I thought I'd write another Atari 2600 game review, I'm going to be reviewing 'Space Invaders' for the A26. I hope you enjoy this review.
Alright Lets Go!
Graphics 7/10
Considering this is an Atari 2600 game, I'm not going to be very harsh and take other consoles into consideration. The graphics in this are excellent compared to the arcade version of this game. The color scheme is a lot more advanced, and thus a lot better on the Iris (eye muscle) The aliens in this game have been worked on greatly and have been much improved from the arcade version. This is an Atari 2600 game that was made in 1980. Putting that into context, although the colors may be very basic and solid, and at times bland, they are quite advanced for that set time period. I don't particularly like how the creators used these colors, they're so random and do not relate to the game what so ever. The background randomly flashes and fluctuates from one color to another. This can be very annoying at times, especially when the aliens are the same color as the background. It became impossible to see what you were glaring at. However, It's clear what the aliens are, even though they're a very simplistic in design. The cannon, I thought it looked like a mine, I don't know why they choose that design.
The game itself had very horrible visual aids. Putting all of my points and views together, this game is an adequate game.
Sound 2/10
There is no exact music to be heard in this game at all. There are about six different sound effects in the game, which are all very basic and can quite frankly be made with a glockenspiel. To be fully honest, these tones, all of them, weren't very appealing to my senses. I didn't particularly admire the sound of the aliens' cadence. I found it very, very bothering and it was quite intolerant at times, and this sound got even more grating on the ear as it sped up and got louder. This 'Tick Tock' noise or effect culminates when you're down to just one alien zipping across the screen hurriedly, sounding something like an electrical drill or kitchen appliance, perhaps even a jackhammer. Putting into context that it's an Atari Game, I will be generous with my rating.
Addictiveness 5/10
I actually can't even believe that I'm saying this. But. I didn't find this game addictive at all, even when putting the graphics and sounds aside. The game was very boring and simplistic as it didn't have really any challenges but destroying aliens inside a cubic box. However, I found killing the aliens very fun and exhilarating, mainly because I love destruction and violence. I also love using weapons too, it makes me feel boss, and this game most definitely provided that.
Story 6/10
Unlike most Atari Games, this one sort-of has a story line to it. Aliens are invading the Earth and it's your job to stop them from landing on the Earth, you must do this to succeed. It's actually a really good story line in my opinion. I love invasions and break-outs, they excite me greatly and are extremely fun. Again, this game provided that too. If you die three times it's game over and you the game resets. An introduction to this game would have been very beneficial because as soon as the game loads it automatically enters you into the Earth and the aliens are already there. Perhaps an introduction illustrating that the aliens are coming into the Earth's atmosphere etc. Overall, this game has a good story line and I will not be harsh on my rating.
Depth 2/10
This game is very similar to ALL Atari games. There isn't great depth involved with these games. You're straightaway a task, or a motive and you must complete this. There are no side tasks involved in this game. This game is specifically just eliminating the aliens and recovering Earth. However, I love the amount of variations in the game, from moving shields to increased width of your cannon which allows you to terminate the aliens and move to the next level.
Difficulty 5/10
The game is really simplistic in my opinion, there's no thought or skill required and thus, the game isn't very difficult or challenging. The hardest 'thing' in the game is probably the laser bombs, but it's actually quite easy to avoid their laser bombs but trying to land your own ordnance on target isn't. If you're off by just the slightest margin it's very likely your shot will ascend all the way to the top of the screen. There is always the possibility a higher row alien will collide with it as it marches over, or maybe you'll hit the mother ship which slithers across the top every once in a while, but there's no guarantee. There are slightly difficult elements in the game, but nothing too challening in my opinion.
Overall 6/10
Overall I find this game very bland and in-particular, even putting all the graphical errors aside . However, this game is kind of fun to play and may be lighten the mood a little. But. It's nothing to get extremely excited about. It's really up to if you want to give this game a go.
