Phantasy Star II Guide

Hello gamers and welcome to another of my game guides. As usual, I want to make you progress quickly and grind your levels with as little effort as possible. Since there are only three boss battles in the entire game, the grinding will be very short and sweet. In fact, the first speedrun for the game escape them entirely; I will not go this far however.

1.                      The Biosystem Lab

1.1   Darum’s tragic destiny

Village: Paseo

When you gain control of Rolf, exit Paseo and walk towards the tunnel. Walk north to a ladder but don’t take it; walk east and go south after a forest. Keep going south until you reach the next village.

Village: Arima

By going back directly to your house after exiting Arima, Rudo can join your team but there’s no rush if you escape every fight (you can walk due west to the tunnel rather than walk around like you did). Talk around if you want and exit the village. Walk east to cross a small bridge, go between these greenhouses

And keep walking east (follow the coast) to a dungeon.

Dungeon: Shure

Follow the path west, hugging the western wall up (it’s long but straightforward) to get to a chest with 40 mesetas. Keep walking west to take futuristic stairs going up. Go south, west, up when you see a chest (you will see stairs nearby) and go towards it to get dimate. Take the stairs right above, walk right and up until you get a chest with head gear. Exit that room, walk west in the corridor, north and go around the room to take the stairs. Exit the room up, walk east, down when you can and take the stairs above you. Hug the eastern wall down (don’t fall in the black holes you see) and get 200 mesetas. Walk back up, go between the holes, follow the path to exit the hole area, walk east, go west around here

And keep walking west to take more stairs. Take the corridor west right above a corpse and follow it to get a silver ribbon. Backtrack to the corpse, walk west hugging the lower wall, walk north around the chest you just opened, follow the northern wall west, go down all the way when you can, follow the windy path (with a western direction) and check the corpse to get a small key and a letter. Read the latter and backtrack all the way to the stairs to go down. Backtrack to the holes and jump in the right-hand one when you can. Follow the northern wall east (pass the “ground pipes” around the stairs) and go down when you can to take stairs going down (the arrows point down). Use the key to get dynamite, go back upstairs, walk west until you see stairs going down. Take them, use the key and take the second dynamite stick. Take the stairs back up, walk west (outside the room) and follow the path north to a room with two staircases. Take the one going down and unlock the chest to get monomate. Walk back up, exit the room and walk east; go south when you can, then east under ground pipes and take the stairs down. Unlock the chest to get 150 mesetas. Now use an escapipe to exit the dungeon quickly.

Once outside, walk south and east of the forest, cross a small bridge, go around and under the second greenhouse you see and keep walking west to the next dungeon.

Dungeon: Nido

Use a dynamite stick to open the door, walk east as far as you can, go north, west and go upstairs. Go north to get 100 mesetas, go back to the stairs, walk east and towards more stairs going up. Walk slightly north and west (around the stairs) as far as you can, north and west to get a trimate. Backtrack to the stairs to go back down, backtrack to the other staircase to go down again, walk west, north (taking the next corridor up on your right) and go upstairs. Walk south (also in the corridor immediately to your left), get 20 mesetas in the chest to your left and backtrack towards the stairs but go west instead of north. Go south when you can to get dimate, keep walking west on the main path, go north when you can and take the stairs going up on your right. Go right, down, right and get 60 mesetas. Backtrack to the stairs, walk left and take the other staircase due west. Walk east, go down the second corridor you see, then east to take some stairs. Go down, left to take some stairs, follow the path west and start walking up around here

Talk with Teim, escape the dungeon and warp back using a telepipe (Arima or Paseo doesn’t matter). Cross the bridge you avoided to first go to Arima, enter the tunnel and watch Darum’s tragic ending. Keep walking to exit the tunnel.

1.2   The mysterious Biosystem Lab

Walk due west to cross a bridge, south at the first greenhouse you see, cross another bridge and enter the next village.

Village: Oputa

Whenever you have 2000 mesetas (for males) to spend, walk straight west of the armor store (under the weapon store) to talk with Usvestia in his house. Say yes to hear the game’s soundtrack or no. When you’re done, exit the village. Walk south, west to cross two bridges, east to cross another bridge and enter the next dungeon.

Dungeon: Biosystem Lab

Use the other dynamite stick you have to open the door. Walk up straight to the wall, go right and upstairs. Follow the northern wall west, enter a narrow corridor when you see a jelly fish in a glass tube, follow the path around other tubes and walk east here

Walk north to go upstairs, walk south a short way to get antidote, walk south to the wall and follow the path. Walk south when you can to get a star mist (heal all to everyone), go back up to the wall and follow it west (pass glass tubes). Go south of those tubes as soon as you can, follow the path (pass a black hole), get a scalpel near glass tubes, keep following the path and take the stairs near two holes. Walk east, never deviate from your path and walk north of the first accessible stairs to take the ones further up. Walk left, down all the way, follow the path, go down and follow the path west. Go down when you can, west at the second corridor to get dynamite and backtrack to the stairs. Walk north, follow that wall west without deviating and go down the second corridor here

From there, walk left, down, follow the path and use your dynamite on a door. You will fall down a long way to the basement. The orange tiles you see cause damage, so hug walls when you can to avoid them because they can kill you. Anyway, walk left and up, follow the path and go right when you see the second set of glass tubes to get trimate. Walk back to the wall to follow it east and you will eventually get there; check it to get the recorder

Escape the bioplant and teleport back to Paseo (here)

Go to the central library for a scene and go back to your house to get Amy (a doctor) and Hugh (his techniques affect biological monsters). Warp back to Oputa and exit the city.

2.                      Climatrol

Walk back to the biolab. Enter the tunnel south, use the key tube you receive to proceed, hug the cliff east, cross the tunnel and get to the next village.

Village: Zema

Power up as needed and exit town, crossing the tunnel. Walk south to the dry canal, east to cross a bridge, west between trees to another bridge, walk between the greenhouses, walk north towards the dry canal, cross the bridge and enter the next village.

Village: Kueri

The only interest in this city (later on) is the house to the far south next to the clone lab; hug the city walls to enter it. Anyway power up as needed and exit the city. Walk back across two bridges, walk east and follow the coast south (near impassable mountains). You will eventually reach the next dungeon.

Dungeon: Roron

Note that I will only show you the interesting treasures; the other ones are just garbage (literally). Anyway, walk around the first room you see (you can) and keep walking to take the next stairs you see. Circle east around the piles of garbage (that’s what it is) follow the path without deviating and go north of the stairs you see to get a cannon. Keep walking north to take the next stairs. Follow the western wall south (pass a Motavian), take the stairs, walk due south, take the first corridor to your right when you hit a dead end and talk with both Motavian.

Exit Roron and you will now have the jet scooter for you (note that you can fight on water still). Just follow the coast east, go around an island with impassable mountain and to the north (east of the islands), keep going north and disembark on the eastern part of the next island (Uzo) you see to your next dungeon.

Dungeon: Maruera Cave

Walk right to climb stairs, go left and climb two flights of stairs, go left and go down stairs, go up one flight of stairs and walk left. Go down three flights of stairs, up another one and walk left to enter a portal (?) Climb the stairs to your right, climb up two flights of stairs, walk right to go down one, walk right to go down another one and right some more to enter another portal. Walk left and walk up the stairs to get the Maruera leaves.

Exit the cave, warp back to Kueri and go see the inventor. Say yes and he will give you Maruera gum. Exit the city, walk south west (without crossing the bridge) to your jet scooter and go straight west. Go north around Uzo island you see and keep navigating until you see this

If you can’t find it, go back to the island and navigate south to the islands you passed to get the Maruera leaves; it’s due south of there. Use the Maruera gum to enter the dungeon

Dungeon: Water cave

Once again tread carefully around the orange tiles. Walk west, go southwest when you can (take two steps on an orange tile), keep walking west, north, west under orange tiles, north as soon as you can and follow the path. Walk west under several orange tiles, go southwest when you can (you will walk on a few) and enter the main dungeon.

Dungeon: Climatrol

This area is good for level grinding with the green jellies; they often duplicate and this clone has the same number of hit points than the “parent” jelly. Anyway, follow the eastern wall south without deviating, go left at an intersection and take the stairs. Walk east to take stairs, southwest to get the jewel ribbon and back north around the hole to take more stairs, and south to climb even more stairs (don’t forget the fiber vest). Go southwest (right of a pool), take the stairs, go north for more stairs and walk west for a ceramic bar. Walk back east (ignoring the stairs) and follow the path to take some stairs. Walk east, take the second path down, walk northeast to take some stairs and follow the path due east to take more stairs. Walk right to take stairs, follow the path to more stairs, go down without falling in the hole to more stairs and walk due west to take even more stairs. Walk east, take the stairs against the wall east of the pool and walk back up to the original flight of stairs (after getting the chests).

Walk southeast of the stairs, go left of the pool and against the southern wall to take some stairs. Go northwest to more stairs (avoid the hole), take the stairs right away, hug the southern wall east to avoid the hole to get knife boots and walk back west, pass the first set of stairs, to take the next one. Walk east, ignoring the stairs, to get a laser bar. Walk back to take the first flight of stairs that pops up, walk north to the wall, east, down and east to some stairs. Walk down to take more stairs, south around the pools to take the third flight of stairs you meet, west to get sandals and go back to take the first flight of stairs your see. Walk west, take the first stairs you see, follow the path, take the first stairs you see above a hole and follow the path north to more stairs. Make your way west (around two sets of ground pipes), follow the northern wall west to some stairs, follow the path and take the first stairs you see. Take the first flight of stairs below you, walk north and go right of the pool, follow the ground wires above you east and you are back to the original flight of stairs.

Walk northeast this time; go right of the pools, around another one and up some stairs. Walk southwest to more stairs, follow the path and go down when you can to more stairs. Walk west above the hole to get a silver ribbon, follow the path east pass the stairs to the end to take a different flight of stairs. Follow the path west to more stairs, walk east, go right in the second corridor of ground pipes and be ready to fight.

Boss fight: Neif First

Unless you leveled Nei to level 50, you can’t win this fight. Strip her of her objects to sell them later and watch her die (she has to be alive when starting the fight). After a short scene you jump in.

She either has an attack-all technique or a single one with a sword that is much stronger. Have the hero cast Nafoi (acquired at level 14), Rudo attack and Amy heal as needed (and cast defensive spells like deban and shu). Stay healthy and she should do down easily.

After a long scene go back to your house to have the final members: Anna (she uses boomerangs), Kain (essential in the next part) and Shur the thief, who may steal useful stuff around Paseo when she’s in your team.

3.                      Motavia’s big flood

I said Kain is essential because, from now on, monsters on Motavia are only robots and his techniques affect machines. Even after the present mission he is better because he can wield larger guns.

Anyway make sure someone knows Musik and warp to Kueri. Exit the city, get back to your jet scooter and navigate west. Go under Uzo island and keep navigating to the coast; land north of the canal. Walk west across a bridge, follow the path across a bridge, go through a forest and cross two bridge (the second one is easy to spot) and go southwest to the town selling the best stuff.

Village: Piata

After you’re done with your purchases, walk to the far north of the city (from the entrance), to the end of the brick path. Walk west to here

Go south and west after crossing to small lakes and ruined houses to enter the middle tower you see.

Dungeon: Control Tower

From the stairs, take the first path to you left, go up when you can, then left and take the fourth staircase from the western wall (sixth from the right). Take the third staircase you encounter, follow the path, take the second staircase when you have the choice, take the next one right to you, follow the path and walk right to go up between two holes. Play Musik when facing the piano and go north (between more holes) to get a red, yellow, blue and green card; they all unlock the corresponding dams. Warp to Zema, exit the city and cross the tunnel. Walk south, east and across the bridge; keep walking south to your jet scooter. Navigate through the large canal to enter a dam. The other doesn’t really matter; the fight will happen after you unlock the fourth one.

Dungeon: Red Dam

Unlock the door, walk northwest to some stairs, follow the path and take the first staircase you see. Walk down to take stairs and get fire slasher, go back one floor and walk due west to stairs. Follow the path north to a wall, east to stairs, follow the path, go under a giant hole, east across a series of holes, south after them to get a fire staff and back east; avoid the hole to take the stairs. Walk south to take stairs, north to take sword of anger and follow the path west of the stairs against the southern wall. Go north when you can, take the stairs, follow the path to the first staircase you can take, go west and put your red card in the card holder (similar to the ones in the control tower).

Exit the tower (just fall down the hole to your left and you’ll be right by the entrance), cast Ryuka and warp back to Kueri. Make your way to your scooter and enter the closest large canal (north of you) to your next dam.

Dungeon: Yellow Dam

Unlock the door with the yellow card (east of the entrance), go east ignoring the pair of stairs you see as far as you can; take the second staircase you see. Follow the path west; keep going west pass a staircase and take the next one you see. Take the crystanish, backtrack two floors, take the stairs right down, walk south to get escapipe and keep walking west. Go up a large corridor when you can to take stairs, walk west to more stairs, northwest to more stairs and south to more stairs. Follow the path north, go north opposite stairs you see below you, east to get amber robe and take the stairs you ignored to get crystal cape. Backtrack one floor, go east to take the stairs and get crystal chest, backtrack one floor and keep walking east. Ignore the stairs and go north, west in the second corridor you see, south when you can and follow the path to stairs. Unlock the dam with the yellow card and exit the dam.

Just navigate due west to enter the next dam.

Dungeon: Blue Dam

Open the door with the blue card and go south to some stairs. Go up to take antidote, backtrack, walk up to the wall and follow it west to eventually take stairs. Follow the eastern wall south to some stairs, follow the western wall south and walk west when there’s an opening above you to take more stairs.

Follow the path to eventually get storm gear, walk south to some stairs, walk east pa** h***s to get color scarf and jump in the hole right below the chest. Get snow crown, take the stairs south, walk west to more stairs, walk north, go west and when you can and go east when you reach ground pipes. Take the next two flights of stairs you see, get a wind scarf, backtrack one floor, walk west and up to take more stairs. Walk all the way up to take some stairs, walk south and go east when you see a hole (stay above it). Keep walking to some stairs, follow the path, go south and west below the hole to get trimate, follow the southern wall east to eventually take some stairs, follow the path and go south at intersection to some stairs. Take the stairs due south, get star mist, backtrack one floor and walk west to more stairs. Walk north, fall into the hole on its southeastern part and unlock the blue dam.

Escape the dam and warp back to Paseo to heal. Walk north, pass the tunnel leading to Oputa and you will see you jet scooter. Take it down the canal to the final dam.

Dungeon: Green Dam

Unlock the door, take the stairs and walk northwest to take more stairs (right around the pools). Walk west to stairs, take the truth sleeves and follow the path north to take the northern staircase. Walk west to stairs, walk east (south of the hole) all the way and take the first flight of stairs you see to your right. Walk east around the pool and south to get aegis, backtrack one floor, walk straight west (NOT next to the hole) and follow the path to take the first stairs you see. Follow the path north to get star mist, backtrack one floor, follow the path east of the pool to get great sleeves and backtrack to take the stairs you skipped earlier. Walk west to some stairs, follow the path to unlock the dam and be ready to fight.

Boss battle: Army Eye *3

Your job is to survive long enough before they capture you – you are not meant to win this fight.

Dungeon: Gaira

You can’t fight here, so escape any fight you may encounter. Walk north, east and south into a new room, east towards orange tiles, east as far as you can, south, west on orange tiles, east, northeast and east. Check the control panel for a dramatic scene.

Village: Paseo

Once you gain control, walk to the central library, go on the roof and take the spaceship to Dezolis.

4.                      Blast from the past

Dungeon: Skure

I wrote dungeon because Skure is a mine, even though it’s opened. Anyway, walk north, west and follow the path without deviating to some stairs. Go north, take 6400 mesetas and keep going north for more stairs. Follow the path, go east when you can, take gardaboots and keep walking east to exit the mine. Follow the path east (passing between trees) to enter a village.

Village: Zosa

You can’t do much since you can’t communicate with Dezolisans (but at least you will be able to teleport later). Exit the city, cast Ryuka and you will be back to your ship.

Dungeon: Skure

Take the same path to the first flight of stairs, go west to more stairs and go north until you see a chest with 15,000 mesetas. Walk back south, take the corridor going west to some stairs, directly south to more stairs and out of the mine. Walk south, east before the trees, north between impassable mountains and keep walking east to the next village.

Village: Ryuon

Once again, you can’t communicate with the locals. Warp back to Skure.

Dungeon: Skure

This time, walk all the way north and then west to some stairs. Walk north to get magic cap (Dezolisians lie but musk cats are polite; must be worn by the hero to be effective), go south to some stairs, walk north to get mogic cap (Dezolisians tell the truth but musk cats are aggressive), another magic cap and 5600 mesetas. Walk east, take the first corridor down to get laconia chest, go back up and follow the path east without deviating to some stairs. Follow the path, walk west of the stairs to get 8600 mesetas, walk back p and take the stairs west to exit the mine. Walk straight north between impassable mountains and go east when you see trees to enter the next village.

Village: Aukba

Save your adventure here (to facilitate warping back), power up as needed (especially in the armor shop) and exit the city. Walk west, go under the trees, go south under an impassable mountain range (towards a giant precipice) and enter it here

Dungeon: Crevice

Follow the path west without deviating, avoid the holes, follow the path north and go downstairs. Walk west, follow the path south, walk south when you can, keep walking east pass a flight of stairs going up and keep walking to take stairs going down. Follow the path (hug the wall to go pass a narrow passage), take the first flight of stairs you see, follow the path down, go west, south and out of the crevice. Follow the straightforward path to a mysterious shrine.

Village: Esper Mansion

Walk straight to go downstairs, talk with both Espers and watch a scene with Lutz – yes, the same that fought with Alis 1000 years ago. After you get the prism from the chest cast Ryuka, teleport back to Skure.

Dungeon: Skure

Walk north, west, south and west in the second corridor you see to take stairs. Take the stairs south, follow the path and go south when you can to get 18,000 mesetas. Keep walking west to take stairs, go north and take the stairs to exit Skure. Walk due south to the Crevice, keep walking south and deviate west under the first line of trees for a dungeon.

Dungeon: Naval

Walk north to enter the dungeon proper and walk north to go upstairs. Follow the long but straightforward path until you see a room above you with holes. Fall on the left side twice, walk north to fall on the left side again, walk down to get nei emel and fall to the right to be back on the first floor. Make your way to the top again, walk east to enter the room from a different angle and fall in the lower hole three times and get mir emel, laconia emel and great sleeves. Fall down the hole back on the first floor and walk down to go to the top from the south staircase. Jump in the hole to your right three times, get nei shield and jump down back to the first floor. Make your way to the top again (through the southern staircase), walk left and jump in the upper hole three times to get truth sleeves and trimate. Exit the dungeon, cast Ryuka, heal up as necessary, exit Aukba and walk west to the next dungeon.

Dungeon: Menobe

Walk north, east when you see a couple of statues, hug the wall, go south when you can, west and upstairs. Go east around the statues (hug the wall), walk west, north pass stairs going up and go downstairs instead. Take the nei crown, backtrack one floor, go back to the statues you went around of and take the stairs going up above you. Go upstairs, follow the “blue wall” west without deviating and take the second flight of stairs going down. Walk west through the wall (a glitch). Follow the blue wall to the east without deviating and enter a room to the left to go upstairs. Follow the path east and follow the blue wall to here (enter that passage)

Keep walking down to some stairs, take the nei helmet and exit the dungeon. Warp to Ryuon, exit the city and walk west until you can walk to the left of the impassable mountains. Start walking straight north, keep walking north close to the impassable mountains and go east after the second one for the next dungeon.

Dungeon: Guaron

Walk straight west after the first pair of statues. Keep walking to get laconinish and exit the dungeon. Walk back in, walk up straight, go west when there is a wall above you, north, west, south, west outside the wall and south here

Walk west, south when you can, east to a brick path just outside the wall; enter that room and keep walking east to go upstairs. Walk around the central hole for a couple of floors; walk west when you see statues and follow the long path around a chest to get it (a nei cape). Backtrack to the stairs and keep going up to the summit. Walk around the statues (left or right), get nei armor, exit the dungeon and warp to Zosa. Exit the city, walk around the impassable mountains on your left until they come to your right. Walk west to a narrow passage between impassable mountains and follow the path north to the last dungeon.

Dungeon: Ikuto

Walk straight north into a hole, south to fall in the middle hole, take the laconia dagger, fall into the hole above you, follow the path west to a pulse cannon and exit the dungeon. Go back in, jump in the hole to your left, jump in the one northeast, walk west in another hole, follow the path to the second hole you see, walk north to the next one, straight east and go south once you see a hole next to statues (don’t jump in it). Keep walking south – east of the “round” statues – to get nei slasher and warp out. Go back in, jump in the middle hole again (twice), walk west to a dead end with a hole, up into the next one, up and into the next one to your left and get nei shot. Cast exit the dungeon and make your way back to the Esper Mansion.

5.                      The end

Village: Esper Mansion

Talk with Lutz, get the nei sword and talk to him again (say yes) to enter the final dungeon. Use the sword to escape if need be.

Final Dungeon: Noah

The blaze is excellent to grind your level before the final fights. The purple blaze and the dragons are very strong but give you plenty of experience. Anyway, follow the path east, take the staircase due west, follow the path west, ignore the stairs you see and walk west to take those stairs. Walk straight north to go downstairs, follow the path west, go north, east and take the second flight of stairs going down. Walk due north to go upstairs, follow the path for a few floors, walk west and take the second flight of stairs you see, follow the path west (*2) and open the chest for a fight.

Boss battle: Dark Forces

This battle is hard even when manipulating luck with savestates. DF LOVES to use possession, which makes you lose control of your character until nei sword breaks the curse (you can’t control it). It always start from the back (so the character in fouth possession) to the front. Have Kain cast nagaj, the hero cast nathu (or megid if you love living dangerously), Rudo attack and Amy support with healing and defensive spells. Stay healthy and you will win.

After the fight, walk north, take the stairs you see east, go south and walk up the corridor to confront the Mother Brain (say yes and no).

Final Boss: Mother Brain

She is not as difficult as Dark Forces, but she is strong nonetheless. Her attack-all technic does tremendous damage, which will likely drain Amy’s technical points quickly. Use the same strategy as above – using nasak as a last resort – and enjoy a surprising ending (start walking down, then walk through where the Mother Brain was).

Use the same strategy as above – using nasak as a last resort – and enjoy a surprising ending (start walking down, then walk through where the Mother Brain was).

janus : Its been a while since I last saw you do a guide. Seeing this put a smile on my face to say that I need to finish mine as well. I hope to see you do more when you have the time too. I doubt I would play the second game of Phantasy Star, but I will try and play the first one again as said before.

The first one requires too much grinding for my taste. This one has a lot of mysteries and CAN be solved without a guide. But I'm sure you will profit a lot from it

To give you an idea: PS 1 was so difficult that even the SPEEDRUN (meant to be completed quickly) spent 10-20 percent of the run grinding levels. I find level grinding for strategy RPG more interesting
