Mortal Kombat Advance(d) Failure   8 ball
Seriously this game is terrible. You'd think as a fan of Mortal Kombat, that they would play almost every MK game and they would have it on the go, no? Well the people who developed this game must've wanted people to convert to Street Fighter because this is a mess. Sound is decent for a Gameboy at the time. Graphics are crap, but then again it tried to be the SNES port but somehow failed. Can't say it's addictive. The AI is always a cheating fool also the lack of buttons guarantees a bad time.
My advice is just play this game. It's a once in a lifetime experience. I say this only because you'd probably only want to play it once and destroy its existence forever. Kinda like the E.T cartridge

A not so good Mortal Kombat Game   tornadocam
Mortal Kombat has been a huge hit since it debuted on the 16 bit systems in the early 1990's. Mortal Kombat games have also been ported to other systems. Mortal Kombat Advance is basically a remake of Ultimate Mortal Kombat ported to the Game Boy Advance. So in this review I will be comparing the GBA version to Ultimate Mortal Kombat and Trilogy.
Plot: 8
The plot was left unchanged from Ultimate and Trilogy. Shao Khan is an evil ruler of the Outer World. One day it was believed that travel from the Earth Realm to the Outer World would be possible if the energy was right. To keep the energy in balance the elders set up a tournament called Mortal Kombat. One day Khan travels to the Earth Realm taking souls. Some of the Earth Warriors survive and learn they were chosen by Warrior/Elder Rayden. The Earth Warriors enter the Tournament to defeat Khan and his warriors to try to restore the Earth Realm. In the meantime they also set out to liberate other worlds Khan has taken over. The first tournament saw Khan's forces defeated. In the second tournament Khan is outraged and once again tries to take over the worlds but is defeated. The third tournament Khan invades Earth takes souls. In the meantime he resurrects his dead warriors who according to the game  have been dead for 10,000 thousands of years.
The plot was left unchanged from Ultimate or Triology. I really liked the plot as it gives history of why the tournaments exists, it gives history on Khans plots to take over the entire universe, and it shows what is at stake. So since the plot was unchanged I give it the same rating as I did the other games. I give MKA a solid 8 out of 10.
Graphics and Controls: 5
The graphics in this game are okay. The backgrounds look like they did in Ultimate/Trilogy. The stages are the same and the color matches the backgrounds nicely. However sometimes it seems like the backgrounds are not as clear as they were in Ultimate & Trilogy. I do not know if it is because this is a Game Boy or what. In addition, the sprites are not as sharp as they were in the original games. I was disappointed in that because the GBA should have very good sprites since it runs on a similar engine as the 16 byte systems do.
The Controls really suffer in this game. It seems like the controls are not smooth and sluggish. The fighters seem sluggish than they do in the original game. The controls just feel like they are sloppy. In addition, the controls feel stiff overall.
In the original game I gave the graphics and controls a high rating. This game the graphics and controls are very sloppy in this game. That really brings the rating down. The only thing that keeps this from getting a lower rating is the stages' colors being the same. At the end of the day I give the graphics & Controls a 5 out of 10
Sound: 6
The sound in this game has been toned down from the original game. Fighters no longer scream real loud in agony like they did in the original game. The screams in this game have been made literally into whimpers. The original game had agonizing screams by the fighters when moves were being done against them. Now, the fighters when performing moves still make sounds. Fireballs maintained their original sound, kicks and punches still have their original sound. They kept the sound of the hits which is good cause it lets the player know they are doing damage. But toning down the screams when a fighter is getting hurt really hurts the sound in this game.
In addition the music is not as smooth as the original games. The music has tingles in it and does not even sound like it should. I found that the tunes were not as clear as they were in the original game. I do not like Tingles and I hate it when sound tracks are messed up. Therefore, I give the sound in MKA a 6 out of 10.
Addictiveness (replay Value) 4
I will be honest I only play this game when I do not have access to Ultimate or Trilogy. This is not my favorite Mortal Kombat game due to its many flaws. I play this game the least. The makers of this game really toned down this game and took a lot of the fun out of the game. The original games were fun to play and they still are fun to play. But this one I only play when I cannot play the original version. I give the replay value a 4 out of 10.
Depth: 6
Despite this game's flaws it does have some depth to it. Fighters can be unlocked in this game by completing certain challenges. The player also has a lot of fighters to chose from and each fighter has their own story line. So a lot of times it is fun to play the game using a different fighter. So what brings the rating down. Well in the original game each fighter had different moves and several fatalities to perform. In this game the fighters just have 1 fatality and some of the fighters moves were removed. So yeah, that hurts the depth rating. I give the depth rating a 6 out of 10.
Difficulty: 5
The difficulty in this game really suffers. The original games were difficult. The player could chose their difficulty level, but certain fighters were more tougher. In the original game certain fighters would just bury you when you fought against them. In this game the difficulty has been toned down a lot. Fighters have limited moves so that makes the game easier. Also a lot of moves were removed so the moves that were retained do less damage. It just seems like this game took a lot of the challenges out. Now this game can still be difficult as some of the fighters still can cause you to lose energy quickly. That is what saves this from getting a lower rating. I give the difficulty a 5 out of 10.
Overall: 6
Okay Mortal Kombat Advance was released for the Game Boy Advanced. The makers of this game admitted they toned down the violence, gore and only gave 1 fighter a fatality move. The reason for this was because they were trying to make Mortal Kombat on Game Boy more geared toward kids. First of all what were they thinking.  Mortal Kombat has never been a kid's game. Almost all of the Mortal Kombat games have a rating of M, which I think means 17 and older. Basically Mortal Kombat is an adult game and should never been made a kids game. Ultimate and Trilogy games were fun because of all the moves the player could do. The original game had very good graphics, controls and sounds.
By making this geared toward kids it really took the fun out of t he series. I have played a lot of Mortal Kombat games. I have played I, II, III, Ultimate, and Trilogy. Those games were fun and are still fun to play as. This game is one of the worst Mortal Kombat games I have played. It really does not seem like Mortal Kombat. This game just has so many flaws. The graphics and controls are not as good as the original game. The sound is way off from the original. The fighters as I have ranted about have had their moves toned down. I do not know what they were thinking by trying to make this a kid friendly version of Mortal Kombat but it did not work in my opinion.
This game does have some positives despite its flaws. The plot was left unchanged which is very good considering they changed everything else in this game. The stages retained their color which was quite nice. Also the game allows you to unlock fighters which is a good thing. But can I give this game a high rating. To be honest I do not think so this game just has too many flaws. In fact I will go as far as to saying I cannot recommend this game. If players want to really to play a good Mortal Kombat Game. I recommend playing Ultimate for SNES or Sega. I also recommend playing Trilogy for Play Station those games are just awesome and special. I give the overall rating a 6 out of 10. The positives in this game keep it from getting a lower rating.
