   So here's the run down..
In the game you are playing as a man by the name of Daniel. You wake up in the Prussian Brennenburg Castle remembering little to no memory. You wander the halls until you come across a note that 'former Daniel' has written to himself, stating that he had drank a potion to make him lose his memory in order for him to move on and kill the Baron, Alexander.
As you explore through the castle Daniel starts to remember bits and pieces of his past and also more notes written by himself and even others whom used to be within the castle. Throughout your findings, you are always being followed by a dark presence which Daniel has been running from for quite some time.
Before Daniel had traveled to Brennenburg, he had been an archaeologist and was on an expedition in Africa where he had found the broken pieces of a mysterious orb. After bringing them back to England and reassembling them, he tried to research further into it, but he was plagued by terrible nightmares and whomever crossed his path or that of the orb had perished because of the dark presence which is deemed as the "Shadow".
Daniel had received a strange letter from Alexander stating that he could protect Daniel if he came to stay with him in Brennenburg. Daniel was greeted by Alexander and all his servants warmly, but he was unaware of what had followed him. Alexander knew about the beast that was following Daniel, and promised to rid of it for good.
Alexander taught Daniel all he could about the orb, but Daniel wasn't too interested in it anymore, and had wanted to just rid of it. Alexander advised against this, and told Daniel that with the orb, he still had a fighting chance against this "Shadow".
Alexander showed Daniel all around his castle, and in their visit to The Inner Sanctum, Alexander tampered with the Orb, further enraging the Guardian. After covering the Orb, the Shadow disappears and he informs Daniel they have little time to banish the Shadow and that they must perform the Warding Ritual before it's too late.
But, Alexander was a fraud and hadn't truly wished to help Daniel. Truly, Alexander was a being from another world whom had spent centuries within the castle trying to open a gate back to his world. In order to do so, he needed "vitae" which is a substance you can only harvest from the blood of agonized humans and he also needed an Orb(this is where Daniel comes into the big picture).
Alexander had really invited Daniel to his castle so he could be his personal torturer, replacing his servants in which he uses to make his monsters(Brutes and Grunts) that Daniel is running from throughout the game as well. Alexander claimed that the "vitae" will fuel the ritual so that the Shadow will be banished forever. Daniel embraces the role, more-so when Alexander makes him believe that these humans he has captured are criminals. In order to produce enough of this vitae, the two of them feed all of the prisoners an Amnesia potion in order for them to forget all of the torturous methods they had used on them. As the experiments continue, Daniel loses faith in Alexander and is shaken by everything that has happened.
Realizing what is happening to Daniel, Alexander flees, stealing the Orb and sealing himself within the Inner Sanctum. Furious with what Alexander has done, Daniel then decides to drink the Amnesia Potion himself. And that is where the game starts out.
So, while exploring through this castle as Daniel, there's certain things you must watch out for such as his health and sanity. Health is pretty much only taken if there are brutes/grunts after you and they manage to hit you. In order to keep your sanity up, you must stay in lit areas. If his sanity is low, he is more vulnerable to monsters. Although a way to rise sanity as well is by progressing in the game and solving puzzles.
Brutes/Grunts in the game are wandering around the castle in order to stop Daniel. These monsters will chase after you until you are out of their site and hide. Daniel isn't given any sort of weapons, therefore you cannot attack these monsters.
Now personally I love this game. The graphics are great and the music just fits the whole story. I will admit that it definitely scared the living day lights out of me, though, lol! As soon as I had progressed unto the water monsters(which are invisible) I was so scared and on edge that I had completely stopped playing the game for a few weeks before regaining the nerve to go on. Definitely the most frightful game that I have played yet!
So, what about you guys? Has anyone ever played Amnesia? If so, how was the experience for you? If not, would you like to play it in the future?
