The New Super Mario Bros (Overall) We are going to be talking about the New Super Mario Bros. This is a released on the Nintendo DS in 2006. The New Super Mario Bros has the feel of some of the classic Mario games.
The map really reminds me of Super Mario Bros 3 and some of the levels remind me of Super Mario Bros (the first one).
The main reason I really enjoyed this game is because of the fact that it was made in the same style as the best Mario games ever made.It is side-scrolling platforming at its best for the DS.
There are some cool new power ups in the New Super Mario Bros. There is a giant mushroom, it makes you grow huge and smash any thing in your path! It is pretty much the regular mushroom just on steroids (and with out all the nasty side effects!). There is also a blue shell. What does the blue shell do? It basically turns you into a blue Koopa Troopa with Mario's head poking out. You can duck down into your shell and enemies can hurt you.
The controls are pretty simple in the game. You will only need to use two face buttons, one to run or use fire ball (if you have fire flower power up), and one to jump. You can also do a Ninja Gaiden style wall jump in this game!
You can play as Luigi in the New Super Mario Bros. I don't think it changes the story or game play at all.
New Super Mario Bros has some new enemies and the old enemies that you know and "love". Some enemies you may see in this game are Amp, Ball 'n' Chain, Balloon Boo, Bob-omb, Koopa Troopa, Fire Chomp, Super Dry Bones, and many, many more.
There are some mini games in New Super Mario Bros, some that include Action- Snowball Slalom, Run, Bob-omb! Run!. Puzzle- Wanted!, Hide and Boo seek, and Loves me.....?. Table- Speed, Memory match, and Picture poker. 1 on 1- Jumping Brothers, Bob-omb sudden death, and Vs. Pair-a-gone. There are many more mini games to be played!
You can collect big gold star coins in levels (three per level). You need five of these coins to get into the mushroom houses. You can get 1ups or power ups in the mushroom houses, you can also save after spending the five coins, I have done this alot just because I need to save.
If you are already powered up (with fire flower or blue shell ect) and you get another power up you can use it later on when you need it. This comes in handy! Lose your fire power? Well you have another so its all good!
This game is what all new/newer games should strive to be. A foot in the past but moving toward the future. I give the Overall an 8. A very good score for a new game.
(Graphics) The Graphics are very nice. Each level looks totally different from the last and from the next. You can tell that there was alot of work put into the graphics and level design of the New Super Mario Bros.
Your enemies look crisper and realer then ever but that's to be expected from a newer game. Mario looks great, Bowser looks ferocious, and the worlds around you look oh so real.
I still and will always love the look of a classic game better (8-16 bit) but I have to say I like the way this game looks.
I will give the graphics an 8. I like the graphics but I have seen better on the DS. they look great, very easy on the eyes but there is still room for improvement.
(Sound) For me this is where the New Super Mario Bros really shine. I love the music, and I love the sound effects!
The music as a classic feel with a new crisper sound. Alot of the songs remind me of songs from Super Mario Bros 3, which is a great thing. I loved Super Mario Bros 3, it was one of my favorite NES games as a kid and still is. I have so much love for the music in that game, so listening to the music in this game brings back so many good feelings!
Each level seems to have a sound track that fits the level perfectly. I give the sound a perfect 10! Nostalgia is the driving force for giving it such a high score. I have not really found that many new games that bring back those good feelings so when I find one that does it really leaves an impact on me.
(Addictiveness) The New Super Mario Bros is pretty dang addictive! It is really fun and easy to pick up and play. Once you start playing it you really don't want to stop.
For me the New Super Mario Bros is just as addictive as the original Super Mario Bros, and that's really saying something! I normally hate new games so if I am saying its as good and addictive as a classic game then this game must be good!
There are alot of chances to save in this game, like after beating a castle or spending star coins. Being able to save and pick up right where you left off (and not having to play the same ol levels over and over) really bumps up the addictiveness.
This is a fun game that any Mario fan will want to keep on playing. Addictiveness will get a nice shinny 9! That being said, for me it has a high addictiveness to it but very little replay value. Fans of newer games will probably want to play it over and over though.
(Story) Ok, its a Mario game so I am pretty sure you can guess the story! The only thing that is different in the story of this game then other Mario games is that you kill Bowser in the first level and Bowser Jr. kidnaps Peach.
I am not going to go into the story anymore then that. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone. I give the story a 5. Same ol story, another new game.
(Depth) This game is not very long at all. New Super Mario Bros has all of 8 levels. It has a map just like the one in Super Mario Bros 3, a bunch of levels to play within the level. You can skip over alot of them to get to the castle just by getting star coins in the levels you do play and spend them to open up a new path.
I skipped over two worlds/levels (what ever you want to call them) not even meaning to. I am sure if you knew what you where doing you could skip more.
I know this is on a handheld console but most of the games on the DS are much longer then the New Super Mario Bros. I give depth a 4.
(Difficulty) Ok, anyone that knows me knows how much I complain about how all new games are way to easy. "Oh you beat Oblivion? well who cares! Who couldn't beat Oblivion!" Well this game proved me wrong. New Super Mario Bros is pretty dang hard! In no way is it as hard as some of those classic games that made us the angry adults we are today, but its still kinda hard.
All the challenge in this game is fair. No cheap shots. Each level gets a little harder then the one that came before it.
The New Super Mario Bros game gives out 1ups like candy on Halloween, and its a good thing! You really shouldn't run out of lives, but the game is a challenge at times.
I give difficulty and 8. I didn't have that hard of a time beating it but compared to the other games I have played for the DS and other new/newer console this game is hard. If it was on a system like the NES or Super Nintendo I would only give it a 6 at most.
(End) Anyone that has a DS should really get this game! It has a classic feel and a new look. This is one of the best new games I have ever played. Good job Nintendo for keeping Mario great!
