Hello, all! First, I'd like to apologize for being inactive, contradictory to what I promised earlier. I can assure you, however, that my holiday has been plenty of fun so far and very eventful, and I have been occupying myself with that

Anyhow, I'm getting my wisdom tooth removed in around two hours, and I have some questions for you guys, preferably those who have gone through this before .

I have two impacted wisdom teeth, both of which need to be surgically removed. One of them is going be taken out today, and the other within the next few months.

I tend to turn to every source possible for answers when I'm freaking out and word it in this manner to appear calm (translation: I'm a wuss ).

If I'm presented with an option, which sedative or anesthesia should I choose? I'd like to pick the most effective one I can get (hopefully nullifying both pain and painless yet odd tingles and such). Falling asleep would be fantastic, honestly. I know myself; it's not unlikely I'll be giving the doctor hell with all my nervous procrastination, haha. I'm aware of the fact that it'll all be over before I know it, but I'm childish, so hush and answer me ! Anyway, I'd appreciate a short list of which options are best in terms of making me unable to feel anything in case I don't have much to select from.

Secondly, and most importantly to me, how much it going to hurt afterwards? I'm inquiring you guys because doctors (mine, at least) tend to sugarcoat things when children are listening, so I don't normally bother asking them questions like this. It's kind of annoying; I'm 14, not 4 - I can deal B). Haha, in all fairness, however, I myself would definitely have an uncomfortable time explaining something like this to a kid as well, so I'm not going to complain. Anyway, just lay it on me. Are we talking super intense pain here? Dull ache? Somewhere in between? I'd like to be prepared.

Lastly, I've been reading about this a lot during the past few hours, and I would love to hear everything you've all got to say about avoiding the "dry socket" complication. Apparently it's a huge pain in the butt. If I understand correctly, a dry socket is triggered by removing the blood clot that forms after surgery, right? Any tips on how to not do that? Because pretty much all I know right now is that I'm not supposed to use a straw, hahaha . What should I be eating and drinking afterwards? How long should I expect to be following post-op instructions once this is over?

If there's anything else you think I should know about, my friends, then please say so in your replies, and thanks a bunch in advance!

NintendoFanKimmy, out!~

EDIT: I'm back! There was only one thing to pick from, but it worked; I didn't feel a thing . The surgeon was super friendly and called me "princess" throughout the whole thing, and there was this TV in front of me playing some slideshow with funny pictures and stuff. I rinsed my mouth and spat as soon as I got home, but then I read the post-op instructions, which said not to spit. Hope that didn't cause anything too serious . Anyway, I'm fine, and I took antibiotics and a painkiller for when the anesthesia wears off. I'll be having yogurt and mashed potatoes for a while B). Feel free to answer any questions I asked about dry sockets!

NintendoFanKimmy : That sounds like you had a pretty good time getting your tooth yanked! I have only been put under laughing gas. I don't know if my wisdom teeth are getting pulled or not yet. But I am not as worried as you were. Enjoy the yogurt and mashed potatoes~

Yogurt and mashed potatoes...sounds good to me!  I guess I should have my wisdom teeth pulled so I can eat them more often  I jest.  I still haven't had mine pulled, and although I do tend to bite myself from time to time, they haven't been too much of a pain in the butt, er mouth.  It's interesting to hear stories of those who have had them pulled, though!  Thanks for sharing with us!

I was sedated when I got my tooth taken out. It was a nice feeling actually but you will feel a tug. I didn't feel a thing during and after the procedure. Also I barely got any food for the whole day when my tooth was being taken out.

I have had the luck to not have to go through this yet. Glad you did not feel any pain- that is a big relief for me to look forward to lol.
Mashed potatos and yogurt sounds good- I would probably end up buying a bottle of pizza sauce and indulge in it lol That's what I did when I got my braces in and could not eat for weeks. That was an awful pain. I think it is funny to watch people's reactions to anesthesia. lol. I wonder what my reaction will be like. Well, hope you get through it quickly!!

Ouch, I'm glad that it didn't hurt. I was one of the lucky people who never had to take them out, and since I'm oldish, I don't think I ever will have to have them removed. There had been a couple of times where I had pain, a lot of pain, and people said that's what it was but it usually went away after a day or two so I call myself lucky. Remember! Take care of your teeth!

Oh dear, the best of luck to you! When I had mine pulled out, the procedure in itself was OK since the anaesthetic was strong enough. However the following days were terrible since I could not chew towards the back of my mouth. However, do not forget that letting the said teeth would be worse for you. So be brave!

Also, I never saw two women paying so much attention to me before .

Good luck Kim. I don't have much to say on this. But I am sure you'll come out fine. But yanking it out is what you may be bargaining for. It will hurt a lot. So be prepared to be in a whole lot of pain...

I still haven't gotten mine removed, as much as I would like to say I don't care if they get taken out at this point, I sorta do. I'm glad that yours didn't hurt.

I got mine taken out actually about half a year ago. One had impacted, and the other three were growing in, so all four were surgically removed. Since I was 18, they didn't sugarcoat the pain a whole lot for me (they said flat-out that you would feel sharp pains often if you weren't on top of yourself with administering the pain meds), and I was lucky to have recovered very quickly from it; I was off the pain meds within two days post-surgery, minus one sharp pain about four days after. Even if you don't need the pain meds, though, you're still going to be sore for days.

I wasn't actually given a choice of anesthesia either, since I had to be conked out for the surgery with laughing gas and IV sedatives, unlike with my root canal (which I watched, disturbed, through a mirror) I had years prior thanks to a high-stick to the face in Physical Education while playing hockey. Did you get conked out, too, or just put under anesthesia?

I think the absolute best advice I can give you is to really watch what you eat. Listen to your doctor over what you can and can't eat, and try to not stray away from that if you have the choice. Soup or soft-solid food is a nice option. Heck, I know someone who had baby food through post-surgery. Whatever option works for you.

The best thing I can say about avoiding dry sockets is to try not to do anything that'll create or have a chance to create a vacuum suction in your mouth, which is why drinking from a straw is a problem.

Best of luck with recovery!

A user of this : I will enjoy the yogurt and mashed potatoes ! Also, what have you been put under laughing gas for?

jlove92 : Thanks, I did! There was some pressure, but no pain !

janus : Thanks for the reply; it all went well!

Eniitan : Haha, thanks for making sure I was prepared, big sis, but no worries - I felt no pain at all .

Good! I do hope you will not get any other mouth operations any time soon. I also had gums transplant (to cope with receding gums), and the recovery was much worse.

Just keep a pot near you so you can spit up the blood and saliva while you heal.  And don't be afraid to take the painkillers.  I had four teeth out at once and it was just a mess for a week.

Good luck!  In a week from now you'll be 100% again.

I have had teeth pulled and I opted for anesthesia,I do not want to wake up and find the doctor yanking on a tooth. Now I am a big guy,so they were a tad hesitant to knock me out. (You have to use more drugs to knock them out, plus you run the risk of not waking up.) But just follow their advice, stock up on Jell-O and other soft food and be sure to take your meds and have someone drive you. You will be fine.

I'm glad to hear that it went ok! It's not fun getting teeth removed that close to your jaw....trust me though you will appreciate it that you've gotten them out when you were young.

I put off getting mine out until I was in my late 20's and it really caused me a HUGE load of pain. Something that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

I have never gotten my wisdom teeth removed before. Is it painful? Probably is, but I dunno. Tell me how the operation went. I remember this one time  when I had to get surgery on my teeth when I was young, and I got to eat ice cream for breakfast lunch and dinner. It was awesome.

NintendoFanKimmy : So how are you feeling? Are you able to eat solid foods yet? Or are you still on the Milkshake/smoothie/pudding diet?

Have you been playing lots of video games to pass the time? If so, which ones?

Oldschool777: I've been snacking on pudding and mashed potatoes for the past while - it's been great, haha! Also, we walked home, and even if driving was an option, there's no way I'd have been doing it! I'm only 14 !

LunarDarkness2 : I didn't feel a thing ! Honestly, getting the stitches out later on actually hurt more than the operation itself . I only felt pressure, but there was no pain at all. Even after the anesthesia wore off I only took pain killers for, like, two days at most !

EDIT: I've notified Oldschool about the summon fail!~
