My pc acts up from time to time My screen would go blank, and instantly my CPU fan kicks into 100% speed. After that I have to hard reboot my computer. It happens randomly, whether it's under a heavy load or not. The problem still occurs, even after I downgraded my OS to Win XP SP3 from Vista Ultimate. Any possible causes for this, excluding CPU  temperature and infections?

Current PC specs:
Gigabyte GA-8I865GME-775 motherboard
CPU Socket 775
Pentium 4 Prescott with Hyper-threading support 3.2 GHz with 1 Mb L2 cache
1.5GB DDR SDRAM
200Gb hard drive
82865G Graphics controller
OS: Win XP SP3

hoguan : Try putting a fan on it. It might be overheating. Remove it from enclosed spaces. That was the problem with our computer. Another idea is to delete any programs you aren't using, and then defrag it's memory.

Is it possible you have a virus on your computer?

mrfe: One thing I know, is that my PC is not overheating. I checked the temperature after I forced it to shutdown and power on. The temperature read 44-45 degrees celsius which is normal for my PC.
