iN008 : That is kind of a double edged sword. I'm not saying that there are teachers who wouldn't use that method regardless of the standards. But in general, I would say it usually isn't completely the teacher's fault. I have never personally met one who likes that method or prefers to use that method. The problem is that the ones who make the standards for core classes are those who have been out of the teaching field for so long that they seem out of touch with what works and doesn't work in a classroom. They pile on standard after standard in the classes without taking into consideration that there is only so much you can effectively teach in the amount of time you have each student. They just pile it on as if time were an unlimited thing. Core class teachers like math and science are then left with two options. Effectively teach topics in the depth that they need to be taught to really understand, causing not all standards to be met due to not having time to get to them, resulting in eventually losing your job. Or you can teach to the test just so you can get those standards hit so you can keep your job, but at the cost of not being able to teach them as in depth as then need to be taught. It is a ridiculous situation that teachers are put in now. In all honesty, it is not a good time to be a teacher at this moment. Not saying I don't love what I do. But it really is not a good time right now as the ones highest up on the education board are throwing us fantasy and expecting it to just work out perfectly.

Sword legion : Well, 'troll' is more of an online term. It is different in real life. You don't typically find someone troll in real life like online, so I can't really answer the question about debate trolls in a classroom. Especially on the aspect of exposing them. It is in the classroom. Nothing to exactly expose. 

As for dealing with people who want to debate, the classroom is not the setting for that. I don't teach a debate class. So if someone wants to debate my expertise over my teaching fields, they are free to do so on their own time outside of class time. But I don't allow debate over my content area during class.

Sword legion : Depends on how into martial arts you are. Some of my students who make it to black belt or higher practice rigorously outside of class, but this is quite rare. Many of the techniques we show are designed to be effective as long as one has the basic strength required to not throw their arms out. Normally, I end up emphasizing flexibility rather than actual strength, and as such exercises that focus on stretching my legs, arms, and torso are the main part of instruction. Strength is important as well, but we teach individuals anywhere between the ages of four and seventy. With all the genetic and medical restrictions there, we focus on technique and flexibility instead of actual strength.

I know I answered your questions backwards, but I would honestly recommend at least a basic understanding of how to defend yourself. Personally, I have never had to use any of the skills I've learned, but I know some of my fellow instructors have, both male and female. The instances of where self defense is needed are few and far between, but when you need them, if you have some base, it can prove to be a game changer in those situations.

Singelli : Was it hard for you to get your degrees in teaching? Were you able to start teaching before you had most of your degrees or qualifications. The reason I ask is because I had a teacher once who came in and didn't teach correctly and wouldn't get her degrees done but eventually got let go because she wouldn't finish them and just simply wasn't a good teacher. I want to know if you or somebody you know went in before qualifications were done or you had finished your classes and actually did what you were suppose to do and finished them. I think about being a teacher one day but I haven't decided.

iN008 : I really can't answer more efficiently than rcarter2 already did.  I mean, there's a lot of material to cover in a short amount of time. I know it sucks, but if we don't cover the material at least briefly, you'll be further behind the next year, and trying to learn will be even more detrimental.

Just wait until you get to college. I had many college professors that would cover a full chapter.... to three chapters.... all in one lecture. High school really isn't all that bad, I promise.  lol

Someone70 :  I actually do hop on vizzed between classes and on my free period. XD So does rcarter2, because despite being in different states, we actually have similar free periods, and lunches.  Sometimes we chat about our day during our breaks. It's pretty fun. XD

As for tests or projects... that's a rather difficult question for me to answer personally. I think that projects are more akin to real life, but many colleges put an emphasis on testing, too.  Then again, our kids are NOT being taught how to do projects properly. To most students, completing a project means plagiarizing a lot of material, then putting glitter on it to make it -look- nice. To them, a project is more about appearance than content.... and this is a difficult battle for me to fight, though I've tried.

As for weighted grades... I'm honestly not a fan.  Luckily, in my school each teacher is allowed to run their grades however they wish, so I just do a purely number crunched average.  Total number of points you earned, divided by the number of points possible. While it's true that I make tests worth more points, I feel like this has always given me the most accurate measurement of knowledge, and it allows a students to make mistakes in various areas, no matter their strengths or weaknesses.  For example, students who are horrible test takers can still pass my class with a B so long as they do everything I ask them to do, and perform strongly on most other assignments.

I found school (even college) to be pretty boring, and I rushed through my degrees just so I could teach.  I did start teaching before I got my actual teaching certificate, but that's because I worked under a special program which allowed for it, but required I get my certificate and master's degree in three years while I taught.  I know many schools and colleges do this.

I'm sure there are some schools that hire without teachers having met the requirements yet simply because teaching is not always an easy job to fill.  Especially considering how little responsibility kids have and how lazy many adults are becoming... it's definitely difficult in some places.

I don't THINK I'm a bad teacher... most students say I'm their favorite teacher, and that they've learned more from me than any other teacher.  I'm not lenient or anything, so I know they're not liking me because I give them grades like candy.

Sorry I just got to this, yes I would love to be a part of it... newbie teacher that I am (secondary social studies is the subject by the way)

Mistress : Well, so far what I have done is promote an environment of mutual respect. When I observe a student bullying I call them out on it and ask why they would disrespect someone else in that manner. It worked really well in the junior high school that I was teaching at because of their anti-bullying program that did the same thing. I also try to give some kind of positive feedback to the bullied child to help redirect their feelings and focus on the positive.

I will stop talking, cross my arms, and give the class the "I'm waiting" look or just examine my nails. Usually they gets them to quiet down pretty fast because the entire class turns to stare at or shush the ones talking.

Well, I haven't had much experience yet since I just got certified, but for observations, field, and student teaching, I have been in five schools and three districts.    To be honest, whenever I give a teacher a rough time or when I notice other students acting rude to a teacher, I feel bad. The teacher tries to do everything for his or her own pupils and it is not fair to negatively treat someone who is trying to teach you new things everyday. I am sure it feels frustrating to deal with all of the paperwork and the bad students. I have questions for you all. How does it feel when you must shout at another pupil and assign detention for themselves? Do you believe bad students are good inside and have potential? Do you think students are trying to act rude or do you think there is always a reason behind it? Your jobs are extremely beneficial to children and you must all be recognized for what you do. Good luck teaching to you all!
