It was a rainy day today, and while I was walking to the medical center with my mother, me with my hooded vest and my mother under an umbrella (that nearly escaped her grasp due to some gusts of wind), this question just popped in my mind.

Personally, I've always favored hoods. It doesn't technically protect you, but I always get my jacket/vest/whatever when I enter a building, a vehicle or any kind of closed environment, so it effectively protects my body from the falling raindrops. I'm not used to umbrellas, not to mention I prefer not to wear anything I can't wear in my pockets, unless I'm carrying a bag like when attending exams, but even then I don't wear an umbrella with me.

Probably this mindset is because it doesn't rain very often around here. Just recently, we underwent a streak of +100 consecutive days without raining, the longest in our history. That's why I'm asking, because I'm sure there's people living in more rainy places than me and thus their mindset over these kind of days is probably a lot different.

What is your choice? Hood, umbrella, whatever can cover your head, like a newspaper, or simply feeling the rain on your skin?

I personally recommend a hood considering it gets the job done, while also not having to carry it because it is literally on your body and does the same thing as an umbrella.

I have always preferred hoods just because they are more convenient for me, since I always have a hard time finding where the umbrellas are at my house. But when the weather gets chilly, or when it rains, I grab my hoodie. If I can't find it, I just run for wherever I'm going in the rain, like to and from the car. I personally don't mind getting wet from the rain. But societal convention usually disagrees with me on this one. So I prefer the hoodie.

Well, it depends. If it's a hood on a rain jacket, then yes. If it's a hood on a sweatshirt or a regular fleece or jacket, then no. If you go out in the rain with a fleece or a regular jacket on, it gets soaked and you'll be cold (if it's cold outside). If you just are wearing a rain jacket, then the hood works wonders. That being said, I prefer wearing my rain jacket when it rains rather than taking an umbrella, as I hate having to walk the same speed as the rest of my family under such a small "roof".

I voted hood but honestly I rarely protect myself from the rain. Usually where I live I either get a tiny sprinkling of rain or a super heavy downpour. No hood or umbrella really protects you from a heavy downpour completely so usually I would just hide inside when that happens (if possible). I'm also not opposed to just getting wet when it rains. I actually quite enjoy it.

I love the rain, whether heavy or light, so I don't "protect" myself from it.  I love to take walks when it is raining, or if I am at work, I will just go out and stand in it for a while.  Water is the bringer of life and there is no need for me to be protected from it.  I know most people think that if they get wet, they will get sick.  I don't understand that concept at all

lordbelial669 : As other have said, you get cold from the falling rain, and if your body temperature is lowered, it's easier for any virus floating in the air to lay roots in your organism. It doesn't automatically make you sick, but it increases the chances. After all, fevers are just the body's reaction to any unwanted organism, so the contrary of a fever also means the contrary of dying for a virus.

RDay13 : I do have a rain jacket, and on those rare rainy days over here I'm the envy of my surroundings for the wonders you mention.

And yeah, while normal jackets get soaked, if you take them off when entering an enclosed area, it technically is hotter there, so it serves as a counter-measure. In the medical center I was this morning, I could even go in a short-sleeved shirt, while outside a long-sleeved shirt and my vest were having trouble to protect me from the cold at times.

geeogree : I actually hate that my hood puts my hair down, as I prefer to have it upwards, so sometimes I also choose to not wear it. I like my hair when it's soaked, and in aesthetic terms, you will always look better with a messy hair soaked by rain rather than a messy hair caused by your hood.

Hood. But I always seem to kind of regret not having an umbrella. Depending on how long I'm outside for, and how heavy it's raining, sometimes I'm not affected by the rain and at times my hair becomes really wet.

I, myself, prefer a hood rather than an umbrella. Umbrellas just get in the way, especially when you are ascending a patio's or porch's steps.

They are also inconvenient. You have to hold them in order for their protection from the rain to remain constant, whereas with a hood, your hands are free... Unless you attach the umbrella to the back of your shirt, which would just be
weird, plus it would be likely to fall off or blow away.

Furthermore, a hood isn't as risky to get you blown away by random gusts of wind (which you just exemplified).

Though a hood is not the best way to not get wet, it will protect your shirt and head in a more convenient manner, while not risking any collisions or unwanted flights.

My choice: hood.

I will always prefer an umbrella for multiple reasons.

First off, even though you are dry, you will still feel the rain because the hood will be wet, and I'd much rather feel the rain hitting me than just feel a constant wetness on me, and even though keeping your clothes dry is good, the types of stuff hoods are made out of absorb the water really well so the hoods will stay wet longer.

Plus, I'd much rather have to worry about a dripping umbrella that I can either carry or put into a shopping bag than worry about a jacket or sweater that I'm wearing that's drenched.

I always used my hood even when I was a kid. I used my hoodie, I just don't like the umbrella to me it makes it feel weird to have it and to use it and such. XD I mean it keeps you dry usually way better then a hoodie does but I just plain don't like umbrellas and rather go with my hoodie.

Hood.

Even living in the lightning capital of the country (Florida; Sunshine State my foot), I have a couple of water-resistant hoodies and a raincoat that I can wear whenever there's rain around here, which is more often the case than not the case.

I don't know, I just don't like wasting one of my hands holding an umbrella that can sometimes be rather unwieldy, especially when there's wind. But that's just me. Either that, or I'll just go out in the dri-fit clothing that I normally wear, since even when it gets drenched, it doesn't take that long to dry. Also, it's a very nice break from the constant heat wave that the entire state seems to be in (this winter was a weird exception where we actually experienced some days with below-freezing temperatures).

Hoods work just fine for me. I don't like having to lug an umbrella around. Also, I have a hoodie that is practically waterproof, to the point where the front pocket will hold water. That is protection enough from the rain for me.

In terms of preferences, I'll go with the hood, but I currently only have 'em on sweatshirts, and my dryer is not working. If my hoodie got soaked, then I am pretty sure it'll have an awful scent from the rain water no less than a day later. So I have no choice but to use a umbrella.

I would choose a hood over a umbrella anyday because umbrellas usually make a good conductor and I don't have to carry a umbrella around with me or close it shut whenever I enter a building.

I have yo go with umbrella, simply because I hate wearing a hood to protect against the rain. My gripe with hoods protecting against rain is that you still get wet if it's cloth, and it feels uncomfortable wearing a hood over my hair.

Umbrellas do drip off the sides, but if you get an oversized one it isn't so bad.

Oh that's very easy, I'd definitely choose to wear a hood over an umbrella. With an umbrella, you have to open it up, and then once you get out of the rain, you have to close it again. With a hood, all you have to do is put it over your head. To me, that question's a no brainer.
