Gauntlet 2 is the second game of a legendary series. For anyone who is not familiar with the Gauntlet series, the games are set in the traditional d&d fantasy world. Gauntlet games support up to 4 players, and multiplayer in my opinion is the best way to play these games because that is when the game play of these games can really shine. Gauntlet games are best served to those who want to go slay hordes of fantasy based enemy's with some puzzle solving on the side. For anyone that played the original Gauntlet game , the sequel is just like it, with everything slightly better in terms of quality.
Graphics: 6
For graphics I give Gauntlet 2 a 6/10 because I feel they are average at best for the time period. I feel like their is something to be desired from the graphics even for a NES game. Maybe the sprites of the characters and enemy's could have been made slightly larger but they surely lack detail.
Sound: 8
The music in the game is catchy, but where this game really shines in terms of sound is the enemy sound effects. The sounds the enemy's make are very unique and one of the most memorable parts of the game, and who can forget the narrator who comes in with "red wizard is about to die!" "blue warrior shot a potion!"
Addictiveness: 8
I give Gauntlet 2 an 8 for addictiveness because it's one of those NES games that is so difficult you can play it for countless hours without beating it. Since their are so many levels and secret warps to skip levels , their is endless ways to go about beating the game, even giving a hardcore gamer the ability to beat the game without taking any warps. The true quality to the game though is the multiplayer game play. Their is just something to be said about going off with some friends to slay a dragon!
Story: 5
For me and a gamer spoiled with the 21st generation most NES games have almost no plot or very little so I find this category hard to asses. This is not a game I would recommend for someone looking for an interesting plot, but more for someone looking for fun hack n slash action with their friends.
Depth: 9
This game is extremely long and very difficult giving much depth to the game. You also have the ability to choose from the wizard, valkyrie, knight, or elf classes, giving you options to play as another class if you manage to beat the game with one class.
Difficulty: 10
This game is very hard to beat and long. Once you start facing large numbers of mixed enemy's it also becomes hard not to run out of health. Some of the puzzles in this game are also rather difficult and until you finally figure them out can get to the point of frustratingly difficult.
Overall: 7.7
I gave this game a 7.7/10 by taking the average from my ratings of the graphics, sound, addictiveness, and depth category's. This game is fun if you have a friend or two to sit down and play it with, but not as recommended for lone gaming. Gauntlet games have become pretty big in the world of gaming so any serious gamer should have experienced Gauntlet 2 at least once. If this game wasn't so difficult that it was nearly impossible I think that I would have given it a better score, but to some people the extreme difficulty is viewed as a good thing.
