What was your first system? What was your first game(s)? Did you get your

first system and game(s) as a gift? A hand me down? Bought it

yourself?

This is how I got my start:

Back when everyone was obsessing over the new Nintendo

Entertainment System (NES), I found myself in the local Salvation Army

with my family. That was where I found an old Atari with three games. I

managed to beg an extra few dollars out of my Dad so I would have

enough to pay the $15 they were asking for the system. With it were

Breakout, Space Invaders, and Missile Command.

I was so excited

to have my very first video game system, that when I got home, I was

completely heartbroken when I found out that I was missing a cable

needed to attach it to the TV. I had to look at my new console, with

my three games in the corner of my room for more than a week before I

could afford the part I needed so I could finish hooking it up to play

it.

Of my new games, Missile Command was my favorite by far.

Over the next few weeks, I played the game so much that I had it down to

a science, sniping missiles almost as fast as they appeared on the

screen at times, . . . Good times! Oddly enough, I can hardly stand it

anymore, instead, Breakout has become my staple whenever the console

comes out.

I spent a lot of time playing that console over the next few months. Until I found
a NES under the Christmas tree.

It
wasn't until years later that I found a box of Atari games at a garage

sale and I had an excuse to drag the old system back out. Every once in

a while, I still stumble across an old Atari game I don't have,

whenever that happens, I drag it back out for a few days again!

My first gaming system was the Atari. My parents  had an Atari so I learned how to play it. When I was about 2 maybe 3. My parents brought  me the Nintendo Entertainment System. It came with Super Mario Brothers, plus My parents also got me Super Mario Brothers 2 and Mega Man 2. I played Mega Man a lot thus that is how I got into Mega Man games.

My gaming addiction started when I was 3.When I was little (And even still today) I always followed what my uncles did,and one day I saw them playing the Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time, and I was so fascinated to see this fantasy world on a screen.I watched my uncles play it every day, asking questions and getting even more interested.1 year later and all of my uncles have played the game already, and it was finally my turn to play.My uncle Ryan taught me everything I needed to know and my video game addiction began,I sucked pretty bad but over the years I got far better. My parents noticed my new addiction and for my 5th birthday I got a Gamecube with the Legend of Zelda:Collector's edition bundle.Im not like the much older people who grew up with the dawn of video games or even the NES but I still love video games probably just as much.Even though it gets me made fun of by older users, that is the start of my video game journey.

shad0wtraverse :   Nothing wrong with the GameCube!  Its a good system.  And don't let older gamers give you grief about not getting your start with the NES or Atari.  We all fall in love with the systems of our childhood, no matter what that system may be at the time.

I think we all sucked at video games early on.  Even after all these years, I'm still not great at games, I play most of my games on the easier settings, and even then I struggle my way through many of them.

I've been a fan of the Zelda series from the early days.  Almost every game in the series is a great one!  I'm particularly fond of the ones from the various Gameboys.

GateKeeper_A : Yeah Gamecube is a great system, one of my favorites (but that could be a little biased since it was my first owned system).I don't really get grief about not being able to start with older consoles,if anything I'm glad about finding video games to begin with, but thanks for the encouragement.

I did play a little SNES with my friend, but we never fully played a game we were still in the barbie doll age.  But when we got a Playstation 1 we got a game called Xenogears and that started it for us!  We were glued to the Playstation RPG games.  I still love playing those games!

I wouldn't call it an "addiction" as it's more of a hobby for me. But to answer your question got "addicted" to video games when I got my first my ever gaming system of my own: the Gameboy Advance SP. I played Pokémon Fire Red every chance I got. Even though I started playing video games on the PC and SNES the GBSP really got me into video games. My favorite PC game from when I was just starting to explore the gaming kingdom was, and still is, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. I've played it so many times that I can run a 100% play through in about three hours.

My gaming addiction started way back when I was still a young one. I still am a young one, but I mean years before, like when I was 2 years old. I started playing a nes or Nintendo Entertainment System. Then from there on out, I started playing all types of old school games, Like Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game boy color, game boy advance, etc. Well from there on out I have been playing all sorts of games, and been enjoying my life, while people called me a game freak, but its not like I cared, I lived the way I wanted too and that's all that mattered .

Hey I like the question cause games actually helped me in life. I used to do a lot of drugs when I was a bit younger (hard drugs are really bad and should not be touched by anyone because they will wreck your life). That's here the games helped me a bunch. Games were the only thing that got my mind off drugs I would just play all day for two weeks after work and before I knew it I was off of the d*mn s***. I always played games but now I am kind of addicted to them. I

@ LCRain: Xenogears!  What an incredible game!  I know what you mean, when I first played it, it was almost impossible to pull myself away from it!  Its a real shame that the sequels never lived up to the first one  (At least in my opinion.)

@Chindogu:  I'm starting to think that a lot of people got their start with the Pokémon series.  I ha vent had a chance to invest any real time into the series yet, but it is on my to-do list for this summer.

You can make a perfect run of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in three hours?  Impressive!  I don't know that I've ever been that dedicated to a single game.  For me, many games only get played once, and even the ones I do play over and over again, I never achieve that kind of skill in them.  The closest for me are probably the games from the Fallout series (I've played all of them many times, but Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas have probably seen the most play in my home.)

@ animelover1:  That's great!  Its like the song says, "You cant please everyone, so you've got to please yourself." (Or something close to that.)  Its wonderful that playing games makes you happy, and that does NOT make you a freak!  It just makes you someone who loves games.

@Awesome-Kid:  Bath Beads?  Why?!?!?!?  Your poor, poor Nintendo!

Sonic Pinball?  I recently discovered that game through the Sega Collection for the Xbox 360.  It is very addictive inst it?  I ended up obsessing over it for the better part of a week, until my wife started playing it, . . . .

Mine was when I was 4 or 5 I was obsessed with Sonic the Hedgehog. Sega Cd had just come out and I loved it! I've always been good with video games it was passed down from my mother who has been a gamer most of her life so I suppose it would be her who started the addiction. My oldest brother helped too. I ventured on from there to play many games on many consoles with only a few sticking out to me over these years like Nintendo original Mario and super Nintendo Mortal Kombat 3 and N64's Mystical Ninja, Super Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina of Time, GBC Pokémon Red and PlayStation and one of my favorites Legend of Dragoon, Game Cube and its harvest moon and other awesome games Final Fantasy series on PlayStation and xbox these all together truly got me started and are the main ones I keep coming back to. I love video games they are a major part of my childhood.

@ Sdobbs88:

Legend of Dragoon.  Its been a long time since I played that one.  I remember being swept up in the adventure, loving every minute of it!  Once I finished it, I loaned it out, and it never came home again.  Excellent game!

Final Fantasy is among my favorite game series (Its a toss up between the Fallout series and the Final Fantasy series for favorite.)  Final Fantasy 1 - 6 are my favorites, from the series, but 7 and the Final Fantasy Legend series were almost as good.  I felt that Final Fantasy 8 was a little lacking, and then when they released the MMO, I quit following the series so closely (Limited Internet at times leave me a bit unfavorable towards games that I cant play alone.)  I've heard that some of the newer games in the series have been really good as well, but my OCD wont allow me to play the series out of order, . . .

It sounds like you had an involved and diverse gaming experience growing up!

@ hellno163:

commodore 64?  That's one system that I've never owned, . . . For that matter, I've rarely even had a chance to play one!

I always enjoyed the early Pitfall games.  I was never really good at them (I could beat them, but I struggled to do so.), but they were always fun.

I remember playing the Double Dragon games and the old Sampson's games.  The Double Dragon games were all pretty good, but the only Sampson's game that I REALLY liked was the Arcade version.  That said, some of the newer Sampson's games haven't been too bad!  I really enjoyed the Samurai Showdown series, I own all of them in one form or another.  I have to say that Samurai Showdown II was my favorite, I wasted a LOT of quarters in the arcade playing that one!

I got a PS1 and the Spyro The Dragon trilogy. I was never the same after that day. Then I got a Gameboy Advance SP and the heavens opened up.

My first console was a Nintendo 64.  I don't really remember when we got it because I was too little to remember but my parents played it.  I usually liked playing Mart Kart and I remember playing Mega Man 64 when I was about 6 or 7.  That's basically what got me hooked on Mega Man.  I got a GBA around 2003-2004 I think and I had some GBC games for it too.

taterii : Very nice!  My wife blames her gaming on Spyro as well!  She played it on my Playstation 1 back when we were dating.  She liked it so well that I used it as an excuse to buy her a Playstation 1 of her own along with the first Spyro game.  To this day, she claims that it was the beginning of me corrupting her, . . .

7eventh : My entire family has always been a big fan of the Mario Kart games.

That's probably the thing I love the most about the Gameboy Advance, it plays all the games for the original Gameboy and the Gameboy Color as well!  The system is great for trips, or for any time you are going to be out and about with nothing to do for an hour or two!  IMO, the Gameboy Advance is the best hand held system ever made, period.

GateKeeper_A : I agree with you 100%!  I remember being in the car with my GBA when we were going to go see family during the holidays.  The GBA never gets old.  I still play my handhelds in the car XD
