So I took Calc 1 here in college a first time because maybe a year or so ago, I wanted to be an Accounting major. I failed after my first try of Calc . I took it again just this past semester to see if I can replace my first failing grade and was just informed of another failure.

I did what I was supposed to this semester with Calc and did just SLIGHTLY better this time, but still not enough to pass. Failed in the 40's the first time & this time, I was just a single digit number points away from passing.

Did what I was supposed to = made sure I had a better professor this time & went to tutoring when I realized I needed it (wasn't much help unfortunately, but I couldn't do much else)

And NO, I do NOT want to be an Accounting major any more
& now I KNOW for a FACT that math isn't my thing!!!

I'm worried that I'll have to go in and appeal because I was on probation this past semester for failing Calc the first time & D'ing my intro Accounting class (didn't like it).

What can be done at this point?

& no there's nothing I can do about a D
I was told so about 10x during my Project Success (Probation) Meetings

If I can assume you are currently in a four year school, perhaps your school would be open to you taking a semester or two at the local community college.  I got my associates degree before transferring in to a four year school, and I wouldn't ever want to go back and do it another way. It gave me a great opportunity to try out different classes, and they were generally much more approachable about getting help with my school work. They also were great with helping their students change course when they needed to without messing up their grades.

If you don't have an idea of a major yet, I think it's a waste of time to be in any four year program. Take your time in a more friendly, local environment to find out the right path for you.

Plus, my tuition was 400 dollars cheaper per credit, so I can't complain about that.

If you do go down that route, my biggest advice would be to set up some appointments to see what credits will transfer over.  I managed to get 100% of mine transferred, but I've heard about a lot of people having trouble with their four year schools accepting credits.

What do you mean, exactly, by asking what can be done at this point?  Why would you appeal the grade?  Was something done unfairly?

Calculus can be a tough class, but it's even worse if you have no interest in it.  If you don't want to go into accounting, do you have any idea what to do next as far as changing your major?  If you're not sure, try talking to other students and/or career counselors.  If possible, do some job shadowing. If anything will clue you in on a career path, being on the 'inside' is it!  I totally missed out on being a student teacher, so my first year of teaching was a steep learning curve. With 7 years in the education field, I can't say I'm as impressed as I once was.  If I had had the chance to witness the politics of education first hand (before jumping into the career), I don't know where I would be today.

Dfsg : Well, I think I want to be a Women's Gender Studies major, but I'm undeclared as of now since I'm only a sophomore and my counselor said that people don't usually declare until about September of their junior year.

Singelli : Oh I'm sorry. By "appeal", I meant that at my school, if a student doesn't get at least an overall & cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0 even after a semester of academic probation, they will have to go in and appeal a dismissal from the school itself, NOT just one grade. Apologies for not making that clear.

Oh no! Not calc! that was one of my favorite classes of all time lol. So sorry to hear your troubles, wish I had seen a post from you on this matter earlier. I'd like to think Singelli or I could've helped you understand it.

As for the probation, I know your situation all too well. I actually received two C- grades my first semester in college--one in Calc2 and the other in Chem1. The probation policy some schools have is just ridiculous! Completely merciless to those in their first few semesters. The idea is to not fall below a 2.0 for ALL your classes on an average, but having such a policy with only a handful of classes under your belt allows for no leeway your first couple years. Failing one class should not be the end of your academic career, even if you fail both attempts. I can see where they would kick you out of the major, but the university itself shouldn't double count that failure for your overall probation status, it's just not fair. I've had more than my fair share of petitions and I wish you luck! If they allow a written statement I'd advise you to lay out a plan of success for them to read for future classes. The school wants to hear that you've acknowledged what went wrong in the past and that you won't be making the same mistakes again.

danielbelitch : Yea I know! I wish that probation rule was only for juniors and seniors who've already completed more classes and credits....and I'm going to go to a counselor when the semester starts again, but for now, I say no more math classes, unless it HAS to be Statistics, which I hear is easier than calc

All I can say is don't give up! Calculus is a pain for me too. However, last time I took it I nearly got A+. What helped me is that the class showed concrete examples of its applications in real-life situations (economics in my case). Maybe you want to look at such examples to help you understand, online or elsewhere.

xxeliza321xx : I think if you really want to pass this subject, I think you should try as best as you can in this subject and if you failed twice and the 2nd time was better than the first, you can always try again. There is a saying, 3rd time is the charm.

I honestly think I'll leave it alone.
Today I got my final grade for the semester
and was also informed of my GPA, which is now above 2.0
so I'm off of probation now
and I won't have to go in and appeal dismissal

Well that's great! I'm glad things worked out for you! At least you didn't have to wait that long for that corrected grade.    Have  you decided what you will be changing your major to yet?

Its cool that you were able to get a high enough grade to not get yourself into bigger trouble. What's going to happen with the class? Do you still have to take it yet again?

What can you do with such a degree, out of curiosity?  Career-wise, I mean?

Ok, I'm glad that you don't have to go through all of the struggle again, hope you don't find another class that's just as hard.
