Mega Man in Super Mario Bros Featured Review

Mega Man in Super Mario Bros Review by: tornadocam - 5.9/10

Mega Man in Super Mario World (Mega Man Hack)
Mega Man is an iconic franchise and is often ranked up there with Mario. Both Mega Man and Mario both debuted in the same decade the 80's. Mega Man, is to Capcom as Mario is to Nintendo. In fact, most gaming experts rank these two icons in the top 5 of greatest as well as most popular video game characters. So what would happen if one crossed into the others world. Well lets find out. Warning, this review may contain tornado rants.

Story: 2

Unlike original Mega Man and Mario games the makers of this game did not really give us a story and that hurts the rating. We do not know how Mega Man got pulled into the Mushroom Kingdom, what was he doing there, and did Mario request help we don't know. But based on game play it seems like for whatever reason. Mega Man is in the Mushroom Kingdom. He must fight the Koopa Troop and use Mario Power ups. Wow, anybody lost yet. It would have been so great if the makers of this game gave a story or a plot. Bringing a legendary & iconic character and putting that character into another iconic characters world should have been epic. A story line could have had so much potential. The makers of this game could have gotten creative here. I like the idea of putting Mega Man in the Mario world or vice versa. In the hack Mega Man Ultra some Mario states were included in the boss stages and it rocked. But not so much here. So I hate to do this but I think the best I can give the story is a 2 out of 10. There just really isn't much here

Graphics and Controls: 6

The graphics I had a hard time rating, because there were some good points and bad points as well. The good points was the makers of this game used Super Mario Bros I graphics and they did a good job with the stage layouts. So, that was a plus. I also like the colors in the background it looks like the original Super Mario Bros game which is what I think the makers of this game were aiming at. However, there were some bad parts as well. First of all, when Mega Man clears a stage it looks like he is doing disco. I have nothing against Disco. In fact I like oldies music and Disco. Its kind of humerus that Mega Man looks like he is doing disco while going through pipes. So what is the problem? The sprites are terrible is why it is so bad. Mega Man in this game does not even look like Mega Man in the 8 byte games. I guess that is because they were using one of the first Mario Games. The original Super Mario Bros had a few sprite errors but that was because it was one of the first Nintendo games. Mega Man I had the same problem. Super Mario Bros 2 and Mega Man 2 fixed the sprites. So I kind of feel like the makers of this game could have done a better job with the sprites.

The controls in this game were not too bad but not to great either. Mega Man fires his buster okay and he can jump okay. However, sometimes he appears sluggish and I often found myself fighting against the controls. This can get you stuck in places, hemmed in corners, or cause you to fall into pits. Therefore, I think the best rating I can give the graphics and controls is a 6 out of 10. Its not horrible but it is flawed. On the other hand there are some good points here.

Sound: 7

The sound in this game is fairly decent. The game uses the same sound as Super Mario Bros I. The tunes though did get remastered. I was kind of not expecting that because the original Mario Game had good quality sound and didn't need to be changed. On the other hand, some of the tunes sounded nice being sped up. The enemies when they throw stuff at you or run into you make the same sound in the original Mario Game. It lets you know the enemies mean business. I really like how the enemies sounds were not changed. The main problem I have with the sound is Mega Man Buster sound. It does not even sound close the classic sound Mega Man's Buster got in MM2 and future games. I felt like it was trying to cross Mario's fireball sound with Mega Man buster sound. So overall the sound is decent but Mega Man's buster brings it down. I give it a 7 out of 10.

Replay Value: 5

The replay value is kind of iffy here. This game had so much potential. When I first found this game I was eager to play it because I like both characters. The problem is this game has some pretty serious flaws that it kind of takes the joy out of it. I mean I will play this game again so it is not getting anything below a 5. But is it a game I'm going to play all the time like I would other Mario, Mega Man or even Baseball Games. Well the answer is No. Its the flaws. Maybe the makers of this game will correct the issues. The lack of a story, sprite issues, problems with the controls, and other problems kind of bring the replay value down. I was expecting a lot more. So I give the replay value a middle of the road rating.

Depth: 6

Mario and Mega Man games are infamous for their high amount of depth. So did this game have lots of depth. Well this game does have depth to it but the makers of this game toned it down. There are not that many power ups I have found in this game. I was thinking Mega Man would have special weapons he could use. Like I was expecting ice slasher, fire storm, thunder beam and other special weapons. I have not found them in this game. If they are in this game I have either overlooked them or not found them. Since this is the Mushroom Kingdom then maybe Mega Man could use Mario Items. Well not really I mean there are power ups you can find in this game. You can get buster power ups. In fact that is required if you want to use the Mega Buster. I do think you can get the fire weapon too. But those are the only two I have found. The depth in this game comes from the stages. The makers of this game made the stages long, which was a nice touch. Also they are lots of secrets in this game just like a Mario Game. The game does have some depth but not as much as the original games have. So I give the depth a 6 out of 10.

Difficulty: 8

This game is difficult but its difficulty is hard to rate. At times if is the good kind of difficulty, that challenges you. While other times its the flaws and it makes the game difficult for the wrong reasons. Lets start of with the good parts. It should be noted when you begin the game you cannot use the buster. You have to step on enemies like Mario does to knock them out. Also if you get hit and you do not have the buster you are finished you lose a life. Just like Mario does before he gets a power up. You have to find the buster icon to get the Mega Buster. Once you find the buster icon you can use your buster to defeat enemies. But remember one hit by an enemy and you lose it till you find it again. What adds to the difficulty is that unlike classical Mega Man games. Enemies take several hits with the buster to defeat. So when you have a lot of them coming at you at once. You might just want to jump on them. The enemies in this game can bury you. Enemy placement can get you hit or killed in this game. Enemies will come at you from all direction. Moreover, just like the regular Mario Bros game you can get stuck in spaces as you can't go back. I like this type of difficulty its the kind that challenges you.

Now a lot of times it seems like your fighting against the controls. When Mega Man is running the sprites come into play and it seems sluggish. This will get you hit a lot or cause you to fall into a pit. Also the controls being sluggish can cause you to fall into a pit even though it looks like you will clear it. Due to the sprites and controls its so easy to get hemmed and stuck in this game. So yeah that makes the difficulty in that sense wrong. I like games that are difficult for the reasons above. But fighting against the controls makes games difficulty for the wrong reason. Thus I give the difficulty an 8 out of 10. Its a difficult game for the right reasons but for the wrong reasons too.

Overall rating: 5.9

This game was hard to rate. I felt like the game had a lot of potential and there were some good parts to this game. But this game also had some serious flaws. Its not the worst game I have played but it could have been a lot better. I mean no offense to the makers of this game by the way.

I will start off with the good. Having Mega Man in the Mushroom Kingdom was a good idea.In fact, it shows creativity putting Mega Man in the Mushroom world or putting Mario in the Mega Man world. Its creative by putting two legendary video game icons in each others world. Moreover, the color and backgrounds were nicely done. The sounds with the exception of the buster were nicely done, and the difficulty for the right reasons was good too.

However, as I stated this game had some serious flaws. In my last review Mega Man Ultra there was a Mario stage in that game that had Mario enemies. Guess what, it was awesome and it rocked. The sprites were like how they are supposed to be. That game also had the right graphics, controls and sound. So putting two characters in each others game can be done. I really think the makers of this game were trying to do that. I'm willing to think this was one of the first Mega Man Mario hacks. The more recent hacks of the two franchises are nicely done. So that is why I think this was maybe one of the earlier tries. Also they were using one of the very first Nintendo games. That is probably why there were some flaws right there.

I really was hoping for a story like Mario and Mega Man games have. A story would have made the game better. It would have explained why Mega Man was in the Mushroom Kingdom. Some people don't care about stories. But I like details in games. The sprites in this game are not that good and look out of whack. The controls is what really disappointed me the most. Mario and Mega Man are known for having some of the best controls ever. So it was shocking to see how bad the controls were. Fighting against the controls makes the game difficult for the wrong reasons. Mega Man cannot run that well in this game as when he does his sprites really mess up. Also I think they could have done a better job with Mega Man's buster in this game. It does not even sound like his buster. It also does not sound like Mario's fireball either. I think they were trying to cross the sounds but it came out wrong. The game's depth could have been better. It would have been better if they would have included Mega Man's special weapons in this game. So the depth was toned down (Mario and Mega Man games are infamous for their amount of depth). The difficulty was right for the right reasons such as enemy placement as well as hit points. On the other hand the difficulty was for the wrong reasons. Fighting against the controls is not good difficulty as it does not challenge the player.

To wrap it up would I recommend this hack. I will let you be the judge of that. If you want to see Mega Man in the Mario world then this game could be a starter. However, I  highly recommend you play some of the better Mario Mega Man hacks out there. But maybe the sprites and controls do not bother you. If they don't then I would say play this game and enjoy it. Its not one of those games that is so bad you never want to play again. It does have some serious flaws that I have covered. But it also has some good things about it too. Thus, I give the rating a middle of the road rating 5.9 sounds about right. The game has its good and bad points. That is why I think it deserves a middle of the road rating. Not the greatest but not the worst either.
