I've been hiding this quite a while, but I honestly think it's about time that I let it out.

I am personally SICK and TIRED of people complaining about Zero Suit Samus's appearance in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U.

"Her breasts are bigger than her head! I can't believe how sexist this is!"

^
 How is that even sexist?

Women have breasts. It's a fact. Deal with it.

Sorry for being inappropriate, but I am extremely frustrated at the moment, and moderators who feel they need to edit the last part out may do so.

I don't understand why people are making such a big deal out of this! They're complaining that Nintendo has over-sexualized Samus in the latest Super Smash Bros. games, and it's driving me nuts!

I agree; Samus is is pretty "visually appealing" in these games (and also in many others), yet I don't see the problem with it at all. What is wrong with it?

I do know that too many video games these days have over-sexualized females, and I am, in fact, longing to see a break in the pattern and hopefully be able to play as more and more "regular" female characters, yet Samus has been around for quite a while, and even now, in 3D, I believe that she is a SUPREME boss.

The thing is, people, some girls in real life actually do look like Samus. Some girls are just sexy. Oops. It's not like they "asked" for it or anything.

The hatred a lot of fans are expressing because of Samus being "sexy" are HORRIBLE and extremely offensive.

They make it seem as though people with large breasts and nice curves or whatever can't and/or are not supposed to fight or be bada** or any of that awesome stuff that Samus just is.

Samus is a boss. She just is. Samus is sexy. She just is. It's not like she can help it or anything!

OK, I know I'm talking about a video game character whose attributes are left up to her real-life creators, but I think you guys understand the point I'm trying to make.

Why is it so hard for the haters to accept that she, along with everyone else, can be both an attractive and amazing fighter at the same time? Why are they expressing such disgust at something that just isn't that important?

The complaints that many of these people are posting are just discriminatory, and they make it seem as though "curvy" women are not allowed to be anything more than bodies.

It makes me want to THROW UP.

With or without the suit on, Samus is and always will be, in my opinion, a tough, beautiful and overall fantastic video game character, and I do not want anything about her to change because she is just perfect.

Everyone is beautiful and has the right to be whatever they want to be.

NintendoFanKimmy, out!~

Sadly, idiots are idiots.
People either complain about Samus' heals, or her overall design. What people need to understand is; unlike Peach or Zelda, or now Rosalina, Samus can't exactly wear a big dress, she's trapped in that power suit for goodness knows how long. Probably days on end, traveling planets killing parasites is long, hard work. That's just my logic for her basic skin tight suit anyway.

People complain because she's good looking. And, well, okay she is. But that's how the designers wanted her to look. Her personality in the games hasn't been how people think. She's more of a scarred lost orphan. Think The Doctor, if instead of saving London, she kills space bugs.

The funny thing is, Sakurai said that Samus had a female designer. So don't go around thinking some pervert designed her for Smash 4. It was a girl trying to make a space bounty hunter in the way she always did, albeit in HD this time. Also, on the subject of revealing costumes. People whine and moan and are just salty over Samus. But Shulk's (I'M REALLY FEELING IT) swimsuit armor costume? That's A-OK! Because of....Well, they're just hypocritical that's why.

Judging people just because of their appearance is sad, and not the right way to judge someone. It becomes even more sad when you're flipping out over a FICTIONAL character's appearance.

I agree with you on the point that it's ridiculous people are complaining about Samus' Zerosuit design, I mean, it's not like you can wear anything bulky in a full on body suit. In the first few Metroid games you couldn't even tell Samus was female from her suit design, I just thought it was thick chest armour or something, but the moment she takes off her suit and reveals a skin-tight body suit people go nuts? What is that? Chances are if your performing acrobatics to the extent Samus is your going to be light in terms of body weight, and that usually means you have some curves. But if an artist decides an athletic female character wears a skin-tight suit under an armour suit and she takes that armour off... Watch out.

I've seen much more sexualized characters of both sexes in video games. Examples? For a female I would go with Miss Fortune from League of Legends. Her character model is borderline soft pronz, but I certainly don't see poeple getting outraged over this. Why would they? For a male I would go with one of the most famous bosses in the fighting genre. Shao Kahn. The tall, ripped, shirtless, big baddy from Mortal Kombat. I have yet to see one comment on how his model over sexuliazes the male image.

People are hypocrites, so I'll end my post with this meme.

Most people here are getting into much deeper stuff like discrimination, sexism and hypocrisy, so perhaps my post has no place here, because my opinion on this is a lot simpler.

Simply put, it's something like "Dude, it's a video game character. Get a life." That may seem kind of harsh, but really, have they nothing else to do, besides judge fictional characters, especially ones they didn't even create? Is there nothing more important for them to focus on?

Chindogu :

I wouldn't call that hypocrisy.

Those are different groups of fans, and different groups of people. Nintendo may have gone out there a little bit, but it is a generally family friendly cooperation. That's one of the given reasons it's popular, which brings us to why people are complaining in the first place about Samus's look, from what I gather.

Well, I don't know so much about the whole sexism aspect of it, I mean I can see why people could consider her "over sexual" but I mean honestly I don't care too much either way, I've been maining with her in Brawl lately and she can rip people to shreds while crossing them up, or how about her 75% damage combos that often lead to KOs? All while looking good? Better believe I'll be playing her, I mean it's not my primary focus, but her appearance is definitely a bonus.

But I mean honestly any character can pull off that sort of feeling of total "Epicness", take Ganondorf the king of evil, if you play him right he has some devastatingly strong combos all while bearing his general evil smirk, I mean people can complain all they want about Samus, but as other people have pointed out, she isn't the only example in this game.

NintendoFanKimmy : Ha ha, I notice this stuff all the time. XD The worst part (at least to me) is the fact that they complain about Samus so much, and then other games that out right show naked woman are written off, just because they have a "mature" rating. Guess what, guys? EVERYONE plays mature rated games anymore. Call of Duty, eight year olds are playing that. Mortal Kombat. Kids play that, too. It's no surprise, unless you've been living under a rock since 1950. And, this is VERY common! If I may go back to Mortal Kombat. Everyone complains about "Holy crud, it's so violent, my kids will see it, blah, blah blah blah blah!!!" And then when a game like God of War comes out, "Oh, this seems like a nice game." I can't stand it!!! Oh, and it's not just video games. The real world does it, too. That's a rant for another time, but, I still get so angry about it. I as a person can't stand hypocrisy or double standards, so this kind of stuff really burns me up. For some people, what you call "visual appeal" is very, well, appealing, and yet this kind of stuff happens. Honestly, when I was little, I chose who to play as in video games due to their appearance. If I had played this game, who do you think I would have chosen? And before you call sexism, just remember that your whole rant was about sexism. -.- Anyway, that's probably why Nintendo made Samus the way they did, so more people would play as her, which would in turn make the Metroid franchise more popular. It's all by design, and, with people like me, it works.

I never understand the issue with having sexy video game character. Even in the old games Samus was sexy,  considering she wears a bikini if you beat the game fast enough. People also complain about Bayonetta since she gets almost naked and does sexy poses, but I focus on the fact of how much of a badass she is. Also Bayonetta was designed by a woman, Mari Shimazaki, who designed Bayonetta, Ivy's alternate in SCV, the rabbit football and SC woman costumes in SC: Lost Swords, and who knows maybe Rao from Okami.

Go figure fans of a system finding a game they don't like or something in it bothers them to the point they have to speak out. Throughout the history of gaming this has been a constant and you always have people that are going to be on the opposite side of that opinion. I personally could care less unless it is something that would be offensive to a very young kid ... in which case then yeah you got a reason to complain. At the same time it is the parents job to deal with it and shouldn't have gotten the game for the kid in the first place without researching what they were getting. Now that being said I have to agree SwordLegion about Nintendo for example being a generally family friendly game system and the reactions parents could have to that ( especially considering the time period and societies views and morals of that time ). I also personally could care less most of the time because I am more concerned about game play and story. For the haters out there I would just say get a life and just enjoy the game or go play something else. Viva La Samus !!

For the haters out there I would just say get a life and just enjoy the game or go play something else. Viva La Samus !!

I don't get it, some people just like to make fun of everything that seems irregular to them (even when it's not). So far this is the first time of heard of anyone complaining about Samus. The closest thing to this that I've heard would be someone complaining about Shulk not deserving his abs.

People like to get mad at stuff, especially sexism-related stuff. Making video game characters attractive sells more, so why wouldn't they make them attractive? If they made her average looking or ugly, it's not going to sell as much, and nobody wants to play as an ugly character. People get much to defensive about this stuff. Samus looks just fine.

First let me start off by saying I love seeing that someone made this thread. And while I haven't gotten to read all of the replies yet (I have to go soon) I look forward to seeing what everyone has to say here. This is definitely a good discussion and something the gamer community needs to think about.

Now for my two cents: initially I was a little disappointed that they made Samus so busty and felt that her suit was meant to show off her body so well (I was actually embarrassed when she popped up on my computer screen and my parents were in the room ).
Then later I began to think about character designs. You see, as I recently began working in making games myself, I couldn't resist the urge to model some characters after my friends.

And then it happened...

I came to one of my best friends, and I realized she was --as you put it-- "sexy" (though I wish to also say a woman can be sexy regardless of her breast size. I understand what you mean, and felt it a good choice of words nonetheless). Immediately I felt ashamed. Female video game characters have always been portrayed as being, shall we say, overly-endowed, and this is something that annoys me to no end. I had actually decided to make the female characters in my games look more like the average real woman both to discourage the idea of over-sexualization of women in games, and to show people that women didn't have to be busty in order to be beautiful. But the idea of making a character look like this friend went completely in line with the typical VG female character. What would people think??

All this brought me to a realization that we need to accept every body is different, and some women do look this way, and that's fine.

In short, I now feel that there is nothing wrong with a game character looking this way, but that we do need more female characters that don't look like that. We need a balance, not the complete removal of either design. So while I do think they were trying to sexualize Samus' in this game, they didn't take things so far that they deserve any flak for it. People are too sensitive these days. So she's meant to be "sexy". Big deal. Will we next be saying women should be removed from games entirely since someone might think they're pretty? There's nothing bad in this design imo.

I have to agree people always find something to complain about even if its a very minor thing. This has been a thing in gaming for a very long time so why is it such a big deal all of a sudden? I could care less about this stuff personally. Its just a video game character it isn't meant to be taken that seriously.

The people that say it's sexist fall into two categories (or both):

A) Moms Against Boobs - Old people that think they oversexualize female video game characters.
B) People that are strongly attracted to Zero Suit Samus - They pretend to not like so-called "sexism," but in reality they're the type of people that stare at Samus' breasts frequently.

People think they are oversexualizing Zero Suit Samus for what reason? Her boobs? You can easily tell these people are computer nerds who haven't been outside and seen boobs in real life. They think boobs are a crime. I'm not really bugged about all these people complaining; In fact, I find it pretty funny. People just want to make up excuses to try to sound smart and against things.

Thank goodness this thread was made. I am tired of all the hate that comes from this thing. It's funny to see how nobody talks about how Shulk's nearly naked suit is sexist, but Samus gets beat on like crazy. And there's even another one that people could be ganging up against that isn't mentioned ever.

People talked a lot about the other designs that Zero Suit Samus has, but what the Wii Fit Trainer wears isn't even looked at. Both look like usual work out outfits, but again, only Samus is mentioned. And it isn't like these were just made up for Smash or anything! Those suits were even in the original Metroid. What she wears makes sense for her job. It isn't some completely impractical armor that are present in some games. There's over sexualization, and then there is somebody wearing practical clothes that make sense for the situation, and looking good in it. And that's not even mentioning that this is all just a fictional character in a virtual game.

And even after all that, why does anybody throw a fit? A game can have you murdering civilians, blowing up buildings, but some character in a game is wearing something that's "too sexy" and you go crazy then? The game's content is not hidden from you. With a quick google search, you can find out what is in the game. Heck, most of them tell you straight out on the back of the box, along with the rating system giving you a quick summary as well. If you don't like the content, don't buy it. It's the same thing as in a movie or book. Nobody's forcing you to get it.
