I just got an Atari Jaguar recently. The Jaguar is a console I have wanted for a very long time but never had the money to get it. I found this one on Craigslist with a controller and a game, I offered 50 bucks and he sold it to me. This is not a review, I don't have enough games or played enough of the Jaguar games to do a real review for the console. This is going to be more or less of an essay on why I enjoy the Atari Jaguar, why its a great console, and why people should consider finding a way to play this great console. Now, lets start with the way the thing looks!
The Atari Jaguar is a beautiful console. It is sleek, and back with vents on the sides like a nice sports car. It has a very futuristic and sexy design, I haven't seen a console this good looking since the model one Sega Genesis. The controller is also pretty neat. If you haven't seen it, it is a very unique looking controller. The top of the controller looks somewhat like a Genesis controller (or it does to me) and it has a big key pad at the bottom. The controller fits very nicely in the hand of its user, the only problem with the key pad is that it seems it was a little underutilized, it seems that most of the games don't use it as much as they could or at all. Overall this is a really cool looking beast and a killer controller.
Do the math! 64-bits!!!! The adds for this console was crazy. Do the math seemed to be Atari favorite line. Well I did the math and this console only gets a C. It is technically a 64-bit console and from what I understand runs on a bunch of 32-bit processors. If you think the Atari Jaguars games are going to look like your Nintendo 64 games then you are wrong. The Jaguars games looked some what like the 32-bit Sega 32x, but the graphics in most cases seem to be better on the Atari Jaguar. From what I understand it was so hard for programmers to make games for this console they couldn't tap into the full potential of the Jaguar, that doesn't mean the games looked bad because they didn't at all. The graphics are beautiful on a lot of the Jaguar games.
This console seems like a magnet for wacky games. All I need to do is name one and you will know what I mean, Attack of the Mutant Penguins, yeah that is one of the games for the Atari Jaguar. This console had a lot of great original games. Rayman was planned for the Jaguar as a matter of fact but ended up on the Playstation first for some reason. Some of these games worked and others was a flop but I find them all really interesting.
Is the Jaguar worth the money you will have to pay to get a collection going for it? That really depends, if you are into wacky, oddball consoles then yes, every single penny. I personally suggest it, I think it gets a bad rap for no reason. The Atari Jaguar is a really neat console and I love it. That is why I like the Atari Jaguar, please post your opinions of the console, I would love to know what you think.
