Looks like we're looking at one of the most iconic video game series' to date. And one of the most hardest at that. You guessed it! It's Mega Man! A franchise I respect for a huge amount of reasons. The epic stages, the awesome soundtrack, the emotional characters and even it's ability to make it's story progress with each game and allow itself to make SENSE. Yeah that's right I'm looking at you Zelda. But we aren't here to talk about other franchises here no. We're here to talk about the Blue Bombing rainbow color robot we know as Mega Man. Now let's begin.

Plot: Back then who gave a care in the world about plot? Not many people unless you watched a lot of deep movies. Like Mario or even Sonic for that matter, the plot of Mega Man wasn't to complicated. It wasn't nearly as unoriginal as Mario's stories are, or anywhere near as complicated as Zelda, but it is still a game that can tell compelling stories. So here is where it all starts out.

2 scientific geniuses, Dr. Thomas Light and Dr. Albert Wily (notice a pattern here) have discovered the creation of industrial working robots with the addition of Rock and Roll. However Dr. Light is the only one who receives credit for these amazing robots. So Dr. Wily devises a plan. A plan to steal all 6 of their robots, Gutsman, Cutman, Elecman, Bombman, Fireman, and Iceman, in order to take over the world. Now Rock, wanting everlasting peace for both Humans and Robots alike, wants Dr. Light into a super fighting robot. Understanding his feelings for the world, the doctor transforms him into the super fighting robot were all know today as Mega Man. Thus results in the destruction of the industrial robots and the foiling of Dr. Wily's evil schemes.

Game Play: We all know how side scrollers can be. But how does Mega Man affair? Well to most people, Mega Man is the King, yes I said it, the KING of the sidescrolling genre. Give mario a slap to the face because we a taking a whole new direction into the meaning of side scroll.

Unique to his franchise, (and metroid in a way) Mega Man has a different way of game play. It's all in the famous gun on his left hand known as the Mega Buster. The weapon that allows him to shoot tons of weapons from the robot masters. Weather it be a sharp pair of scissors or a Dark Void that sucks things up. Anything can have a free chance of being sent out of that deadly gun. However when he doesn't use robot master weapons? He shoots plasma when he hasn't any weapons to use to his disposal. And I must say, it works pretty fine compared to the other weapons. You can take down every, and I mean every robot master in the game. (as long as you know how to abuse their movements) Not that it makes it nearly as useful as the weapons you get. Now how about we list some of these powers and see what they are useful for?

Cut Man: A pair of scissors that can be used like a boomerang. However it is only useful for defeating Elecman.

Gutsman: This gives you the power to lift strong rocks and completely cream Cut Mam. (Necessary to get a special weapon. That is also necessary to beat the game...)

Elecman: A blast  of electricity that's is as powerful as a TANK. Most spend their time using this weapon against other enemies for it's the strongest weapon in the game. Also used to beat IceMan.

IceMan: A beam that freezes enemies in place no matter where they are. In the air or on the ground this thing will freeze it. Also used to beat
FireMan. (You know. Because screw logic. Am I right?)

Fireman: I must make a mote of this. Future installments in the series allow a charged shot. Mega Mans 1 - 3 do not do this. However, with FireMan's weapon you can preform a charged fire shot. It's the closest thing to a charging Mega Buster we will get in this game. (Well technically it is but you get the idea) This is also good for blowing up Bomb Man and igniting that switch.
Bomb Man: A bomb that can be thrown a medium sized range away from you. Blow up Guts Man if you have this weapon.

Magnet Beam: No audience. Don't start whining about how Magnet Man is in Mega Man 3. I understand that. But Magnet beam is something exclusive to Mega Man 1 OK? Now, Magnet Beam is something that if you hate backtracking, you're going to need GutsMan's power to obtain. Or Elecman's but like I said, backtracking. During Elecman's stage there are these rocks that you can pick up with GutsMan's power to obtain the magnet beam. Now this weapon is also necessary to beat the game. It shoots a beam of electricity that can be used like a platform to go over things. (Would've been useful in Mega Man 2 CapCom...) This can be used on walls, and even the air. Just make the platform as long as you want.

Sound: On the NES standards, this soundtrack was amazing. Especially considering the fact that it could only compose 3 notes. Just listen to CutMan and IceMan's stage themes. It's nearly impossible to stop! Now let's take a look at the themes from Mario and Zelda. Sure they were awesome themes to hear, but the Mega Man themes are just so more preferable. It shows a lot more variety than the other two games would. The only theme that would remain is the boss theme and robot master theme. But that's about it. Now take your other two cartridges out of there and put Mega Man in the slot!

Addictiveness: Mega Man itself is an addictive piece of cake. I mean think of it as Pac-Man, only it's a complete game. A blue bombing robot who fights robot masters and obtains weapons is something everyone should enjoy. And it only gets better from here. Let's take something like castlevania for example. As fun as that game may be to others. It's not something I look for in the NES. It's too slow paced, and leaves me on a conveyance note. By all means Mega Man isn't the fastest thing alive, but more action happened with his games. It was always around the corner and something you could enjoy.

Depth: I'm not saying much here because, well think of it. Mega Man is just a robot who collects weapons, jumps ans shoots. (+1 for anyone who get's the reference) Now if this was Mega Man X this category would go straight to the top. But I can't really say this game has more depth than Zelda now can I? You can't possibly keep a straight face and tell me this game has more depth than a series like that? Bur it did make an improvement from earlier titles like Mario.

Difficulty: Run away Sonic because this game's difficulty has taken your spikes from Green Hill Zone and shoved it up Mega Man's hand. Everything. EVERYTHING about this game is hard. For hardcore gamers? A bit less hard. Now let me get one thing straight. I know I will drive yo up the roof by saying this. But I find these games harder to beat than Mega Man X. Maybe it's because I'm more used to that series than Classic, or simply because of the dash... But MM Classic is much more difficult than MMX. The robot master stages won't give me a break, those inconveniently placed bottomless pits...(Dang it I can never make that jump!) Everything in this game is replaced with a difficulty spike. And don't even think you will have an easy time with the Yellow Devil simply by watching tons of YouTube videos on it. You want hardcore? Than Mega Man is declared your best friend here.

Now, for 1987, when Mega Man came out. There were few good games with the released of the NES. But has the series aged well? that is all up to the fans, viewers, and others who find enjoyment from this here blue robot. Myself? I love this series to no end. No matter how simple the story gets, how hard the game is, even how much the game has to offer. If you're gonna start of with a plat-former, star off here. I can make sure that you will be satisfied in the end. Now work up that Viz and get yourself Mega Man ASAP! Take your MegaBuster and send your cartridge out of it!
