Grand Theft Auto 3 was the first game of it's kind, violent, demeaning, abusive, and wrong. How bad do you think it was?

I like it too, just it made everything worse, it was innovative but not right.

I havn't played it.

But did you actually like it alex? In your first post, you seem to not, and now you do.

I personally don't care for games of that nature, I don't like most M rated games for that matter. And I believe GTA3 set the bar in terms of how far to push the M.

But the fact is, there were worse games before.

I reccomend looking at Harvester or Phantasmagoria, those games were way violent.

Plus GTA III didn't force you to shoot the civilians (at least that's what I think) you could kill them, but you'd face police.

It's a cool game, not a game I'll play all the time but if I'm in one of those moods to rebel, destroy, and kill, lol. Overall GTA isn't that bad of a game, movies seem to have worse content alot of the time more then GTA does. I wouldn't recommend it to my kids but it's an alright game to play from time to time...

I think it was a great game.
xfighter- you are correct you can drive around and crash or act like a complete idiot if you want without ever having to kill anyone.
JusTReal- I think you are right in the fact that hollywood is way worse. For example i watched Rob Zombie's Halloween (first one) Unrated edition and was shocked to see a mentally insane girl being raped in an insane assylum by some orderlies. thats just wrong. and as far as how morally wrong GTA3 is I don't think its as big of a thing as people make it out to be. Yeah it is violent and has sex and drugs but really is it really immoral to kill fake people? I think that if more parents would act like parents and people didnt want to blame what they do on everything else then it would be seen as what it is, a videogame that in no way demoralizes people or tells people to kill or anything else.

Thanks metal, you pretty much wrapped up what I was getting at. To add to the whole Halloween thing. That was pretty lame to put that in the script. Halloween was supposed to be a Remake but really wasn't that much of one. It was really a renovate and revision to how Rob Zombie sought it to be. Now I like Rob Zombie and all but really didn't agree with that scene myself. GTA is just an outlet to let loose and do some things that other games don't offer. Because if the killing part is the issue then take a look at all the other killing games out. You really can't pin point one game and blame that one.

@ metal: Yes. It seems video games have slightly stricter standards than movies in terms of mature content. I believe it might be because games, for the most part, get you move emmotionaly involved.

Either way, movies OR games of that nature I usually avoid.

Well, I've never played GTA3 before, so I don't really know what it's like, but from what i've heard, heaps of people like it. Maybe there are some mature things in it but, at the end of the day it's the person who buy's the game's opinion, whether it makes games look bad or doesn't. You don't really have a way to tell, we all differ in opinions.

GTA3 was definitely a pioneer. I appreciate its realness. If people don't like that kind of game then they shouldn't buy it.

I think it was pretty crude, and just appealed to people's instincts to rebel and do bad things, because that makes them feel cool or bad or something to so things they know are wrong. I didn't really like it, I played it at a friend's house, and didn't see the point. After the initial "lol, I killed a hooker/cop/innocent" wears off, there's no real point to the game and it isn't fun anymore.

I've never really cared for the GTA series. It was fun at first just to go around and go on a rampage but the Game really has no substance to it at all. I think for the most part it's played by younger people to make them feel bad and cool :/

Video games ALWAYS had violence. GTA didn't invent it or anything. It was only a matter of time before a game as perfect as GTA 3 came out.

I don't think it ruined the taste because there were many many tasteless games before GTA.

As far as taste goes - the first two Grand Theft Auto games were far worse and GTA III wasn't all that bad at all. Everything was over the top, and it was absolutely meant to be that way. Meh.

There were worse before and unconnected to GTA III, there has been worse after.

I liked gta3 and I don't believe it ruined the taste of videogames. The fact is, 21'st century games will never be what games before were like. We are moving into 3 dimensional hi-defenition gaming. People don't want sprites, they want characters they can look at in detail such as gears of war or uncharted. Gta was just responding to what everyone wanted, and I believe it worked in a big way, expanding the sandbox gameplay to singleplayer and not holding it exclusivly to multiplayer. It worked for me, I played countless hours on that game when it came out, though it did kindof warp my view of the world alittle.

Honestly the game wasn't that great, they tried to put to many things into one game, which left all the aspects mediocre. The graphics were ok, the guns were ok but shooting was horrible, driving the cars was ok, but controlled pretty horrible, the story line is like any storyline from a gansta or drug dealer movie.

To me it was just over rated and there were better games to play.

And yes this pushed the M to the limit thats why it was threatened and almost forced of the store shelves.

Apsham is completely correct. There were TWO WHOLE GAMES BEFORE GTA 3. Those two had much more violence, just not as graphically depicted because they are top-down games. GTA is not the first game to ever cause controversy. Ever heard of a little game called Mortal Kombat??? Far before that game was one called "Death Race." It was about driving a race and winning points by running over pedestrians. Funny thing is that Katamari looks like the Holocaust compared to this thing, yet it was almost banned for being so horrible. Just all ways keep in mind that games are just games!
If a video game bothers you so much, maybe you need to look into your own head and morals before blaming any video game.
