or associate with. Take Pokémon for an example: I have played almost every Generation of the Pokémon games, (Gen III is the only exception) and I enjoyed every minute of every game I played. Then, I meet some person who played the original games as a kid, tries the newer games, and refuses to like them because they aren't Gen I or II. Simply because of Nostalgic memories, people are unable to like the newer Pokémon games, even though they have improved upon the original concept so much, and have so much more to offer than was possible in the first couple of Generations. I hear people complain about the newer Gen Pokémon being ugly, or uncreative. Personally, that is completely fine, but when people don't acknowledge that the earlier Gen's roster's having some crap in them, or defend the uncreative or useless Pokémon in question because it is part of the earlier games, then we have a problem.
Gen I: Gen II: Gen III: Gen IV: Every Generation has its ups and downs, but I get that it is part of personal preference. Believe me, I stopped the list above because I couldn't find a single Gen V Pokémon I truly don't like. I just want people to try to stay on the light side of Nostalgia, where you relive the memories of your past, and share with people your experiences as a kid, instead of potentially making enemies or such.
Now, by no means did I write this to offend people. Everyone has a free right to their own opinion, and I am not going to force them to think differently. I just wanted to share my thoughts, and see if people are willing to be more accepting of ideas.
