Rabi-Ribi is, using a term I don't use that much, a Metroidvania for several platforms, the Nintendo Switch version of Rabi-Ribi is a great version of the game, like other versions I guess, and Rabi-Ribi is a very fun game I would say, an awesome 2D game, I can say for sure that the people who developed the game genuinely tried to make a good game, where the fan service is just something extra that complements the experience depending on your tastes or who you ask, compared to something like Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed or Harem Girl Isabella (both games also available for Switch), Rabi-Ribi really tries to be a well made game...and it succeeds. Let's begin! Story: The game has a more or less basic story that works for the game and at least makes you want to see what happens next. The main character Erina wakes up in an unfamiliar place with a human appearance, she used to be a normal rabbit in size and appearance but now she looks like a human with (real) rabbit ears. Erina is soon reunited with her master Rumi (a touching moment that made me say ''aaah'' out loud) and then she'll embark on a mission to find/rescue Rumi's younger sister, Miru. The story is only a little interesting and it's not a complex story of course, but I like it and I as I said, it works for the game. It helps that at least pretty much all the characters are likeable, Rabi-Ribi has a great cast of characters (almost every character in the game is a female character) and they are very likeable, I can't hate the cast of characters in a game when several characters speak in third person, characters who speak in third person have a special place in my heart, it's one of my weaknesses to be honest, and several characters in Rabi-Ribi speak in third person including the main character herself, I love the fact that Erina speaks in third person at least every once in a while. Overall, a good story with, more than anything else, a fantastic cast of characters. Graphics: Rabi-Ribi has pixelated graphics, like many modern 2D games, the game has sprites and pixelated graphics that look nice and appealing, the animations can be very smooth, the 2D art looks really nice, the many CG images to unlock look detailed and the game has an appealing and colorful art style. It shouldn't be a surprise that the characters often wear revealing outfits and yes, some CG images can be considered suggestive and can make someone raise an eyebrow. It's not something much more suggestive or inappropriate than other games with an anime art style, in any case...the game looks really nice, especially the 2D art and CG images, definitely an 8/10 at best and at least a 7/10. Sound: Like the last game I reviewed (Sable's Grimoire), Rabi-Ribi doesn't have voice acting, so, I can only judge sound effects and music for this category...well, the game has a great soundtrack, the music in Rabi-Ribi is pretty good and it's also a varied soundtrack, with piano music, 8-bit tunes or electronic music of some kind, orchestral music...there is a lot of great music and the music is memorable. After playing the game the boss theme ''M.R.'' left a big impact on me and it's the boss theme that I have the most in my head after playing the game, I'm not saying that ''M.R.'' is the best boss theme, I'm just saying that it's the boss theme that left the biggest impact on me and I can't stop having that music in my head compared to other boss themes, that said, there are more great songs in the game, ''Exotic Laboratory'', ''Bounce Bounce'', ''Rabi Rabi Beach'' and ''Warp Destination'' are just more examples of the good and memorable music in Rabi-Ribi. The sound effects are satisfying to hear and can also be cartoony, which is fitting for a weird and sometimes funny game like Rabi-Ribi. I don't have much to criticize here, I give this category an 8/10 and I would give it at least a 7/10. Addictive: A 2D game of the same genre as Super Metroid, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse and Owlboy for example, Rabi-Ribi is as good as those games and maybe even better thanks to tight and very fun gameplay, a lot of items to find (as always when it comes to games like Rabi-Ribi) many places to see and many boss battles, Rabi-Ribi has more bosses than other 2D games and it's one of the reasons why it's a very fun game, the fact that there are many characters to defeat, and that's without mentioning the fact that the bosses always have attacks that look like something from a 2D shooter or shoot 'em up, specifically those ''bullet hell'' shoot 'em ups like Deathsmiles, Akai Katana, Mushihimesama Futari etc. As you can imagine, the boss battles can be intense and difficult and I love them. To attack you have a hammer and a fairy, Ribbon, can help you with ranged attacks, as you play the game, you get new attacks and abilities to help in combat and exploration, you can jump higher after a while, you get a double jump, a carrot bomb to destroy some blocks or terrain (and find secret items or areas)...it's as fun as it sounds, and all this with great framerate. Rabi-Ribi runs pretty well and it only has few moments of slowdown, slowdown which may be intentional, who knows. The game also lets you remap controls, which is something I appreciate a lot, partially because the default button to jump is the ''B'' button and I'm more of a person who jumps with the ''A'' button if that's possible. The game has a big variety of enemies, when it comes to enemy variety the game stands out a little. Rabi-Ribi has RPG elements in the form of, for example, badges that you can equip to gain special effects, it can be reduced damage, more HP, etc, but these badges require specific points or PP and you can't equip every badge you find, this feature gives the game even more depth and it makes it more interesting and fun to play as a result. There is a lot to say about the gameplay of Rabi-Ribi and its features, overall, the game is very, very fun to play, it's an addictive game I really like. Depth: It will take you at least 20 hours to beat Rabi-Ribi (something like that), and that's assuming that you intentionally skip every event and try to finish the game as soon as possible on the lowest difficulty, Rabi-Ribi is a long game that has a lot of content, I beat the game in approximately 34 hours, and that's partially because I intentionally ignored the main story to find more items in the game, the exploration in the game can be fast but it's still a game with a lot of content and even unlockable modes. If you finish the game and unlock those extra modes, you'll probably still have things to do (mostly items to get). A 9/10 is fine for this category, it certainly has more content than other 2D games. Difficulty: As I've said before, if a game has different difficulty levels, the number of this category considers those higher difficulties and especially the highest difficulty, because of that, a 10/10 is fine for this category, I played Rabi-Ribi on ''Novice'' and I still lost many time before beating the game...I can only Imagine how difficult the game can be if you play on ''Hard'' or other higher difficulties...Rabi-Ribi can be very difficult and challenging if you want it to be. I don't have much to criticize when it comes to Rabi-Ribi in general, minor details or aspects don't really affect the experience...the lack of voice acting for example, yes, I can easily imagine the game with English voices and even specific voice actresses, Cristina Valenzuela as Pandora, Mela Lee as Miru, Sandy Fox as Cicini etc, but no, the game doesn't have voice acting and it's not the end of the world, I can enjoy Rabi-Ribi a lot even if it's a game without voice acting, that said, I also don't like the fact that the Nintendo Switch version of Rabi-Ribi, published by Circle Entertainment, is not available in physical format, unlike the PS Vita and PS4 versions, it's true that the physical versions of the game are very expensive, but still, I don't like that the Nintendo Switch version is only available digitally worldwide. The fact that the game is only available digitally doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the game however, and if you don't have a problem with the fact that Rabi-Ribi is not available in physical format for Nintendo Switch, I highly recommend the game, even if you don't get the game on sale, I still think that it's worth it, Rabi-Ribi is amazing and if you are a fan of games like Super Metroid, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, or simply want to play an awesome 2D game...I recommend it, a lot.
