I always think games from the 1998 to 1999 have greater sense of nostalgia and storyline? also they were harder to play.

I have all collections of final fantasy and Resident evil. Resident evil 1, 2, 3 had always given me the creep, the zombies were more ugly and creepy where as Resident evil 4, 5, 6 the zombies were pathetic, their behavior were more human than zombies. Although I can't deny they have much better graphics ?the storyline bores me sometimes and also there isn't enough sense of fear while playing those games.

Final fantasy 7, 8, 9 were also much better than todays final fantasy with acception of Final fantasy 10.

yeah they were because, I didn't care about the graphics back then, I just cared about the action, beating the bad guys up.

I guess it depends on what you like; certainly games in the 90's made you think more about what you were doing to devise some sort of strategy, rather than just rushing in with guns blazing as some games seem to be. Come to think of it, those hidden object games seem to be all the rage for pc games these days, not much of a challenge intellectually, but it makes you pay attention.

I have metal Gear: 1 , 2 , 3 ,4 as well.?If I have to rate the game play than Metal gear 1 gets 9/10 and Metal gear 4 only like 6/10, overall I will give 8/10 to Metal gear 4 because of the graphics but the bosses were all females and there was so much cut-scenes with short game play. Metal gear 1 may had very awful graphic compared with todays although I didn't bothered too much noticed because I realized that was the best they could have done back in those days. Anyway the bosses from the FOXHOUND were so cool including that cyborg ninja even though he wasn't from Foxhound.

I still remembered how cool they were
Revolver Ocelot : expert with revolver
Psycho mantis: psychokinesis and physic powers
Sniper wolf: Deadly sniper women
Vulcan Raven: the shamanic cannon power
Decoy Octopus: Master of disguise
Liquid Snake: Twin of Solid Snake

Of course there was also the Gray wolf (Cyborg Ninja) who I originally he was from Foxhound ( I think he was once).

Not necessarily. In fact; video games are getting bigger and better. It's the feelings of nostalgia which makes us sometimes think that they just don't make 'em like that no more.

In my opinion yes they were better. The games in the 90's such as the Mega Man games, Donkey Kong Country series and even Mario games were so much better than stuff out there today in my opinion. To me the colors were better, you didn't have all these buttons that you have to push like you do now. I also feel like the games had more creativity behind them. So, today's games do not top the 1990's games especially the Mega Man Games, Donkey Kong games and Mario games. At the end of the 1990's the playstation had some great games too.

Well it depends on what type of game play do you want, I am down with most retro games from the 90s or below I mean back then story lines had way better quality, however it falls behind from progress as everything else does, new games are bound to have better graphics and new things. But many of the games nowadays can be very cliché (Most first person shooters like CoD) and that is why I like to go back to an old school RPG from time to time. Pokemon can't lie gets better in my opinion because of the supported online battles. If I want to kill time with a nice breathe taking storyline and game play I would choose the 90s games, however if I want to play with friends I'd rather have a game from today since they are more focused in multiplayer game modes.

Older games are more based on gameplay than graphics. Newer games are more based on graphics than gameplay.

Childhood nostalgia plays a huge role in this because we are so used to playing games when we were younger. However, technology is advancing more with graphics along with the younger group of people becoming more exposed to it. So if there were to be an argument involving between old school games and new games, one born in older times would prefer old school games while one born around now would prefer the new games in general.

The newer video games are becoming bigger as what OrdannonsX :says. Time along with technology are going by really fast. Not to mention that the prices of games and consoles will also increase.

It just all depends on the audience and what qualities that they see in a game.

Games from the 90's had to have a gripping storyline and slick controls. These factors made the games deep, and they were usually high quality gems to play. Some of the best games known to us come from this era. But today, things are different. Apparently, you can have the worst basis for a video game today, with repetitive story lines and very boring features. Just slap on some fancy graphics and your game will most likely sell. Don't get me wrong-there are great games today which don't fully rely on graphics, and have amazing story lines, but they are usually overshadowed by bigger game franchises like CoD or Battlefield.

But different people like different elements in games, and I'm ok with that.

No, they were worse in almost every way. Just saying that games are solely based on graphics in the modern era is also nonsensical. There are plenty of games with good gameplay today, and many games have improved over the years, in every conceivable way. As games are advancing into the future, they are also evolving. Problems with older games are being fixed, and developers are getting better at developing more advanced levels of gameplay. Just look at some of the newer games today. Parkour is made possible due to the new hardware of systems, flying around is more plausible, heck, racing is better. There are also games like Tales of Xillia where the standard combat system is much improved over that of Tales of Symphonia. There is just so much more that developers can do nowadays. To say that older games are better in general is off-base. They are generally purely for nostalgia. Now, not every modern game is better than games of old, but they certainly are better on average.

I don't think so. Sure, there are some nostalgia games back then and some of the great ideas were taken in the 90's but the games from now are very interesting in their own way. The games now may be bigger and more modern but if you just look story and addictive wise you won't see many changes.

Honestly, I would have to disagree. Almost all of the games I consider masterpieces were released 2000 - present. And, no, this isn't for graphical reasons or the fact that they are newer. A lot of these games had just so much depth and offered great gameplay, something that could have been achieved pre-2000's, but sadly I can't find a game pre-2000 that truly exceeds my expectations.

And, for the love of god, Final Fantasy 10 wasn't that good!

Not in any way. Games today are superior in every since, there is nothing old games have over new games, except for the feeling of nostalgia.

Games today have better graphics (People say they aren't important, but in reality they are. They don't make a perfect game, but makes even bad game a bit good just for them)

Better Story lines, better game play, better soundtracks, better player feedback, better everything.

Like said before, people say that newer games stand no chance over old ones, but it's only because of Nostalgia.

I will say that this is true for some games. To me, old games from the 99's had a lot more story, while today, more and more effort is put into the graphics than into the story, but that's just what I think. I remember there were games that were a lot of fun, but also took quite a long time to beat because there was so much to do.

I think I enjoyed games more then.  I was younger and had a laser focus so the difficulty was never a problem.  I was able to obsess over a game to a degree which I can't muster these days.
There were a lot of great games from the 90's but I don't know that it's fair to say they are better.  Just different.
