Friends of Mineral Town! / More Friends of Mineral Town! -aka FOMT. This review will act as both a review and a basic game guide. So where to start with my favourite of the Harvest Moon Franchise? Well that's not exactly easy! From first impressions Harvest Moon FOMT looks like a simple game, but that is completely wrong! There is so much depth in the Harvest Moon series or it's fantasy branch, the Rune Factory series. From witty characters, to a family of you own, Harvest Moon FOMT delivers! So to start, let me explain the difference between the games for those who do not know, Friends of Mineral Town / FOMT is the standard copy similar to the original, Whilst More Friends of Mineral Town / MFOMT is basically the same game with 2 main differences, you play as a girl, and your choices of marriage are the bachelors / rivals from FOMT (in term, making the "chicks" from FOMT your rivals. Starting off the game you get the usual starting cut/scene (whatever you wish to call it) where your name is decided, as well as your dog's. The mayor also known as Mayor Thomas, informs you of the death of the farm's owner, telling your of his will and the farm being exchanged into your possession. (Huge shock...) So that's that you own a farm and your story begins. Before I start to ramble, lets begin! Here is a quick character list for those interested, with my descr The Bachelorettes. Ann : Daughter of the Inn owner, If you go after her your rival will be: Cliff Karen : If you go after her your rival will be: Rick Elli : Least shes not modest, she keeps herself well covered, which goes amazingly well with her shy personality. If you go after her your rival will be: Doctor Mary : Mary is the library owner and well you could guess, she dresses in nerdy attire. If you go after her your rival will be: Gray Popuri : Pink haired chicken lady. If you go after her your rival will be: Kai Harvest Goddess : The Goddess of the harvest. If you go after her your rival will be nobody! Yup, even without a rival shes harder to marry than any of the others! The Bachelors; Doctor : Works at the Clinic, Gray : Works at Saibara's blacksmith, Kai : He only appears during the summer and leaves at the start of fall, Rick : Works for his mother Lillia at the poultry ranch, Cliff : I have no bloody clue. The Villagers; Anna : Mary's Mother and Basil's wife. Barley : Owns the Yodel ranch where you can buy cows and sheep. Basil : Mary's Father and Anna's husband. Carter : Runs the church, He is also a key person for the marriage of the Harvest Goddess Doug : Owner of the Inn, the only place you can make a phone call. (nice logic game.) Duke : Owns the winery. Ellen : Key to unlocking the secrets of Elli crash, a critical food for exploration of either mines. Gourmet : He has big lips? Gotz : Your lumber specialist, he can extend your house, chicken coop, and barn. Harris : The local police officer. Jeff : Owns the Grocery store. Kappa : Um... nothing to say here, throw cucumbers in the lake mine, lake for 10 days and he will give you a special berry. Lillia : Owner of the poultry farm. Manna : Duke's wife, so basically co-owner of the winery. May : Lives with her grandfather Barley at the Yodel Ranch. Saibara : The blacksmith used for upgrading tools. Stu : Elli's little brother, and Ellen's Grandson. Sasha: Works at the general store. Thomas : The mayor. Won : A key person for the marriage of the Harvest Goddess. He's also a con artist. Zack : He takes your shipments of crops and gives your your payouts daily. Although you can't see them on RGR because it requires a different game to connect, I'll give them a small mention; Luu : From A Wonderful Life. Van : From A Wonderful Life. As for harvest sprites I will talk about them later. GRAPHICS! - 8/10 AWESOME! From the cutest chick to every little character detail, we have to love what FOMT offers with its graphical styling, when you start playing you'll eventually meet everyone in town! All the "Marriage candidates" and rivals, the shop owners (some of the most important people in game) and the misc. characters. The graphics of the characters are fresh and quirky, a break from the usual tough guy in a shot em up. Whilst the places and soothing and relaxing with colourful, but tame colour schemes. What's my favourite part of the graphics? Has to be the lighting changes with each of the four seasons; Spring has bright and colourful colours, Summer has warm reds and darker greens, Autumn has browns ranging from dark to light and leaves yellow and brown, Winter has white... yup... just white... Oh and dead trees SOUNDS! - 7/10 GREAT! Albeit not the best sounds, but they do work well, during the night at the beach the waves are heard clearly, making it a relaxing place to go after your hectic day of farming. Whilst near Kappa's or the Harvest Goddess's pond, during the night small insects can be herd. Even on your farm in your barn or chicken coop the animal noises represent what they are, animal noises... (Ain't I a philosopher ) ADDICTIVENESS! - 10/10 BRILLIANT! Oh god! Why is Harvest Moon so addictive? It's the same as any good old grinding games, YOU CAN'T STOP until you "finish" which never actually happens. An endless cycled caused me to play Harvest Moon with no end (of-course I mean on the gba not on RGR) STORY! - 1/10 Poor... How can you rate a story that doesn't exist, in all fairness, the only story is, is that you where close to the farm owner before he died (shown in cut scene.) So why would I rate it any higher? I would have left blank but... Technically even that small amount of information makes it a story. DIFFICULTY! - 1/10 SUPER EASY! Yup this easy to master game scores a low 1/10 and no that isn't a bad thing, for a game of this type it shouldn't be hard. You do however need to learn things such as how to hire harvest sprites in order to go without any difficulty. But besides that, how could you find this game hard? Unless you waste all your money, oh wait that doesn't matter! You can collect daily items from the floor around town for free... so the game developers made sure, it was never possible to run out of money. Good show! DEPTH! - 10/10 BRILLIANT! It doesn't matter what you want to do, you can do it! You can flirt with the girl of your dreams, plant crops, raise animals or even go mining? Hey? Who needs minecraft? To cover the depth lets go over each individual aspect including; Marriage, Farming, Raising Animals, Mining and Harvest Sprites. MARRIAGE Now one of the most recurring features of Harvest Moon is marriage, First of this means getting a girl to like you and to activate heart events. How does this work exactly? Simple, you can give gifts to your chosen bachelor or bachelorette and if they like them there "love points" will increase, giving gifts they dislike will lower their points. As a there hearts stage increases; Black > Purple > Blue > Green > Yellow > Orange > Red You can activate the corresponding Heart event by being at a certain place at the right time. However you can also activate a rival Heart event the same way, if the rival has all heart events before you, they will marry their chosen bachelorette or bachelor a week later, but if that doesn't happen and you get your love to red and have seen all of her/his heart events you may present them with a Blue Feather bought at Jeff's general store. In which you will get married and later on have a baby. However the Harvest Goddess is a whole other story. FARMING The simplest aspect of Harvest Moon, farming. There are five possible items to crop every season besides winter, however grass can be planted any month besides winter, three can be purchased from Jeff, one from won and the other is unlocked once you have shipped 100 of the other items for the season in the shipping box. SPRING: Turnip, Potato, Cucumber + Cabbage (won) + Strawberries (reward) Summer : Tomato, Corn, Onion + Pineapple (won) + Pumpkin (reward) AUTUMN: Eggplant, Carrot, Sweet Potato + Green Pepper (won) + Spinach (reward) RASING ANIMALS Raising animals is as easy as feeding each adult once a day and interacting with an animal with your selected button. You can also buy a brush for your horse, cows and sheep, sheers for your sheep and a milker for your cows which also help increase its relationship with you. MINING Mining is a large topic, there are two mines, the lake mine (Kappa's Lake) and the normal mine (Harvest Goddess's Lake) You find ores and minerals within the normal mine. You find gems and cursed tools within the lake mine. That is all I will go over in this section. HARVEST SPRITES To recruit these little helpers to work with you, you need to have a good relationship with them, thus you need to give them gifts to increase there heart rating, the best way to do this is by using the same coloured grass found throughout the town. Once you have there heart rating to 3 or more they will work and play with you. However its recommended you get there rating to around 7 as it is less likely to drop below 3 as fast as it would not being raised as high. OVERALL! - 10/10 PERFECTION I'm sure most will agree with this, well any harvest moon fan anyway, each game is unique in its own way and that doesn't exclude Friends of Mineral Town.
