Well, hey guys, so today, I was just browsing through the RGR once again looking for anything cool and interesting I can review, Well, this game somewhat got my attention since I saw no other sprite hack like this one, Well, thats what I thought at first, then, I decided to go ahead and try it out and ehh.... Guess I can just review this one. Let's get started. Intro: Mecha Sonic? Well, that is pretty much the first thing that went into my mind which somewhat got into my head and caught my attention. I remember fighting mecha Sonic as one of the bosses in Sonic 3 & knuckles (I think). It was a somewhat annoying boss but to be honest here, not as hard as the previous ones in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but now, what is Mecha Sonic doing here? And one thing to prevent confusion, this is NOT metal Sonic, Mecha Sonic is different. Anyways, in this Sonic 1 sprite hack, it simply Gameplay: 6 Ehhh... Eww... Too big really. Well, now let me explain, there are some flaws and issues here, Mecha Sonic is pretty big compared to the original Sonic the Hedgehog, which is somewhat a huge disadvantage in some cases. Now, let's see why, firstly, Mecha Sonic is somewhat slower and feels a bit more heavier then the original Sonic. Usually, that is not supposed to be such a big problem, but for this case, it is actually a significant problem. Not only it makes the gameplay less enjoyable and more annoying, but some zones and some parts in the zones can not be completed due to his large size. Like labyrinth zone needs some specific paths in each act to be completed with Mecha Sonic which is annoying and also, moving in some parts in labyrinth zone is tricky and challenging. Also, in green hill zone, when you are trying to go through the tunnel thingy (not sure what it's called), so you can roll through at fast speeds, Mecha Sonic doesn't really move as fast there. So, to basically sum it up, some areas in some zones can have issues for Mecha Sonic to go through or can be difficult. Also, one thing that I do like about this sonic 1 sprite hack is that Mecha Sonic can do a spin dash which is pretty useful for a somewhat slow character like him. Sadly enough, Mecha Sonic has no other special abilities, which is a real bummer since Mecha Sonic has lots of potential for some cool types of special moves but oh well. Thats about it for gameplay. Graphics: 6 Well, most of the things in this Sonic 1 sprite hack were quite unchanged from the original Sonic the Hedgehog 1, however, the few modified things in this Sonic 1 sprite hack actually turned out to be somewhat... dreadful in some ways. Let's start off with the changed things, so of course, the sonic sprites in game were Sound: 8 To be honest, that is pretty much unchanged (obviously as you can guess). It is exactly like the original Sonic the hedgehog 1, but hey, the purpose of Sonic 1 sprite hacks isn't for some huge graphics or sound changes, really, it's mostly just for a change in the main character of the game. Though, I usually like the original sound effects and original background music the best. It is the most pleasing, catchy, and fitting unlike other modified sound effects or modified background music. At least this didn't get messed up and it just stayed as the good old original. Thats about it for the sound. Addictiveness: 5 To be honest here, I don't think I would actually want to really go back and play this game. There are tons of better and even more interesting sonic hacks to try out there and this sonic 1 sprite hack really has no good changes. Well, that is based off what I have seen from this sonic 1 hack after I played it for a while. I don't really know what else to say. Story: 7 Ahh... I must really say here, interesting indeed. Not sure if there is supposed to be a story here but based off this sonic 1 hack, it is Mecha Sonic stopping Dr. Eggman's evil plans. Like, really, isn't that just very interesting alright? Just imagine Mecha Sonic doing the original Sonic's normal job. Somewhat interesting but still, too much of a simple and over used story, really. Depth: 6 If you try to come to actually think closely about it, it doesn't offer much but a few disadvantages in gameplay from the original Sonic the hedgehog 1. Also, some ugly and awkward sprites in graphics. Though, I kind of explained why already. And this sonic 1 sprite hack doesn't offer any other special features, other than the original level Difficulty: 8 It mostly depends on the zones, however, due to Mecha Sonic's slightly larger size, it's even more of a challenge. Some tight areas are hard to go through and you can bump into hazardous things more often. Usually, green hill zone is a piece of cake, labyrinth zone and scarp brain zone are very challenging (especially with Mecha Sonic), things can be annoying in springyard zone and marble zone due to Mecha Sonic's big size, but other than that, similar to the original in other ways. Thats about it for difficulty. OVERALL: 6.5 I'll say, it is decent for testing purposes and experiments, but not for an official real sonic 1 sprite hack to play. That is about it for my review.
