Perhaps no video game series defines weirdness and emotional rollarcoasters quite like the Mother series. Known as Earthbound in the west, the series is a strange mix of science fantasy, conspiracy, family drama, and existentialism. Although not as big as other JRPG series like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, or Shin Megami Tensei, Mother has had quite the cult following

Which Mother game do you think is the best?

Earthbound Beginnings, Earthbound, or Mother 3

I've never really given them all a once over, but I can say based on my shirt experience with them, Mother III is undoubtedly the best, plus the translation I think gets updated on occasion, or at least it did for the anniversary.

I hate Earthbound Beginnings, the encounter rate is out of control and there's a sense of emptiness in it. Aside from having a weird atmosphere which would improve the future games, it doesn't stand out for me, among the NES library.

So Earthbound Zero (mother 1) is super flawed and non-linear. I like the game but it's truly a mess, I had to use a guide and I still barely understood what to do, the game is basically open world side quest and completing the game is an after thought.

Earthbound 1 did well in upgrading every aspect thinkable to its predecessor, and had a linear storyline, the characters are fleshed out, but in all honesty if you do try and complete everything in Zero I love the characters a lot more.

Earthbound 2 is definitely amazing, and I love the entire cast, the story is phenomenal, the battle UI is fun and unique to most JRPGs I've played through. The music is just as quirky as the last two games. I think it's probably the best, because it takes both the older games and combines all their elements into so much more.
