Hurricanes are destructive when they make landfall. Hurricane Season runs from June 1st to November 30th for the Atlantic Basin. Anybody along the coastline from Brownsville TX to Bangor Maine can be impacted by hurricanes. Also the US territories of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands can be hurricane prone. However, some years multiple hurricanes make landfall in a state of territory. Indeed, in those years states/territories get hammered. I decided to make a list of the years where a state/territory had 2 or more hurricanes make landfall. For this list I'm only including hurricanes and not tropical storms. Also if the storm was a hurricane at one point but weakened to a tropical storm at landfall I will be counting them since they where originally hurricanes. 1954-New England (2 Hurricane Landfalls) Since the states that make up New England are small and bunched together I decided to put them all in one group. In 1954 two hurricanes made landfall. Carol made landfall in Connecticut and caused massive wind damage in Massachusetts and Rhode Island as a category 3 hurricane. A few weeks later Hurricane Edna made landfall in Massachusetts as a category 2 hurricane. Overall the two hurricanes claimed nearly 100 lives and caused $500 million in damages. 1955- North Carolina (3 hurricane landfalls) North Carolina took a beating in 1955 as three hurricanes made landfalls in the state. Hurricane Connie made landfall in the state as a high end category 2 hurricane. Right on Connie's heals Hurricane Diane came ashore as a category 1 hurricane. The following month Hurricane Ione came ashore as a category 2 hurricane. In North Carolina alone over 300 people where killed and $800 million in damage was done by the 3 hurricanes. 1959 South Carolina (2 hurricane landfalls) South Carolina had 2 hurricanes make landfall. The first one was Cindy which came ashore as a category 1 hurricane. A couple of months later Hurricane Gracie came ashore as a category 4 hurricane. Overall both storms caused $16 million in damages and caused 30 deaths. 1964 Florida (3 hurricane landfalls) Florida was hammered by 3 hurricanes in 1964. Hurricane Cleo made landfall in the southern part as a category 2 hurricane. Hurricane Dora made landfall in the Northeast Part of the state as a category 2 hurricane. In October Hurricane Isbell made landfall on the Southwest side as a category 2 hurricane. Overall the three hurricanes caused $460 million in damages and killed 20 people. 1966 Florida (2 Hurricane Landfalls) Florida had 2 hurricanes make landfall in the state. Hurricane Alma made landfall in the Florida Panhandle as a category 1 hurricane. A few months later Hurricane Inez made landfall in the Florida Keys. Thankfully, these parts where rural at that time. Still, $100 million dollars of damage was done and 15 people where killed. 1995 Florida (3 hurricane landfalls) 1995 started the second active phase. Florida was hammered by 3 hurricanes. Allison, which had been a hurricane, made landfall as a strong tropical storm. Hurricane Erin made landfall in the Southeast part of the state as a high end category 1 hurricane. Then Erin made a second landfall in the Florida Panhandle as a category 2 hurricane. A few months later Hurricane Opal struck the Florida Panhandle as a category 3 hurricane. Overall, the three hurricanes caused 90 deaths in the state and caused $4.7 Billion in damages. 1996 North Carolina (2 hurricane landfalls) 1996 was a disaster for North Carolina. Hurricane Bertha made landfall as a category 2 hurricane. Thankfully Hurricane Bertha made landfall in a rural area. A few months later Hurricane Fran made landfall in North Carolina as a category 3 hurricane. Overall, the two hurricanes caused 40 deaths and $4.5 billion in damages to the state. 1999 North Carolina (3 hurricane landfalls) 1999 was a bad year for North Carolina. Dennis, which had been a hurricane, came ashore as a strong tropical storm. Hurricane Floyd made landfall as a high end category 2 hurricane. Later in the year Hurricane Irene hit the outer banks as a category 2 hurricane. Damage from the 3 hurricanes was $5.6 Billion and over 70 people died in North Carolina alone. 2004 Florida (4 hurricane landfalls) 2004 was brutal for North Carolina as 4 hurricanes would make landfall in the state. Hurricane Charley came ashore in the southwest part as a category 4 hurricane. A few weeks later Hurricane Frances came ashore in the Southeast Part as a high end category 2 hurricane. The following month Hurricane Ivan struck Gulf Shores Alabama and Pensacola Florida as a high end category 3 at landfall. Then Jeanne made landfall in the South Central part of the state as a category 3 hurricane. In Florida Alone over 200 people where killed, and $45 Billion dollars of damage was done between the 4 hurricanes. 2005 Louisiana (3 hurricane landfalls) and Florida (3 hurricane landfalls) Oh boy this season was a nightmare for the United States. In Louisiana Hurricane Cindy made landfall as a category 1 hurricane. A month later Hurricane Katrina made landfall as a high end category 3 hurricane. Then Hurricane Rita made landfall in Texas and Louisiana as a category 3 hurricane. In Louisiana close to 1,900 people died between the 3 hurricanes and $110 Billion was done in damages. In Florida Hurricane Dennis struck the Panhandle Part of the state as a category 3 hurricane. Katrina also made landfall in Florida impacting the southern tip of the state. Then in October Wilma struck the southwest part of the state as a high end category 3 hurricane. In Florida alone over 100 people where killed, and $25 Billion dollars of damage done. 2008 Texas (2 hurricane landfalls) Dolly made landfall as a category 1 hurricane. A few months later Hurricane Ike made landfall as a category 2 hurricane. Over 200 people died between the two storms and $34 billion dollars of damage was done. 2020 Louisiana (3 hurricane landfalls) 2020 was a destructive year for Louisiana. Hurricane Laura made landfall as a category 4 hurricane in the state. Then Hurricane Delta made landfall as a category 2 hurricane. Later in the year Hurricane Zeta made landfall as a category 3 hurricane in the state. In Louisiana 100 people died and $35 billion dollars of damage was done. So as you can see certain states are prone to getting struck twice. Texas because it is in the Gulf Coast. Louisiana because it is in the Gulf of Mexico and it also sticks out. Florida is surrounded by Water. You have the panhandle, Big Bend Area, the Western Florida Coast, Southern Florida Coast, and Eastern Florida Coast. North Carolina is prone because of steering currents and the state sticks out some. Indeed, sever years have seen multiple hurricanes strike the same state.
