Well, hey guys. So today, I'm going to make another sonic sprite hack review. I know it's starting to get a bit repetitive but I usually like to review what I'm mostly interested in, though, I may try to start reviewing other non-sonic games sometime, maybe. So, I was browsing around the RGR, once again, and then I found this sonic hack, I played it for a while and I thought it was worthy enough to review and fairly interesting. Anyways, let's go ahead and start right on the review! Intro: Mighty? He is still there? That forgotten one? Well, yea. He is pretty much a forgotten Sonic character along with a few others. Though, to be honest, that is kind of sad since Mighty the Armadillo is fairly a pretty cool character with lots of potential for cool things in Sonic games. He may even be so forgotten that you may not even have any idea on who I am even talking about right now. From what I have heard before, he was kind of an idea for a main character instead of Sonic, but later on, they decided to change the main character to Sonic and re-use that concept of Mighty the Armadillo, elsewhere, which ended up being with the chaotix in knuckles' chaotix and Segasonic the hedgehog. Though, I am not 100% sure if what I'm saying is 100% correct, so don't fully depend on what I just said because I may be forgetting something about him. Well, hopefully I'm not mistaken. So, pretty much in this Sonic 1 sprite hack, the only modifications here is that Sonic, the original main character in the original Sonic the hedgehog 1 game, got Gameplay: 9 The gameplay is mostly similar to the original Sonic the hedgehog 1 in several ways, however, I have noticed some changes in the physics. Well, to explain it, a bit of a change that I have seen in the physics is that when you are to run, Mighty will just keep running faster, faster, and faster, unlike the original Sonic the Hedgehog 1 physics, when you run, you don't keep going faster and faster. What I mean is that if Mighty were to run in a straight line, he will slowly speed up and he will continue to speed up very fast as he is running, meanwhile, in the original Sonic 1 physics, Sonic will just keep running at a constant fair speed. Also, I think in this Sonic 1 sprite hack, Mighty can actually run down hills faster instead of going in a constant speed, even if going down hill like the original Sonic the Hedgehog 1 physics. Though, I will really have to say, it makes the game even more fun and better that way. I actually like the modified physics a bit more than the original. It's more fun to be able to feel a bit infinite in running at high speeds instead of being somewhat limited for running at a higher speed in Sonic games. I'll have to say that this is probably the 2nd time I see modified physics turn out pretty well (Sonic classic heroes was the first one), most of the other modified physics in Sonic hacks I have seen are just mostly messed up and not enjoyable, though, they do give me a good laugh when I see everything glitch out or become jumpy from it. Now, let's see, so, we covered one thing about the gameplay which was the physics, now, let's go ahead and talk about special abilities and what not. So, to explain that, Mighty the Armadillo doesn't really have that much special abilities really. He has all of Sonic basic abilities of jumping, running (obviously), and the spin dash. The spin dash in this Sonic 1 sprite hack is about the same like all the other original Sonic games I have seen. All you simply do is hold down and tap on the jump button to charge up your dash, then let go! You guys obviously know this. And now, Mighty does have his own unique ability taken from Knuckles chaotix, Well, only one ability in this Sonic 1 sprite hack (I think). Which is.... You guessed it, Wall jumping and Wall Climbing! Well, if you want me to be real honest here, it is mostly useless and boring in most cases, however, the move itself is pretty cool and it is useful in a very few cases. To do this wall jumping move, when you jump and hit into a wall, press the jump button again and Mighty will cling onto the wall in a very short amount of time, afterwards, press the jump button again and he will jump off the wall! Now, to actually climb walls with this technique, You need to actually hold up + (left or right! depending on if you are leaning on the wall from the left side or right side!) once you cling onto the wall and then keep on tapping the jump button and you will notice and you are jumping up the wall. I must say, it is a pretty awesome technique. It is about of similar use to knuckles' and Vector's wall climbing ability except Mighty jumps up the wall, A LOT faster! Now, let's talk about one real case that it is very useful and definitely cheap in! If you sonic fans heard the word, "cheap", you may be able to guess what I was talking about, possibly. Which is.... Wall jumping in Marble zone! (All 3 acts!) Some of you Sonic fans who played lots of Sonic hacks can probably guess this one! Normally at the beginning of each act, there will be a nice and gigantic flat wall as you run. Once you encounter that wall, what you can do is to cling onto the wall, and start having fun using Mighty's ability of jumping up walls! Simply jump onto that big wall, then hold up + right and keep pressing the jump button, in no time, you'll be on top of the wall! Now, simply run through the wall, and KA BOOM, you are either done with the act or you finished more than half of the act. (Depends if you are on act 1, 2, or 3) If you finished more than half of the act instead off of this cheating method, you will encounter another big wall, Also just climb that too with Mighty's Jumping wall technique and you should be done with the act. A very cheap and cool method I must say. That is only one of the useful things about Mighty's wall jumping technique. And now, to talk about the small remaining things of the gameplay, Mighty's jumping height is about the same as Sonic's jump height, Mighty's speed is about the same as Sonic's speed, however, he may sometimes appear to run faster than Sonic in this original game due to the slightly modified physics. Really, thats about it for the gameplay, which is usually a significant part of Sonic games. Graphics: 8 Well, I'll say this, it is not bad, not bad at all. To explain it, what is basically modified in this Sonic 1 sprite hack is the Sonic sprites are all modified and change to some Mighty the Armadillo sprites, including a change in the title screen, and a few small color palette changes. Now, let's go ahead and start off with talking about the few changes in graphics for this Sonic 1 sprite hack since that is what you guys are probably most interested in. So, let's start off with the title screen. So, in the title screen, Sonic was Sound: 9 Now, as for the sound, it is of course as you can guess, unchanged from the original Sonic the Hedgehog 1. Though, the purpose of this hack was to probably play as Mighty the Armadillo with his moves and improved physics. To be honest, usually, most Sonic hacks would actually mess up the background music. Like the background music is just too intense or unfitting, but, in this Sonic 1 sprite hack, that is all unchanged, the sound effects is also unchanged. I actually like the original Sonic music the best though, it is the most fitting, most catchy, and of high quality for a Sega Genesis. The same goes for sound effects in this case. I really don't know what else to say. Addictiveness: 7 I would definitely say that this game is fairly addictive. Especially due to it's awesome modifications in physics allowing players to move at a real max speed instead of some boring constant speed and Mighty's wall jumping ability is pretty fun to play around with at times. Though, to be honest, there are better sonic hacks out there to be even more addicting, but this is not too bad. That is all I basically need to say here. Story: 6 Ehhh... Of course. The same old, boring, and extremely simple story. Dr. Eggman, once again, has evil plans, will Depth: 8 Well, this game got a decent amount of depth. Sadly, I kinda already covered that in the previous sections. What I can say is that it offers all of the original zones from the original Sonic the hedgehog 1, and Mighty the Armadillo with modified sprites, Sonic's basic abilities and the wall jump from Knuckles chaotix. Nothing much to say. Difficulty: 7 Ehh... I would probably rate it the same as original, since all of the zones, after all, are original, and Mighty doesn't really have any significant moves to makes things easier for him, other than cheating and skipping over marble zone with this wall jump technique. It mostly depends on the zone for difficulty, some zones, like green hill zone, is a piece of cake, other zones, like labyrinth zone, is very hard and painful. OVERALL: 9 Well, that is about it of my review guys! I hope you all enjoyed reading this review and any feedback appreciated. Have a nice day on vizzed! Intro: Mighty? He is still there? mohammedroxx3 : unnnmm I'm kind of torn between this review because I like from the intro and half-way through the graphics segment but to be honest since this does affect my job as well. The gameplay segment seem to be more fleshed out for a large word count (898 words?) I think if you had skimmed that down and added some parts from it into the addictiveness segment/depth segment then it may have been better. I don't want it to seem like I disliked this review completely but I do think it required a bit more time and look over, I'd have to say it'd be a 3 out of 5 for scoring, not saying this to discourage you or anything I just don't want to see your creative material become overlooked by many users. Keep writing these review and take lessons from each of them on what is good and bad alright! |

sonicthehedgehog57 : ohh... I see what you mean. I kinda overdid the gameplay and graphics portions in my review... I guess. It's because the graphics and gameplay is what have the most changes and it's what I'm mostly interested in... though, I will try my best to distribute the detail among the other categories next time. Thanks for the advice. |

Nice job buddy. I really think you did a good job with this review. The only negative thing I can say about it is that it was a little longer than it needed to be. Still a great review, though. |
