Bios setup can ask for a password? Info about the laptop would be useful.

This is a bad problem but don't give up hope because there could still be a possibility that someone will find a fix.

this MAY work.
turn off the laptop. unplug the cord. take out the battery.
then hold down the power button for about a minute.
let go of the power button. put the battery back in and turn on the power.
go into the BIOS. did it work?
some manufacturers put in a BIOS reset, and this is normally how to do it.

if that doesnt work, try and read what the BIOS manufacturer is.
common BIOS's include AMI, Award, IBM and Phoenix.
then let me know and we'll try something else.

no it wont. thats the point. you're removing all sources of power.
if theres power in the laptop the reset wont work.
the power button acts as both a power button and a BIOS jumper reset button on some laptops.

thats why i said put the battery back in afterwards

hmm, if its a bios password by the company that made the bios might be able to figure out the password.
do you know if someone set a password or if it just randomly has one?
as i mentioned before "try and read what the BIOS manufacturer is.
common BIOS's include AMI, Award, IBM and Phoenix.
then let me know and we'll try something else."
does it show a bios company like phoenix or award or something on the screen?
cant think of anything else at the moment but i'll think it over...

If its a common Acer built machine, your best off either calling them or heading into your local computer repair shop and asking them the question, they shouldnt charge you.

i think Acer works a little differently over there Garth, plus that was mentioned earlier in the thread to maybe call them.
but who wants to deal with laptop companys tech support?
im sorry but for the most part they dont know squat and you have to tell them the same thing 50 times just to proceed to the next section

Anyways.
Some BIOS manufacturers implement a backdoor password. The backdoor password is a BIOS password that works, no matter what the user sets the BIOS password to. These passwords are typically used for testing and maintenance. Manufacturers typically change the backdoor BIOS passwords from time to time.

Heres some Reported Phoenix BIOS backdoor passwords (case sensitive):
BIOS
CMOS
phoenix
PHOENIX

If one of them gets you in reset the BIOS to factory default.
let us know what happens and we'll see if we need to think up more ideas.
