As soon as you start a new game if you know the game Breakout, the gameplay of Thunder and Lightning will be very familiar to you. That's right, this game is another game that took its way of play from Breakout, except this game has other features which Breakout did not. Making this clone possibly better than the game it was based around. You start off with your main character (whose name is Mr. Chin according to the manual) who uses his stick to direct his Democ ball to strike various blocks to clear each level. To help the player accomplish this, little flying "carriers" will randomly spawn on the screen and can be hit with a Democ ball, releasing a random power up (including a 1up [extra life] for Mr. Chin). The player should also be alert though, because with every advantage, there is a disadvantage; there are bad characters which make accomplishing each level more difficult, there are some even causing the player to struggle in one level for a very long time (the turtles that turn into blocks in level 3 for instance).
Graphics:
The graphics are very good for this game, and have changing backgrounds that "set the stage" for the level that you are on. Well done for a game on the nes.
Sound:
The sound was very nice and I enjoyed it at first. But repeatedly playing it to compete for the high score competition, I begun to get rather bored of the music and lowered the game volume and played my own music over it .
Replay Value:
This game is very addicting and I come back to it once in a while to try to beat my high score. (And try to get past level 3). Never gets boring for a long time
Story:
Unfortunately, there is no other way to figure out the story without getting a hold of the original nes manual or looking it up somewhere. That being said, the story is rather interesting and makes this the only Breakout clone I know that actually has a well thought out story. (Or any story at all, really).
Difficulty:
The controls are easy off the bat, just move left and right to change the direction of the stick to come in contact with the ball. The range of level difficulty ranges from insanely easy to insanely hard.
