Yesterday, in the Dominican Republic, the number one prospect of the St Louis Cardinals was killed in a car crash along with his girlfriend. Tavares had made his debut last season after winning more than 2 dozen awards and honors in the Minor Leagues and was expected to be the next big thing in the Cardinals lineup.

He had just turned 22 years old halfway through the season and became one of the youngest American Pro athletes to die, with only 4 other American atheletes to die younger than him in the last 40 years.

It's always horrible to hear of someone dying. But, being one of the youngest athletes to die, that's just not a position I'd want to hold.

Taveres was also the number 2 overall ranked prospect in the mlb (when he qualified). Taveres hit a home run in in second ever major league at bat. He got a standing ovation and went out for a curtain call. Tavares hit a game tying home run 2 weeks ago in the playoffs for the cardinals. He went out for a curtain call. Unfortunately, the cardinals lost that series, and perhaps had they won, Tavares could have been alive. It is quite amazing how circumstances happen the way they do, but we cant go back in time and chang things so this is the reality we all must live with.

RIP Oscar Tavares. You will forever be a cardinal.

I heard about this when the news broke last night.

I absolutely detest the Cardinals, but this upsets me greatly.

Taveras was a true talent. A genuine diamond for all to behold, and death took him from us far far too early.

His absence will be felt.

Here's an upsetting thought, if the Cardinals beat the Giants in the NLCS, Taveras stays in the US. Taveras stays in the US, and he's less likely to die on that night.

legacyme3 :

Exactly what I said.

Maybe if the series ended one game later, or one game earlier, and circumstances could have been different and Tavares could be alive. Trippy.

bobq :

I typed it on phone, so your post "sort" of ninja'd mine lol.

It's just weird to think that Taveras is dead. Not to make light of the situation, but normally, when an athlete dies during their career, they are inconsequential, or a small talent.

This might be the most major sports related death for an active athlete in forever.

I saw this on Twitter last night. I was checking the trends, something I rarely do since most of them are stupid things that are supposed to be funny but aren't, and I saw that the top trend was "RIP Oscar Taveras". I thought it had to be a joke. I was shocked when I read up on it and found out it was true. It's such a shame. He had so much talent and he died so young.

legacyme3 : Usually, when I hear of an athlete dying, it's because of something stupid that they did, drugs, DUI, weapons. Not only was he a very major player, but just the fact that he really had nothing to do with it makes it even more terrible.

As a Christian praying for his family, friends and the Cardinals nation. As well as anybody else going through something

I watched him play this year when he made his debut for the Cardinals. He had a lot of potential. He was expected to be the Cardinals right fielder for next year. He had the potential to be a 20 home run guy and big run producer . So sad his life and baseball career  was cut short. From what I have read he seemed like a cool guy in the clubhouse

I heard about this after logging into my email for the Fantasy League. It really is sad that he had to go so soon. He was so young, and he had a heck of a rookie year.
Don't be surprised if the MLB does something on Opening Day for him next year.
