The Lost Vikings - SNES Review (This is my first review, bear with me here) I came across this game by browsing the plat forming section here in RGR and am glad I did! The Lost Vikings has a simple concept of general plat forming, but adds puzzle game aspects in to the mix (great combination)! Making the game more unique and confusing at times then you might think actually. Graphics: 7
To start off, we'll talk about the graphics. The art style is pretty similar to most other SNES games but, the color palette seems a bit darker, similar to some Genesis games almost at times. As you progress the area around you does change which is nice but, they stay the same for a couple of levels sometimes. In some levels doing a certain action can cause the whole level to change to a whole different theme! In general the environments are usually really detailed and the same goes for the characters and enemies along the way. Not the best the system offers, but still nice to look at while playing. Sound: 6 On to our second category, sound! Similar to our last category, not the best music on the SNES but still nice to listen to in general. Most of the songs are repeated a lot over the course of the game, even if a new song does play, it re-uses most of the audio and instruments from the other tracks in the game. I understand sometimes lots of music in a game can take up lots of cartridge space but I know they could have had at least a couple extra tunes included. It could be better, but it’s still ok as is. Addictiveness: 7 If you didn’t know already, you can switch between 3 players in this game. Each with a different ability and features which allows for multiple paths to complete one level. This allows player to come back, and play the game a second time using characters and the items available in different ways then the first time. This offers a pretty high level of addictiveness and I know I would play the game more than once! But, how addictive it is to you really depends on if you like puzzle games or not, I even got stumped on some puzzles at times and wanted to quit! Story: 4 (I’ll only explain how the game starts, spoiler free!) The story is a tad cliché and mediocre in general, not like a plat former really needs a really good story anyway. Basically, three Vikings go out to hunt for food for the families they support (this is where the three Vikings abilities are taught to the player). Upon sleeping that night, a space ship of some sort takes the Vikings away from their homes. The three are left to fend for themselves on the ship and escape. I won’t go any further into detail past that, if you really want to hear the rest of the story, you’d probably enjoy the game! Depth: 7 As explained earlier, using the three Vikings in different ways can take the player through different paths and ways to beat the game. This offers the ability to play the game two times, maybe even three times without getting bored! There are a ton of levels to go through and even a two player mode is available! A password system is available as well, or you can use the save states here in RGR. Also, if you found a level you really like, the passwords are here on the cheat part of RGR so you can go to it whenever you like. This is definitely a game you’ll want play more than just once! Difficulty: 5 The game isn't hard but some puzzles later in the game might stump you a bit. The plat forming part and fighting enemies isn't really that hard and it’s only the puzzles themselves that made me bring this section from a three to a five. One time I threw a piece fruit that I needed away but that was mostly my fault sense I hadn't learned the controls at that point in the game. Overall, not a really hard game, especially compared to other titles on the system. Overall: 8.5 This is a great SNES title to at least try once, even if you don’t like puzzle games or plat forming games at all! I've rarely heard anyone talk about this game and others should know and at least give it a go! Thanks for reading! -awsome888
