After 3 successful Mario titles on the NES, Nintendo decided to make a new system called the gameboy, This is a handheld system, so that means you can bring it anywhere you please, And this means what we need a true definitive Mario title for the handheld, and what we got is probably one of the best Mario titles in a while! This is Super Mario land for the gameboy.
Story-7/10 The main story behind this game is that once again our favorite plumber Mario has to save the princess, but this time He has to actually save a different one! This time around he is saving Princess daisy from the evil alien tatanga, Yeah, I guess peach had a vacation or something, But anyways It is now up to Mario to save her and make sure everything goes as fine and dandy as candy.
Gameplay-8/10 Super Mario land plays like your typical Mario title, you control Mario through Big levels as you defeat enemies, collect coins, and get through the level in one piece. Enemies in the game include Goombas, koopas, piranhas, etc. Mario can defeat all of these enemies easily without trouble, but this is where the kicker comes in, You see There are some certain powers that Mario will have to use in his journey, such as mushrooms which will let him grow stronger and gain an extra hit point, or a fire flower which will let him shoot these fiery projectiles from his hand. At the end of some worlds you will have to take down a boss, these guys are much stronger and will take alot of more strategy to defeat. And of course Mario is not going to have to save the world only on foot! In some certain levels you will have to use a submarine, an airplane, etc. Anyways that is it for the gameplay.
Graphics-8/10 This game was practically a launch title for the gameboy, and for what it is worth, It's looked awesome back then, and It still looks awesome today! I know the gameboy wasn't the most powerful system around back then, But at least It had some pretty slick looking games, and This is one of them! All of the worlds you will be exploring look very nice, polished, and just overall a blast to explore. As for the characters and sprites, they look pretty good as well, Mario looks good, the enemies look good, and so on.
Sound-8/10 Another good part of the game, the soundtrack, the soundtrack in this game is probably the best I have heard in a Mario game! All of the songs in the game seem to fit the mood of the respective level very nicely, Such as the first level, the plane levels, etc. As for the sound effects, they are OK as well, You get your basic beeps, bloops, booms, etc. My personal favorite song in this game is the song whenever you complete a level.
Addictiveness-7/10 Is this a game that I am going to play again? Yeah sure, why not? The game does have It's moments at alot of times, and That is exactly what you would expect from a Mario game like this, You expect charm, appealing characters, big wacky levels, etc. I remember when I first got this game I couldn't put It down, Until I got a less then stellar game for the gameboy, That is for me to know and you to find out. But at least this game had more appealing value then that "Other" Game!
Depth-6/10 The game is pretty long for a Mario title! There are over 6-7 worlds in the game in total, all lasting about 5 levels each, with some bosses, so the game will probably take you about 2 hours to get through the whole game. But oh well! Least the game has some replay value to It! Which is always a plus especially since This is Mario.
Difficulty-6/10 If you are an expert gamer like me, then this game shouldn't give you much trouble, But if you are a novice gamer, then the game will give you a really hard time in the later levels! I remember getting my butt whooped in those submarine levels, darn screen won't stop scrolling so fast! But the game shouldn't give you trouble besides that.
Overall-8.4/10 Mario's first adventure on the handhelds was definitely a hit! The game feels exactly like the past Mario titles, Let's just hope we get the new title Super Mario 3D world soon, But anyways, I gave this game a 8.4 because how much fun It is and how much It offers for a handheld title, Anyways this has been RedHotToddy, and I am signing off!
