There was an earthquake registering 8.8 on the Ricter scale in Chile, so far there are 122 dead. Also islands are being warned of tsunamis that may have been caused by this earthquake. This is the second major earthquake in three months, what do we do about it.

actually... it's the second major earthquake in a few days. There was a 7.3 near Japan just yesterday I think.

That's crazy though.... 8.8 is HUGE.

there seem to have been several really large earthquakes recently. The one in Haiti was the most devastating but 3 earthquakes over 7.0 seems really rare.

Yeah, I think that maybe this has something to do with the shifting of techtonic plates at a rapid rate...

It was an 8.8 while in Haiti there was an 7.0 but, in Haiti it happened IN the city, making it more deadly. In Chile it happened in the ocean, hardly causing problems, but in Chile, there is a Smaller population and they live near the ocean on an island, making it the equivilant to the one in Haiti.

Another factor explaining why the Haitian earthquake was worse than the Chilean one would be that Haiti is an island. When land is entirely surrounded by water, they experience *significantly* more severe shaking since the ground can act as a liquid would.

Geeogree, I agree that three huge earthquakes in such a small time is pretty rare, but they were all spread across the world. If we saw this kind of activity all concentrated in one place, then that would DEFINITELY be something to worry about!

I'm a little nervous about the fact that experts claim there is about a 70% chance that an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 (I think that's what it was?) will hit California. I live here!
